The 7th-seeded Texas Longhorns (21-12) take on the 2nd-seeded Tennessee Volunteers (25-8) Saturday in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip-off from Spectrum Center in Charlotte is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas vs. Tennessee odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Both schools made easy work of their 1st-round opponents in the Midwest Region Thursday, as Texas got past Colorado State 56-44, while Tennessee blasted Saint Peter’s 83-49. The Volunteers outlasted the Longhorns 82-71 in their last meeting Jan. 28, 2023, cashing as 5.5-point home favorites. G Zakai Zeigler, who led the SEC this season with 6 assists per game this season, had a double-double in the win last year with 22 points (3-of-6 from 3) and 10 assists.

Zeigler had 11 points and once again dished out 10 assists in the win over the Peacocks Thursday, becoming the 1st Volunteer to record a points-assists double-double in the NCAA Tournament. G Dalton Knecht, the 2023-24 SEC Player of the Year, led Tennessee with 23 points.

Despite going 1 of 14 from 3-point range as a team, Texas was still able to outlast Colorado State in the 1st round in big part due to a 17-0 points off turnovers advantage. F Brock Cunningham, the winningest player in Texas basketball history, led the way with 3 steals off the bench.

Texas vs. Tennessee picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 75, Texas 71

Moneyline

INCLUDE TENNESSEE ML (-275) IN A PARLAY.

The Vols (-275) shook off the SEC Tournament double-digit loss to Mississippi State by thoroughly dominating Saint Peter’s.

F Jonas Aidoo had 3 blocks in the win over Saint Peter’s, which put him in the top 3 in Tennessee’s single-season block list with 64 so far. Expect the junior to play angry once again and help his team advance to the Sweet 16.

However, I don’t recommend playing Tennessee straight up at this price. Include the Volunteers in a parlay or pass.

Against the spread

BET TEXAS +6.5 (-110).

This is a bit of a hedge as we root for a close game with the hope of Tennessee eeking it out.

This is too many points to give a Texas team, however, that should make more than a single 3-pointer like it did vs. the Rams. Texas coach Rodney Terry still expressed confidence in the scoring ability of F Dylan Disu despite the senior going 0 of 6 from 3 in his last game. Expect Disu to bounce back and play with physicality, as Tennessee coach Rick Barnes predicted, which should help keep the game close.

PASS.

Hard to predict exactly how Texas will respond offensively after the tough 3-point shooting performance vs. Colorado State. Plus, Tennessee features some tough defenders like G Jahmai Mashack as Terry pointed out. How will Longhorns G Max Abmas respond after going 1 of 6 from 3 on Thursday?

Texas at Tennessee odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas at Tennessee odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Two top-10 team meet when the 4th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (17-3) host the No. 10 Texas Longhorns (17-3) in Knoxville Saturday for an SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchup. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas vs. Tennessee odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

After the firing of coach Chris Beard earlier this season (following an arrest on felony domestic abuse charges), it was wait and see to find out how the Longhorns would manage the circumstances and if it would affect the morale of the team. At No. 10 in the country, the question has seemingly been answered and Texas is going to be fine.

In their last game, the Longhorns beat conference foe Oklahoma State 89-75 as an 8-point favorite Tuesday. This was Texas’ 2nd win in a row — it beat West Virginia 69-61 Jan. 21 as a 1-point road underdog. The Longhorns average 80.5 points per game (ranking 22nd according to NCAA.org) and allow 66.8 PPG (107th).

Meanwhile, Tennessee’s defense ranks 1st in least points allowed (53.7 PPG), 1st in opponent’s field-goal percentage (33.9%), 1st in 3-point percentage allowed (21.6%) and 9th in steals per game (9.7). Offensively, the Volunteers score 74.1 PPG (130th).

The strength of the Tennessee defense on its home court will look to take down the high-scoring offense of Texas. Whichever side is able to impose its will, will be the victors at the end of this one.

Texas at Tennessee picks and predictions

PASS.

This should be a close game, so there’s some value with Texas (+185). But let’s play it safe and take the points with the spread below.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

TEXAS +5.5 (-110) is the play.

Coming off a nice victory over Oklahoma State, Texas will be focused on scoring against the tough Tennessee defense. The Longhorns sit 2nd in the SEC — behind front-runner No. 2 Alabama — and are also coming off an impressive victory, routing Georgia 70-41 Wednesday as 16.5-point home favorites. The length of Texas will be a different matter for Tennessee as it will be forced to deal with talent it has not seen in its recent competition.

A close game is in store for this matchup between top-10 teams and the 5.5-point line is too much. The Volunteers often struggle following a dominating victory. In 8 games this season after holding an opponent to under 50 points, the Vols failed to cover the spread 6 times.

This will be another struggle for Tennessee. Texas will keep it close to the end.

Over/Under

BET OVER 132.5 (-115).

Despite Tennessee having the best defense in the nation, 4 of its last 5 games against winning teams have cashed Over tickets. Texas has also been playing a lot of games Over the total recently with 9 of its last 12 games hitting the Over.

With this being a close game down the stretch, both teams will look to get to the free-throw line and the points garnered there will help push this one Over.
