Report: Texas baseball could ‘shoot their shot’ with LSU’s Jay Johnson

Could Texas go after a future SEC rivals’ head coach?

The Texas Longhorns baseball team saw their 2024 season and the final one as members of the Big 12 came to an end with a loss to Louisana Ragin’ Cajuns last weekend. Texas beat ULL in their first matchup of the College Station Regional before a loss to them in the elimination game. ULL went on to lose to host Texas A&M, which sent the Aggies to the Super Regional.

Immediately following the loss, Texas baseball head coach David Pearce was fielding questions about his future in Austin. He is 494-271 after eight seasons with the Horns. He won three Big 12 regular season titles and was named Big 12 Coach of the Year twice.

After back-to-back College World Series appearances in 2021 and 2022, Texas failed to get back to the annual tournament in the last season, while winning a combined 78 games in that span.

Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball spoke with Matt Moscona of 104.5 ESPN in Baton Rouge. He expects the University of Texas to shoot their shot at current LSU Tigers baseball head coach Jay Johnson, should they opt to move on from Pierce.

Johnson won the 2023 College World Series with the No. 1 and No. 2 MLB draft picks, pitcher Paul Skenes and outfielder Dylan Crews. The Tigers missed the Super Regionals this past season in a campaign that didn’t look great early on. The team caught fire and made a run at the SEC Tournament title.

Johnson is 454-234 as a head coach at the Division I level with three College World Series appearances between Arizona and LSU.

This is a situation worth monitoring in the coming weeks.

A look back at the Texas Longhorns run through the softball postseason

Looking back at the Women’s College World Series with the best images for Texas.

It was an unfortunate ending for the Texas Longhorns softball season on Thursday night. After securing the No. 1 overall seed, they were swept by the Oklahoma Sooners in the Women’s College World Series championship final. Not a way you want to end the season but the team can hold their heads high after a record year.

The Longhorns, led by head coach Mike White, matched a school record with 55 wins. That mark was initially set in 2006 when Connie Clark led them to a 55-9 mark and secured a trip to the College World Series. That year Texas was bounced in the second round after losses to Arizona and UCLA.

Overall, the team can be proud of their regular-season Big 12 title led by top batter, Reese Atwood. She led the nation in home runs and RBIs. Standout freshman pitcher Teagan Kavan threw two one-hit shutouts to get the Longhorns to the championship final against their bitter rivals. In his sixth season with Texas, White coached the Horns to another Women’s College World Series and finished as the WCWS runner-up.

With the season coming to an end, here is a collection of the best photos from the postseason run.

Texas hosting 2025’s top athlete Michael Terry III over the weekend

Texas is checking in with five-star athlete Michael Terry III over the weekend.

The Texas Longhorns are poised for a big recruiting weekend highlighted by the No. 1 athlete in the country, Michael Terry III.

Terry is ranked as the No. 28 prospect overall according to 247Sports composite rankings. 247Sports has him rated higher at No. 20 overall and the No. 6 player in the Lone Star State.

Currently, there are no projections for where he will ultimately pledge to play in the 2025 season and beyond. Terry is considering the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, as well as Texas. He is a two-sport athlete having played football and competing in track.

As a junior, he rushed for 995 yards with 20 touchdowns to go along with 564 yards receiving with an additional 10 receiving touchdowns. Terry is quite the dynamic athlete in the state. Terry has already completed visits with Nebraska and Oregon, he will check in with the Aggies next week.

No timetable has been set for his commitment at this time.

Georgia tight end prospect lists Texas among top 10 schools

Texas is in the hunt for a top tight end in 2026.

On Thursday Georgia product and four-star tight end Heze Kent named his top 10 schools on X, formerly Twitter.

Among those 10 teams, you will find the Texas Longhorns among several other SEC programs such as Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, and Tennessee Vols. With how the offense performed over the last several seasons, especially with the breakout of Ja’Tavion Sanders, many more tight ends should want to come to play in Austin.

The Longhorns are heading into the 2024 season with one tight end from the Peach State already committed in the 2025 cycle, Emaree Winston. Winston is a four-star prospect and is rated as the No. 12 tight end in the country.

