Five-star safety Derek Williams commits to Texas

ON FIRE! Williams is the second five-star player from Louisiana to commit to Texas for the 2023 class.

Five-star safety Derek Williams Jr. committed to the Texas Longhorns on Monday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back joins Arch Manning as the second five-star player from Louisiana to commit to Texas for the 2023 class.

247Sports national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna had the following to say about Williams:

Multi-dimensional run and cover strong safety or linebacker. … Projects as a high level multi-year starter at a Power Five program at the next level, could potentially be an all-conference linebacker within the right scheme fit.

This recruiting victory says a couple things. Not only can Texas battle with and win against SEC schools in recruiting, but they can defeat Nick Saban in head-to-head battles and defeat LSU for top players in Louisiana.

For Texas to reach its potential, they’ll need to get elite defensive talent. In Williams they get one of the best safeties in the nation. Pete Kwiatkowski will no doubt use his versatility as a featured role in his defense.

Williams is the No. 3 safety nationally and No. 3 overall player in Louisiana in the 247Sports composite.

COMMITTED: Jaydon Chatman and Andre Cojoe fortify Texas’ OL class

Texas reeled in two more big time offensive linemen.

Texas reeled in two more big time offensive linemen on Sunday evening. Jaydon Chatman and Andre Cojoe committed in favor of the Longhorns. The two linemen appeared to be toward the top of Kyle Flood’s priorities.

Cojoe has become a familiar name in Texas recruiting. The 6-foot-6, 330-pound lineman will look to lean on his imposing size to win battles at the next level.

The interior offense lineman from Mansfield Timberview High School took visits to Texas, TCU, and Vanderbilt. He received offers from Texas A&M, Nebraska, Arizona State and Oklahoma State among others.

Chatman is another huge get for the Longhorns. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman chose Texas over a number of suitors. His visit list included Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and LSU.

The four-star lineman from Harker Heights, Texas is a trailblazer for his running backs and fast off the line of scrimmage. He is the No. 9 interior offensive lineman in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Four-star wide receiver Jonah Wilson commits to Texas

BOOM! Jonah Wilson commits to Texas.

Arch Manning has another receiver to throw passes in the 2023 class. Four-star 2023 wide receiver Jonah Wilson committed to the Texas Longhorns Sunday afternoon.

Wilson joins Ryan Niblett in what could be one of Texas’ best receiver classes in a long time. The 6-foot-3 receiver from Dekaney High School has great body control and concentration when receiving the football. Wilson is adept at adjusting to catch off-target throws in midair. Dekaney frequently utilized Wilson’s jump-ball skills on throws downfield.

As a downfield threat, Wilson routinely left high school defenders in the dust. If that translates to the college level, he will become a focus of Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

Wilson received offers from Ohio State, LSU, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and others. After considering his options, Wilson decided to make his new home in Austin, Texas.

Wilson is the No. 34 receiver in the nation and No. 47 overall player in Texas, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Texas included in Johntay Cook’s top 3 schools

Johntay Cook is inching closer to a decision.

Johntay Cook is inching closer to a decision. On Friday evening, Cook narrowed his list of schools under consideration to three teams. Texas made the cut.

The elite receiver looks to now decide between Michigan, Oregon, and Texas.

It’s not difficult to see the allure of all three schools. Oregon has been one of the top programs in college football for the last two decades. Michigan has a blue-blood track record, but last year’s college football playoff appearance only strengthens Jim Harbaugh’s pitch.

Texas has a decided advantage over those schools at quarterback with the commitment of Arch Manning.

Cook has hinted at joining up with Arch Manning via a viral video from his TikTok account.

Should Cook choose the Longhorns, he would be the program’s first five-star receiver recruit since Bru McCoy and Jordan Whittington. A commitment from Cook would strengthen Texas’ chances for a top-class and SEC-ready roster when they leave the Big 12 conference.

Cook is the No. 6 receiver in the country in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Arch Manning swings national recruiting momentum to Texas

All eyes are on Texas.

After flying under the radar in recruiting, all eyes are on Texas for the 2023 class.

The Longhorns’ top five 2022 recruiting class went largely unnoticed nationally. Additionally, Steve Sarkisian hauled in Quinn Ewers and many other impact players from the transfer portal. In large part, the incredible 2022 haul was overshadowed by Texas A&M’s historic class.

The Aggies pulled in an unprecedented class that featured eight five-star recruits. Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher looked poised to ride the momentum of his top-class into 2023. That is until Arch Manning committed to Texas.

Arch Manning’s commitment dumped a cold bucket of water on the Aggies’ red-hot recruiting momentum. Now it has swung in the Longhorns’ favor.

Heading into a visit to College Station, Cedric Baxter Jr. appears to be trending toward the Longhorns. Baxter is among three skill position players that could commit to Texas soon. Now Texas will see how many positions it can recruit at the highest level.

Before Texas can compete nationally, it will need to win in-state recruiting battles with Texas A&M for defensive players. For now, Sarkisian’s offensive recruiting momentum is a promising start to the 2023 class.
