Looking at what the Texas roster lacks heading into portal reopening

Texas can’t afford to be picky in upgrading its roster weakness.

The Texas roster is one of the four or five best in college football. Yet if there is a fatal flaw, the team lacks at defensive tackle.

The above sentiment isn’t new to many who have followed the team. Albeit some have been of the belief that the team could make do with the roster on hand. Perhaps they can, but it’s not something Texas should take for granted heading into the portal reopening.

Presently, Vernon Broughton II is seen as a potential starter at nose tackle. Respectfully, it’s unclear Broughton should even be slated as the backup nose tackle. He’s been too small and has shown vulnerability in run defense. He’s a good player, but unless he has shown marked improvement in size, strength and technique he’s perhaps better suited at the off-ball defensive tackle.

Arizona transfer Tiaoalii Savea could be an answer at the position, but there’s still something to prove for the newcomer.

In addition to concerns over the nose tackle position, there’s a lack of proven depth on the interior. Not all of the defensive tackles on campus would be mowed over by SEC offensive lines, but the others might lack the playmaking ability or experience-acquired football intelligence it takes not to be the weak link in the defense.

Enter USC defensive tackle Bear Alexander who doesn’t lack size, playmaking ability or experience and Texas has one of perhaps many potential transfer upgrades on the interior should he enter the portal. The Longhorns don’t have to add Alexander, but they do need to add another impactful player to ensure a chance at a title run.

At seemingly every position but defensive tackle, tight end and receiver, although Texas could end up better at the latter two by volume of quality additions, this team figures to be better than its last iteration. The Longhorns need to have urgency to shore up their one position of need when the portal reopens.

Texas WR Isaiah Bond named a newcomer under most pressure

One writer thinks the pressure is on Isaiah Bond.

Isaiah Bond made a splash this offseason when he chose to transfer to Texas away from the Alabama Crimson Tide. The dynamic receiver is now expected to be the primary target in the Texas offense.

Bond’s new role in Austin makes one writer wonder if the pressure is on to produce for his new team. 247Sports’ Grant Hughes named Bond one of the 10 newcomers under the most pressure for the upcoming college football season. He elaborated on Bond’s inclusion on the list.

“Texas’ offense has to replace two potential Day 1 NFL Draft picks Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell, and is putting a lot of that responsibility on Bond. Like other programs on this list, its championship-or-bust for Texas after star quarterback Quinn Ewers opted to spurn the pros and return to Austin. He’ll have plenty of new toys to play with next season, and Bond is expected to be the de facto No. 1 target despite entering his junior season with less than 900 yards receiving in his career.”

Pressure is one way to look at what is presented to Bond. Now the receiver will be tasked with being the alpha of a brand new receiver room.

In contrast, the Alabama transfer now gets the opportunity to play in Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s offense. He should be afforded plenty of time to get open alongside a Longhorns offensive line that has excelled in pass protection the last two seasons. The line returns four starters.

In addition, Bond will catch passes from a third year veteran in starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. The two appear to be on the same page in spring practices.

The pressure might be there for Bond, but that’s nothing new since moving from Alabama. Texas will look to fully utilize the downfield passing threat in 2024.

Texas depth, OL noted as reasons for confidence in 2024 squad

Depth is standing out for Texas early on in the spring.

The Texas Longhorns have championship depth this spring. It is one of the more substantive characteristics of the 2024 squad.

Inside Texas’ Eric Nahlin discussed the team’s depth among several other strengths the Longhorns possess in his latest spring update.

The depth shows up most noticeably along the offensive line where Texas has too many starters than starting spots. That’s not the first time we’ve said that about a position group for the team this offseason.

The post-spring portal window could lead to attrition on the roster. The offensive line in particular boasts several players capable of taking a starting role. Even so, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has done well in retaining players the past two offseasons.

Texas might have experience and continuity in spades, but, save for defensive line and linebacker, the team’s depth could extend past the second string across the board. Through the first few spring practices, depth is one of the reasons Sarkisian and company are confident the Longhorns could be even better next season.

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian shares team motto for spring football

The Longhorns are cultivating an obsession for being their best in 2024.

We have a theme for the 2024 Texas football offseason. Head coach Steve Sarkisian is challenging his players to be obsessed with greatness.

Sarkisian shared the following to social media of the kind of obsession the team should have with being its very best.

“The obsessed inspire others to be obsessed. You can feel when someone loves what they do, when they live inside their craft. And, it pushes everyone around them to care about something that much.”

Sarkisian added another similar quote as the team kicks of spring football.

“It’s called a calling for a reason. When you find your obsession, you won’t be able to ignore it. Destiny doesn’t whisper. It screams.”

The quotes capture a new intensity that hasn’t been there in Austin for awhile. The Longhorns have wanted to win games in the past, but didn’t appear to want wins that badly.