Kent is rated as the No. 7 tight end in the country and the No. 17 prospect from the state of Georgia in the 2026 cycle. Texas has one commitment to that class as of now. Three-star athlete Raycine Guillory committed to the Horns on Jan. 20 of this year.

Texas can’t slow down the Oklahoma juggernaut, falls 8-4

Texas unable to knock Oklahoma off the softball throne.

The Texas Longhorns softball season came to an end on Thursday night as the Oklahoma Sooners won their record fourth straight title. Oklahoma swept Texas with the 8-4 win on Thursday.

Texas would strike first in the second inning following the walk to catcher Reese Atwood and then Joley Mitchell. Centerfielder Kayden Henry drove Atwood around to draw first blood and give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Oklahoma’s Alyssa Brito would respond with a double off the wall. Two batters later rightfielder Kasidi Pickering knocked one out to take the lead at 2-1. The inning would end when head coach Mike White challenged that Oklahoma runner left base early, Rylie Boone was ruled out to end the Sooners’ threat.

Texas would knock Oklahoma pitcher Karlie Keeney out of the game with some two-out rally magic. Martinez would single up the middle and move to third on the single to right by Atwood. After a walk to Katie Stewart, the captain hit an RBI single up the middle. New pitcher Paytn Monticelli forced Mitchell to ground out to first to end the inning, leaving the game tied at 2-2.

The Longhorns would get back on top in the fourth when Henry singled and moved to second on a stolen base. She would get to third on a bunt by Dayton and scored on the error by Avery Hodge on a Mia Scott rocket hit into right field.

It wouldn’t last with Oklahoma coming to bat in the bottom of the inning. They would load the bases and were quickly unloaded on a bases clearing double off the bat of Cydney Sanders to jump ahead 5-3. Oklahoma would add three more runs in bottom of the sixth to build the lead to 8-4.

Oklahoma once again proved why they are at the top of the sport.

One analyst breaks down Texas’ move to SEC, quarterback situation

Fox Sports Joel Klatt shares why he doesn’t think there is any QB battle at Texas and how they will transition to the SEC

Despite coming up just a game shy of making it to their first national championship game since the 2009 season, the Texas Longhorns’ 2024 campaign was a massive success.

The Longhorns were able to go into Tuscaloosa and beat an Alabama Crimson Tide squad by double digits, claim a Big 12 title in their final year in the conference, and make it to the first-ever College Football Playoff game. An Alabama team, mind you, that also won the SEC and earned a berth in the CFP.

However, with one of the best defenses and quarterback rooms in the country heading into next season, the expectations in Austin are sky-high. Texas will be tasked with navigating one of the toughest schedules in the country with games against the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, and Oklahoma Sooners as they transition to their first year in the SEC.

QB [autotag]Quinn Ewers[/autotag] was named a second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2023 but has all of the talent to make a massive jump this season and become a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Unfortunately, Ewers’ surrounding cast will look much different than a year ago with Xavier Worthy, Jonathan Brooks, AD Mitchell, and Ja’Tavion Sanders all being selected in the first few rounds of this past draft.

Fox Sports college football expert Joel Klatt appeared on Colin Cowherd’s show this week where he discussed a variety of Texas football topics ranging from the conference transition to the quarterback room.

When Klatt was asked if he thought Texas would be a viable national title contender he said, “Texas is easily one of the four best teams in the country right now. No doubt about it. Anytime I get asked about Texas, by anybody that is not involved with the program, they all talk about Arch. When I go to Texas and I am around the program all they talk about is Quinn Ewers.”

Klatt and Cowherd’s discussion around Texas starts at about the 6:00 minute mark.

CFB expert Joel Klatt predicts 10 Games that will shape the 2024 college football season

Texas’s games against Michigan and Georgia ranked as two of the most important games of the 2024 season

From conference realignment to the beginning of the 12-team College Football Playoffs, the 2024 season starts a new era. The sport has already been rapidly changing between the introductions of NIL and the transfer portal, but now it will be on full display.

