Shaq’s son Shaqir O’Neal enters the transfer portal

Shaqir O’Neal appeared in 20 games this season with one start at Texas Southern.

Another son of former LSU star and NBA Hall of Famer [autotag]Shaquille O’Neal[/autotag] has hit the transfer portal.

Shaq’s son [autotag]Shaqir O’Neal[/autotag], who previously played for Texas Southern, has opted to transfer. A 6-foot-8, 201-pound forward from Los Angeles, O’Neal was a redshirt sophomore for the Tigers this season.

He’s appeared in 20 games with one start in each of the last two seasons, and in 2023-24, he averaged 1.8 points and 1.8 rebounds.

A three-star recruit who attended Union Grove High School in McDonough, Georgia, O’Neal ranked as the No. 284 nationally in the 2021 class, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. His brother, Shareef, began his career at UCLA before transferring to LSU.

The elder O’Neal brother appeared in 24 games as a backup for the Tigers over two seasons. He went undrafted in 2022 and briefly spent time with the G League Ignite.

Shaqir is a largely unproven player, but coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] could take a flyer on a legacy.

Instant Analysis: LSU women’s basketball has no issues in drubbing against Texas Southern

The Tigers were without Angel Reese once again, but it didn’t matter in a 106-47 win over Texas Southern.

LSU has now won five games in a row after Monday night’s 106-47 beatdown against Texas Southern at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Despite missing star [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] once again, the Tigers offense played well, shooting 48% from the field. [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] led the way for the offense with 17 points each while [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] scored 16 and [autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] scored 14.

Aalyah Del Rosario also added 14 points coming off the bench.

It was an even more dominant defensive performance for the Tigers as Texas Southern turned the ball over 35 times, which resulted in nearly half of LSU’s points going the other way. Coach Kim Mulkey’s team also dominated the boards, outrebounding TSU 49-33.

LSU will now leave the country to take part in the Cayman Islands Classic. It will kick off its run in that tournament against Niagara on Friday afternoon.

How to watch the No. 7 LSU women’s basketball team host Texas Southern on Monday night

The Tigers may be without Angel Reese once again as they look to extend their winning streak to five.

Since losing the season-opener against a ranked opponent in Colorado, LSU’s No. 7-ranked women’s basketball team has reeled off four wins in a row, and it will look to make that five as it hosts Texas Southern at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

TSU (1-2) is still looking for its first win against a Division I opponent. It beat North American but suffered big losses against New Mexico and Old Dominion. Now, it faces its toughest test by far in the young season as it travels to play a top-10 team.

Texas Southern is led by first-year coach Vernette Skeete, and the Tigers are coming off a season in which they finished just 2-27.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch Monday night’s game in which LSU may be without star forward [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] once again after she missed Friday’s game against Southeastern Louisiana for undisclosed reasons.

Gators plummet in NET rankings after losing to Texas Southern

Florida debuted at No. 22 on the NCAA men’s basketball NET rankings, but a loss to Texas Southern has the Gators way down 24 hours later.

After being ranked No. 22 in the initial NET rankings Monday, a loss to the previously winless Texas Southern Tigers has Florida basketball down to No. 57.

The Gators were perfect in November, but December has been anything but kind to Mike White and company. Shaky shooting and early foul trouble proved to be too much to overcome for Florida against Oklahoma, but a repeat of the same issues (and then some) against 0-7 Texas Southern has Gator Nation slamming the panic button.

A Quadrant 4 loss can kill when it comes time for NCAA tournament selection and seeding, and the upcoming conference schedule isn’t looking like a walk in the park with the way this Gators team is playing.

White said that this “was not who this team is” after the loss, but the outcome undoes every bit of progress made in the first few weeks of the season. Even if Florida manages to dominate North Florida on Wednesday, the Gators don’t have a shot at a Quadrant 1 win until they host Alabama on Jan. 5.