The challenge ahead will require a high degree of obsession with getting better. It will require humility to ignore high praise. Outsiders could make the logical claim that Texas should accomplish all the things it did last season. But winning isn’t a given, and the Longhorns will need even more attention to detail to win 12 games again in 2024.

Steve Sarkisian wants his players to be obsessed with bringing their best effort this offseason. They will look to put up another strong product on the field next season.

Texas QB Quinn Ewers discusses his offseason mindset change

“I’m going into summer workouts with the best mindset I’ve ever had going into any offseason.”

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian knows his starting quarterback is Quinn Ewers, and “(feels) very good about that.”

That’s what we’re gathering from Sarkisian’s post-spring game comments. Ewers had a strong showing as he completed 16-for-23 passing attempts for 195 yards, including a dime to receiver Xavier Worthy on the most difficult throw of the day.

Ewers’ 2022 struggles have made him a new man and it’s manifested itself in improved work ethic. The redshirt sophomore dished on what has changed over this offseason.

I’m going into summer workouts with the best mindset I’ve ever had going into any offseason. … I didn’t like where I was at last year. And obviously something had to change.

That change has manifested itself in a new look Quinn Ewers, and not simply due to his shorn off mullet. Ewers has transformed his physique with a better diet and exercise routine.

“I’m eating a lot better,” Ewers said after the 2023 Orange and White game. “I’m doing all the small things a lot harder, and I’m excited.”

There’s still plenty of room for improvement, but there’s reason to believe the starting quarterback has turned a corner.

Texas Football: 12 takeaways from the Orange-White spring game

The offense put on a show unlike we’re used to seeing in the spring game.

The Texas Longhorns put their 2023 squad on display in Saturday’s Orange and White game. While we don’t want to make too much of the meaningless scrimmage, it looks like a handful of offensive players could be special.

The Texas offense went off in Saturday’s game. The most noticeable contribution came from the trio of Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and AD Mitchell. Heading into the scrimmage, it seemed apparent that the wide receiver room was the strength of the team. That’s a testament to the work head coach Steve Sarkisian has done in receiver recruiting.

When Sarkisian took over at Texas, the cupboard was bare at receiver and offensive linemen. Those positions have vastly transformed as we saw firsthand in Saturday’s exhibition.

Texas’ top two quarterbacks made a number of plays as the offense looked better than usual in spring games. Quinn Ewers looked to have improved at the quarterback position, while Maalik Murphy proved able to step in and win games at the quarterback position.

Let’s look at our takeaways from the spring game.

Texas LB’s Derrick Brown, Trevell Johnson enter transfer portal

Round two of the transfer portal is starting early for two Texas linebackers.

Round two of the transfer portal is starting early for two Texas linebackers. Derrick Brown and Trevell Johnson joined wide receiver Brenen Thompson as the most recent Longhorns looking for a change of scenery.

To be clear, all three individuals should contribute at their next stop. Each player will presumably play a pivotal role elsewhere. Albeit, perhaps the fit at Texas wasn’t there.

As for how it affects Texas, the team is now built to absorb roster losses despite the upside each player adds. Even so, the thin linebacker room is reason to anticipate head coach Steve Sarkisian could look to add experienced depth at the position.

The timing of the three transfer portal announcements makes one wonder if Sarkisian has began to tell players where they stand within the depth chart. Clearly, the Texas wide receiver room is reason for Thompson to explore options elsewhere. Nevertheless, one would figure Brown and Johnson could have an opportunity to push for playing time.

There could be more portal entries over the next week. We will continue to monitor how Texas players navigate the end of spring football.

“Prove it year” starts Saturday for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers

Quinn Ewers can inspire plenty of confidence with a good showing on Saturday.

One of the biggest events of the Texas football offseason will take place on Saturday.

The 2023 squad takes the field for its Orange and White game on April 15. The game is big for several players looking to earn starting jobs this season, but the eyes of the fanbase will be on Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Ewers had a roller coaster season last year. The highlights saw Ewers playing at a high level against Alabama and Oklahoma. The low points took place against Oklahoma State and TCU where the Texas passing game went absent without leave.

The Southlake product will look to show fans he’s taken the next step on Saturday. JD PicKell of On3 Sports discussed that topic ahead of the preseason exhibition.

You want to see him look comfortable. … Show me that you have had some more “aha moments” like Steve Sarkisian talked about when he went into the spring. He says it’s starting to make sense more and more for Quinn Ewers.

Inherent in the above sentiment is Ewers needs to improve not only in accuracy but in footwork and reading defenses. If we see him play more consistent football, Texas is set up for a conference title run. We’ll have a firmer grasp on his progression after Saturday’s performance.
