3 Offensive Keys to the game for the Oklahoma Sooners vs. TCU

As the Oklahoma Sooners get ready to play the TCU Horned Frogs, here are three keys for the offensive side of the ball.

On Saturday night, Oklahoma pushes forward and looks to take one step closer to an undefeated regular season. This week’s opponent will be the TCU Horned Frogs led by Gary Patterson. Patterson’s team is far from a heavyweight but they aren’t pushovers either. They come into the game with a record of 3-2 with losses to Texas and their big rival in SMU.

Defensively, they do not resemble the TCU defenses of the past. For years, TCU was a stingy, stingy defense that had impactful players at every level. While the talent isn’t bad, they lack the edge of TCU defenses from the past.

So, how does Oklahoma attack them when the Sooners have the ball? Let’s take a look at three offensive keys to put Oklahoma in a spot to come out victorious Saturday night.

Protect the Ball

Yes, it’s quite obvious. However, there is still uncertainty about who will be taking the snaps as starting quarterback. There has been no official word from Lincoln Riley about his decision but the point stands for either Spencer Rattler or Caleb Williams. Rattler was benched for his turnovers against Texas. A fumble on a scramble sealed his fate for that game and opened the door for Caleb Williams.

However, Williams has had some issues securing shotgun snaps. TCU quarterback Max Duggan is a veteran player and has the running and throwing ability to make Oklahoma pay if they give them extra possessions.

The Oklahoma Sooners are the more talented team. They can’t afford to let a team like TCU hand around by giving them good field position off of turnovers. Whoever the quarterback is the Saturday night has to protect the football.

Who’s on the move in the latest Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 6?

There wasn’t much movement with just three contests on the Big 12 slate this weekend, but two teams made impressions in their blowout wins.

It was a fascinating slate of Big 12 games that served as a measuring stick for the six teams that played on Saturday. There were just three games, leaving four teams idle for Week 6.

Oklahoma and Texas played one of the all-time classic Red River Showdowns in the 117 game history of the rivalry. TCU blew out Texas Tech under the lights in Lubbock, and Baylor dominated West Virginia in Waco.

The four teams on bye weeks made this week’s power rankings a bit more difficult, but what I landed on was a team on a bye couldn’t move up. For instance, Iowa State didn’t move past Texas this week, because they didn’t play and provide us any evidence that they’re a better team than the Longhorns.

Baylor on the other hand moved up one spot in the power rankings. As things stand, the Bears’ only loss on the season came to the No. 2 team in our Big 12 power rankings, Oklahoma State. Similarly, we’re not punishing Texas for its loss to our No. 1 team in the power rankings.

TCU gets a bump for winning on the road in Lubbock, which is a tough place to play at night.

Though we’re just a few games into the Big 12 schedule, a couple of things have become clear.

Kansas and West Virginia are the two worst teams in the conference. Neither can sustain consistent offense, and Kansas can’t stop anybody.

Texas Tech could join them if it doesn’t find an answer defensively.

Teams one through seven, however, will provide intrigue in Big 12 play this year. The conference looks to have a ton of depth in the top seven this week. It will be fascinating to see how they match up as the season goes along.

Final game grades, report card for Oklahoma-Texas Tech

After every game, Sooners Wire’s Kegan Reneau will rewatch and provide his final grades. Here are OU’s grades and report card for Texas Tech

As Lincoln Riley says, “The game is never as good as you thought, and it’s not going to be as bad.”

This one was as good as you thought. Oklahoma annihilated Texas Tech behind a big performance from the Sooners’ offense, Alex Grinch’s defensive line and a couple lucky bounces on turnovers. It wasn’t that the margin of victory was surprising, it was in the way Oklahoma dominated.

After every game, Sooners Wire’s Kegan Reneau will rewatch and provide his final thoughts before moving on to the next one.

Here are the grades for the unit and the grades for individuals who ended up on the stat sheet or were noticeable for Oklahoma. These grades reflect how the Sooners played in the game indicative of the perception Reneau expects them to play.

Oklahoma took care of business on the road in Lubbock, Texas.

The Sooners fell behind 7-0 on the first drive of the game, then the rout was on.

Oklahoma rattled off 42 unanswered points and scored 48 in the first half against Texas Tech. It was a complete performance from all three phases of the game as the Sooners would go on to beat the Red Raiders 62-28.

Spencer Rattler had a big day, going 21 for 30 for 288 passing yards and two touchdowns. It was his second-straight turnover free football game.

The return of Rhamondre Stevenson and Ronnie Perkins would be welcomed, too. Stevenson had three first-half rushing touchdowns and Perkins’ presence could be felt from the word ‘go’.

Here are the best stats from the Sooners’ big win on the road.

  • Texas Tech’s first drive went 75 yards for a touchdown. Texas Tech’s next 6 drives (first quarter and two drives in the second quarter) went for 18 yards with two interceptions, a turnover on downs and three punts. Oklahoma led 42-7.
  • Oklahoma earned its 40th win under head coach Lincoln Riley. At 40-8, Riley is one of just seven Sooners head coaches to reach 40 wins. Only Barry Switzer and Bud Wilkinson reached 40 victories at OU in fewer games (Bob Stoops also did it in 48 games).
  • The Sooners scored six rushing touchdowns for the first time since 2015, when they rushed for seven TDs vs. Texas Tech. Four different players scored a rushing TD tonight.
  • The last time OU scored at least 48 points in a half was in 2008 vs. Nebraska (49 in first half of a 62-28 victory).
  • OU has scored at least 28 points in a school-record 58 consecutive games. The next longest streak nationally since at least 1980 is 31 by UCF (2017-19). The next longest active streak is 19 games by Alabama (includes Saturday).
  • OU’s 48 points are its most ever in a half against Texas Tech. The Sooners have scored at least 38 points in each of their last 11 games against the Red Raiders. It is tied for the longest streak of 38 points or more against a single opponent in school history (also 11 straight games vs. Kingfisher College from 1908-19 [no game in 1918]).
  • Mikey Henderson cored his first career touchdown on a 4-yard rush in the third quarter.

The football Gods giveth and the football Gods taketh.

Oklahoma is welcoming back the long-awaited return of star defensive end Ronnie Perkins. The Sooners will get him back tonight, but will be down another starter.

LaRon Stokes has been a key starter for Oklahoma for much of the last two seasons. According to a report from Oklahoma radio analyst Gabe Ikard, Stokes is not dressed out during warmups.

He has made eight tackles on the year, which includes 2.5 tackles for loss.

Behind Stokes is junior college transfer Joshua Ellison. Starting defensive end Isaiah Thomas started at defensive tackle for the Missouri State game and nose tackle Kori Roberson can also slide out to play the position.

Oklahoma will also be without starting safety Delarrin Turner-Yell and starting wide receiver Charleston Rambo.

There has not been a reason from Oklahoma stated for the absence of the three Sooners.

Oklahoma and Texas Tech are slated to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT.

The Sooners (3-2) are looking to rattle off three-straight wins after dropping back-to-back regular season losses for the first time since 1999 to begin conference play. Oklahoma has won a historic quadruple overtime win over Texas and dominated TCU in back-to-back games.

Lincoln Riley and his 2020 team go on the road Saturday to take on a Texas Tech team coming off of a big win over West Virginia in Utah State transfer Henry Colombi’s first start. Oklahoma is a big favorite in this game, but Halloween and Lubbock, Texas, is a ‘scary’ sight for opponents.