Speaking of the Crimson Tide, ‘Bama sits at No. 14 but there are two more SEC teams ranked above it. Tennessee is just ahead at No. 12 and 8-0 LSU somewhat surprisingly has the No. 2 spot with just one Quadrant 1 win. Auburn is just behind Alabama at No. 15 and Kentucky is the next highest at No. 39.

Arkansas has the same record as LSU but is ranked No. 43 and Mississippi State squeaked into the Top 50 at No. 49. Texas A&M is the final SEC team ranked ahead of Florida at No. 56.

The good news is that Florida is far from the first team to be upset this year and there’s plenty of time to turn things around. The final rankings are the ones that matter, and now is the time to work out issues rather than during SEC play.

3 takeaways as Florida is embarrassed at home by Texas Southern

What just happened?

It was supposed to be easy.

The Gators had the chance to bounce back from their first loss of the season against Oklahoma with a buy-game against a Texas Southern Tigers team that entered at 0-7. Florida was listed as a 24-point favorite when the game tipped off, and it was undefeated in its previous 26 matchups against teams from the SWAC.

So much for that.

The Gators were stunned on their home court by the Tigers 69-54, dropping to 6-2 on the season with a Quadrant 4 loss now on the resume. The teams traded shots in the opening minutes, with Florida’s largest lead the whole night coming at 13-7. But UF’s shots stopped dropping, and TSU’s didn’t. It stretched a 10-point lead heading into the locker room, and Florida couldn’t cut into that lead at all in the second half.

The Gators were bad in basically all facets of the game, and there’s no way to look at this game as anything but puzzling in every way. Here are the takeaways from UF’s first-ever loss to a SWAC team.

Gators hoops takes on Texas Southern after dropping first game of the year

The loss to Oklahoma stung, but Florida should be able to get back on track against 0-7 Texas Southern at home.

Florida basketball is looking to bounce back on Monday against Texas Southern after losing its first game of the season against Oklahoma last week.

Poor shooting, especially from beyond the arc, proved to be the Gators’ downfall against the Sooners, but a winless Tigers team should be the perfect recovery game for Florida. Texas Southern only has two players averaging double figures in points, and it recently lost to No. 12 Brigham Young, 81-64.

Florida is ranked No. 14 as of publishing time but should drop a few spots once the polls are updated for Week 5. Regardless, it’s hard to believe that a close loss to a major program is any indication of an upcoming loss to a struggling team.

Mike White‘s squad has been relentless against lesser teams. They opened the season with a 13-point win over Elon and followed up that performance nine days later with an 81-45 win over Milwaukee. The victory over Cal in Ft. Myers came by 20 points and they outscored Troy by nearly 40 points.

The Gators will take every game seriously, but a projected starting lineup featuring Brandon McKissic may show that they aren’t too worried about Monday’s matchup. Phlandrous Fleming Jr. has been a key component of Florida’s success this year, and the team plays a whole lot better with him on the court (below). Allowing McKissic to up his numbers against a weak team might help restore confidence after the team’s first loss.

If Florida is going to return to the dominant form it displayed in November, the shots need to fall. The defense will keep the Gators in it long enough to find their groove on offense, but Oklahoma showed what happens if there’s no groove to be found.

Tip-off is at 6 p.m. EST on Monday at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville.

Game day betting odds for Florida basketball vs Texas Southern Tigers

Here is a look at the odds for tonight’s Gator game against the Texas Southern Tigers.

Following a six-day layoff, Florida basketball is back on the court tonight against the visiting Texas Southern Tigers. The Gators have started the season strong, winning their first six before dropping their most recent game to the Oklahoma Sooners, while TSU has floundered so far going winless in seven tries.

Monday night’s lopsided affair surely favors UF on paper, as it sits in the top 20 of both major polls while fielding what may be the strongest roster of head coach Mike White‘s tenure. A winless team from the Southwest Athletic Conference hardly stands a chance against these SEC reptiles, and the bookmakers agree.

On Monday morning, the Tipico Sportsbook favored the Gators by 22.5-points over the Tigers while the over/under is set at 137.5. The money lines for Florida and Texas Southern are minus-5000 and plus-1300, respectively, as of 10 a.m. EST.
