No. 7 Texas Falls to Rival Texas A&M in Five-Set Heartbreaker

The Texas Longhorns’ 79-match home conference win streak ended in a thrilling five-set loss to Texas A&M, marking their first SEC defeat.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns saw their nine-match winning streak snapped in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, falling to Texas A&M in a thrilling five-set match at Gregory Gymnasium.

The 27-25, 14-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-18 loss marked Texas’ first conference defeat of the season and ended their remarkable 79-match home conference win streak. It was also the Aggies’ first victory over the Longhorns since 2010.

Madisen Skinner led the charge for the Longhorns, tallying a season-high 22 kills while hitting .415. Reagan Rutherford added 13 kills and four blocks on a .375 clip, but despite their efforts, the Aggies outlasted Texas in a roller-coaster final set.

The Longhorns started strong, pulling off a dramatic 27-25 first set win, thanks in part to five blocks and three aces from Jenna Kahahawai. Texas A&M bounced back in dominant fashion, claiming the second set 25-14 to even the match. Texas responded with a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the third set, but A&M took control in the fourth, winning 25-21 and forcing a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set proved to be a nail-biter, with the teams trading runs in a back-and-forth battle. Texas had three match points but couldn’t close the deal, and the Aggies finished the match on a 3-0 run to pull off the upset.

While many will be quick to rant about the mistakes or blown opportunities—the coaching staff knows what went wrong. I just hope this loss serves as a wake-up call. This team has too much talent to let a setback like this derail their season. It’s tough to see the 79-match home conference win streak come to an end, especially at the hands of the Aggies. But hopefully, this will light a fire under them moving forward.

With the loss, Texas falls to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in SEC play. The Longhorns will look to regroup quickly as they host Missouri at Gregory Gym on November 1.

Social media reacts as Texas volleyball wins the national championship

Texas is back on top of the college volleyball world.

Nothing was going to stand in the way of Texas volleyball from the national championship on Saturday night. The inspired performance left no doubt about who was the best team in college volleyball.

The Longhorns swept the Lousiville Cardinals en route to the program’s third national title and first since 2012. Texas had fallen short in the finals in their previous three championship appearances. This time around Texas made sure it was different.

Texas faced adversity at the end of the third set after going down 24-22. They then rattled off four straight points to seal the deal and clinch the title.

National player of the year Logan Eggleston was sensational in this matchup. She recorded 19 kills to pace the Horns’ attack. Eggleston’s legendary college career ends with a national championship.

Texas getting back to the top of the college volleyball world sparked tons of excitement on social media. Here are some of Twitter’s best reactions to Texas’ national championship win.

Texas Volleyball: No. 2 Longhorns beat No. 15 Washington in five sets

No. 2 Texas is on to the Elite Eight after a reverse sweep of No. 15 Washington.

After losing in the national championship game a season ago, Texas volleyball has revenge on their minds. The Longhorns took down Sacred Heart and Rice in sweeps during the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.

That set up a Sweet 16 match up against No. 15 Washington.

The Huskies came out of the gates on fire. They took a commanding lead in the first set with an 11-0 run to go up 16-7. Washington would not look back and closed the first set 25-19.

Texas looked to have regrouped in the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead but Washington stormed back into it. A 6-1 run in the middle of the set helped Washington take set two. Jerritt Elliot’s squad had no answer for what Washington was doing early.

Just one set from elimination, Texas and Gregory gym woke up.

Set number three went back and forth before Texas grabbed all the momentum late, winning 25-22. The crowd erupted as Texas broke a 19-19 tie. Washington would not have another lead for the rest of the night.

Logan Eggleston and Skylar Fields found their rhythm for the Longhorns as Texas dominated set four 25-9.

Entering set five, the crowd was rocking and Texas hit their stride. A few Washington service errors gave Texas the lead early. Up 14-9, a Skylar Fields kill completed the reverse sweep, sending Texas to the Elite Eight.

Texas will look to clinch their spot in the Final Four against No. 10 Nebraska on Saturday night. It is a rematch of last season’s Elite Eight matchup where the Longhorns beat the Huskers in four sets.

Texas Volleyball: Longhorns clinch No. 2 national seed

Texas volleyball set for another run at a national championship.

Jerritt Elliott has turned Texas volleyball into a national powerhouse during his 20-plus years as the head coach.

The Longhorns have reached nine Final Four appearances and five national championship games since Elliott’s arrival. The Horns won the national championship in 2012.

The 2021 Longhorns have continued the dynasty. Texas is 24-1 and won their fifth straight Big 12 conference title this season.

On Sunday night, the NCAA announced Texas as the No. 2 national seed for the NCAA tournament.

If they can keep winning, Texas will have the luxury of not having to play outside of Gregory Gym until the Final Four. Texas will host Sacred Heart, Rice, and San Diego this weekend for the first two rounds of the tournament.

The bracket sets up a potential rematch of last season’s national championship in the Elite Eight between No. 2 Texas and No. 7 Kentucky.

Texas won 15 of 16 matches against teams who qualified for the 2021 NCAA tournament. The only loss was to No. 5 Baylor in Waco.

Texas Volleyball: Longhorns lose to Kentucky in the national championship

The Texas volleyball team lost to the Kentucky Wildcats in the 2020-21 national championship on Saturday.

The Texas volleyball team reached their eighth national championship in program history and were looking to win their fourth title.

On the other hand, it was Kentucky’s first appearance. It was an electric atmosphere on Saturday night when these two teams faced off against each other.

Despite Texas winning the first set, Kentucky went on to win the next three sets in a row to beat the Longhorns 3-1 in a best-of-five and claim the program’s first national championship.

After Texas won the first set, Kentucky took early control of the second, never losing the lead to tie the match at 1-1.

In sets three and four, both teams kept it close, with the leads shuffling back and forth. Kentucky was able to maintain the momentum as they inched their way to the 25 points needed.

Texas finishes the 2020-21 season 27-2 overall and Big 12 champions which included no losses in conference play.

The team had two first-team All-Americans in Brionne Butler and Logan Eggleston, as well as third-team All-American Jhenna Gabriel. All of these players will return for next season in an attempt to win their first championship since 2012.