For the Texas Longhorns, joining the SEC and the playoff expansion could not have come at a better time. Going from the Big 12 to the SEC will be a major step up in competition, but the Longhorns have one of the two or three best rosters in college football next to Georgia and Ohio State and are much more equipped for the change than in years past.

Additionally, the expansion from four to 12 teams allows for Texas to drop a game against Georgia or Michigan without worrying about their postseason chances being ruined by one loss.

As a fan, the conference realignment makes for plenty of intriguing matchups on a week-to-week basis that wouldn’t have occurred in years past. For the Longhorns, the 2024 schedule is highlighted by a visit from the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs and a return to the Lone Star Series with a trip to College Station to take on bitter in-state rivals the Texas A&M Aggies.

Both games combined with a trip to Michigan make for one of the toughest schedules in the entire country for [autotag]Steve Sarkisian[/autotag] and his staff.

Fox Sports CFB expert Joel Klatt is as excited as anyone about the changes coming to the sport. On his podcast ‘The Joel Klatt Show’, the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback broke down the 10 games that will shape the 2024 season.

Klatt projects that Texas’ games against Michigan and Georgia are among the most important. With the Longhorns playing so many games on Fox, Klatt has covered as many Texas games over the past couple of years as anyone. The play-by-play announcer typically has a pretty good feel.

Texas softball falls to Oklahoma 8-3 in Game 1 of WCWS Championship

Oklahoma softball beats Texas 8-3 to pick up Game 1 of WCWS championship series

It took eight innings and a walk-off home run Tuesday night, but the Oklahoma Sooners snuck past the Florida Gators to get to the championship series to take on the Texas Longhorns.

The Longhorns won the regular season series 2-1 against the Sooners, however, Oklahoma got their revenge with a victory in the Big 12 title game to even the series at 2-2 on the year.

Standout pitcher Teagan Kavan never looked comfortable in the circle for the Longhorns as she gave up five earned runs in 2.1 innings with five hits and two walks allowed. Mac Morgan came into the game in relief to quiet the Sooners’ bats pitching 1.2 innings of shutout softball.

In game one of the championship series, it was all Oklahoma early as they rushed out to a 5-1 lead through five innings and never looked back. Overall, it was just a tough night for the Texas bats as they struggled to find much success against P Kelly Maxwell with just four hits on the night.

Texas would score three runs total in the game, the first coming off the bat of Mia Scott. It was the first time this season the Horns would lose a game in which she went yard. In the sixth inning, Vivi Martinez came around to score on a Katie Stewart single. The second run of the inning was scored by Alyssa Washington when Joley Mitchell singled to right.

The two bitter rivals will be back in action at 7:00 p.m. CT as the Longhorns attempt to avoid elimination and force a Game 3 Friday night.

Former Texas RB Bijan Robinson expects to see Christian McCaffery like role in 2024

Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson is expected to see a larger role in the offense in 2024.

When the Atlanta Falcons selected former Texas Longhorns superstar running back [autotag]Bijan Robinson[/autotag] No. 8 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, they knew he was going to be a key piece of the offense from year one.

As a rookie, Robinson accumulated 214 carries and 58 receptions for a combined 1,463 yards and eight touchdowns while appearing in all 17 games.

Despite bringing in QB Kirk Cousins via free agency and drafting QB Michael Penix No. 8 overall, Robinson is expected to see his load increase in year two. The Falcons have a ton of talent at the skill positions between TE Kyle Pitts, WR Drake London and WR Darnell Mooney, but with a new regime coming to Atlanta with head coach Raheem Morris they will get back to the basics and lead on their best player, Bijan.

Robinson is obviously a phenomenal player out of the backfield as he averaged 4.6 YPC last season, but he believes he will get back to being more of a true running back like we saw in Austin. When asked what he thinks that role might look like, Robinson said, “More so like how they use Christian (McCaffrey) down their in San Fransisco. So, that’s what kind of like the plan is here.”

McCaffrey was named the NFL’s 2023 Offensive Player of the Year as he led the league in rushing yards as well, so that should be a great sign for Robinson can do moving forward. However, McCaffery is still a massive asset out of the backfield for the Niners offense as he had 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven touchdowns.
