Steve Sarkisian’s first spring practice as the head coach at Texas will take place on Tuesday. A new sense of hope is coming out of Austin, much more than when Tom Herman was hired back in 2017. Sarkisian’s staff is night and day to begin his tenure.

Even with the hype, there will still be injuries to a couple of key players. In fact, seven will miss the entire spring: three on defense, two on offense and two on special teams. Middle linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is the most notable.

Here is the full list:

  • Punter Ryan Bujcevski (knee)
  • Linebacker Derrick Harris (knee)
  • Offensive lineman Derek Kerstetter (ankle)
  • Tight end Brayden Liebrock (shoulder)
  • Deep snapper Justin Mader (shoulder)
  • Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (shoulder)
  • Defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat (shoulder)

Both Kerstetter and Bujcevski’s injures stem from last season. The punter tore his ACL against West Virginia, while Kerstetter had to be carted off the field against Kansas State.

Sarkisian said in his press conference on Monday that both Overshown and Sweat will be back before the start of fall camp.

Not seeing Troy Omeire’s name on the list was encouraging. The freshman was supposed to be a breakout star last season before tearing his ACL. Sarkisian said the wide receiver will be limited throughout the spring.

Excitement is once again within the Longhorns program, with expectations rising now that Sarkisian is running the show. Practices will wiggle out position battles taking place, while incoming freshman can show their worth. Coaches will be able to evaluate players better compared to the normal offseason workouts that had been taking place.

Of course, there will be plenty of storylines to follow over the next month. Much of the focus will be on how Sarkisian’s offense looks, especially after the lackluster performances last season. However, the defense provides interesting questions as well.

Here are three storyline to watch for going into spring ball.

First, Casey Thompson vs Hudson Card

The first spring of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure is on the horizon.

Texas announced its full spring practice schedule on Wednesday and it will officially begin on March 23. There will be 14 practices prior to the annual spring game on April 24.

Workouts have been taking place with the new staff over the last few weeks, but no official practices have taken place. Most will take place on Tuesday and Thursday with a Friday and Saturday mixed in there.

Here is the full schedule:

The biggest storyline across the 14 practices and spring game will be the quarterback battle between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card. Both will have an equal opportunity to become the heir to Sam Ehlinger’s throne. Thompson is thought to be in the lead at the moment, but it will be tough to count out Card.

Outside the signal callers, how Pete Kwiatkowski aligns his defense will raise eyebrows. Will he keep the mold of Chris Ash’s scheme or move into what he had success with at Washington. DeMarvion Overshown and Alfred Collins are just a couple of defensive players with locked down starting roles and there will be a few positional battles.
