Texas shortstop Mitchell Daly enters the transfer portal

Mitchell Daly looks for a change of scenery after a three-year run at Texas.

Texas shortstop Mitchell Daly is in the transfer portal as of Friday morning. The key piece of the Longhorns baseball program over the last three seasons is looking for a change of scenery.

Daly batted .263 over his career at Texas in 171 starts for the team. After a strong 2021 saw him hit for a strong .316 average, the two years that followed saw some struggles at the plate.

Certainly, Daly is a loss for the team at baseball’s most premium position outside of pitcher. The leadership one would assume he brings to the team will be difficult to replace. So, too, will be the lost experience the Longhorns will have at the position.

If there’s one thing the past season illustrated for Texas, it’s that head coach David Pierce is capable of replacing lost talent and production. Though we were critical of Pierce in the offseason and after a slow start, he put together as good a season as one could have expected.

Texas will look to retool at the position following a regular season Big 12 title and strong postseason performance.

The Texas Longhorns’ last appearance in the CWS remains a 10-2 loss to Texas A&M

After losing to Stanford, Texas’s last appearance in the College World Series remains a 10-2 loss to Texas A&M last season.

Bragging rights in college sports between bitter rivals sometimes matters more than recent wins and losses in some cases, and after the Texas Longhorns, who were one win away from their second consecutive appearance in the College World Series, were eliminated by the Super Regional host Stanford on Monday night.

Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth with a man in scoring position, Stanford’s Drew Bower skied a ball into center field, which to all of our surprise, led to Texas’s Eric Kennedy being blinded by the stadium lights, as the ball painfully dropped to the ground resulting in a walk-off RBI single for the Cardinal, who are back to their second CWS appearance with the victory.

This could have happened to anyone, especially in a night game when most stadium lighting will affect vision in reflection with the night sky. Still, for all the outside flack Texas A&M and head coach Jim Schlossnagle have received this season, their successful run in the SEC Tournament combined with a solid showing in the Regional before falling to the better Stanford team is something to be proud of, no matter the final result. And for anyone out there criticizing Kennedy for the mistake, TexAgs’ Ryan Brauninger said it best.

However, the Aggies still hold one advantage on the diamond over the Texas fanbase that is probably still sulking as of today; Texas’s last appearance in the College World Series remains a 10-2 loss to Texas A&M, and as I stated in a previous article, strategically avoiding The Longhorns only to watch them lose to the same Stanford team that booted them from the Tournament just a week prior was not only genius but makes for one heck of a reunion on the gridiron in 2024.

Call this petty if you must, but facts are facts, and until these two teams meet again in any capacity, trash-talking on Twitter is something you all can do in your spare time. Gig ’em, and BTHO off-season.

After Game 2 loss, Texas’ title hopes rest on its best MLB prospect

Tanner Witt takes the mound with an opportunity to bounce back.

The Texas Longhorns dropped Game 2 of their series with the Stanford Cardinal late Sunday night. As we expected, Stanford was a tougher challenge for Lebarron Johnson Jr. after a masterful performance against Miami.

On the other side, Stanford pitcher Quinn Mathews missed several bats on his way to 16 strikeouts on 156 pitches. The good news for the Longhorns is that they shouldn’t have to face Quinn Mathews in the finale. The bad news is that there will be a finale after last night’s 8-3 loss.

Highly regarded MLB prospect and Texas starter Tanner Witt steps into the pressure cooked situation for the Longhorns in the closeout game. Monday’s elimination game isn’t the first full-count, do-or-die scenario Witt has faced, and there’s reason to believe he’s up to the task.

Witt will need help from his offense after the lineup struggled in Game 2. In its 16 strikeouts, the team was seen swinging at several pitches outside of the strike zone. It’s unclear whether or not Texas batters were anticipating backdoor sliders, but the Longhorns showed little discipline at the plate for the game.

The final game of the series is set to take place Monday night at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN. Both Witt and the Texas lineup will look to bounce back from struggling the last time both took the field.

Texas uses 9th inning comeback to beat Stanford, 7-5

A five-run ninth inning helped Texas past Stanford in Game 1 of the super regional.

Texas won a thriller over Stanford on Saturday night. It needed late-game heroics to get it done.

The Longhorns didn’t play very good baseball for much of the game. Early on the team looked tense and consumed with the importance of the matchup for the series.

Texas starting pitcher Lucas Gordon struggled for his own standards on the night. He didn’t get rocked by any means allowing just three runs in the outing. He simply missed on a couple pitches and Stanford made him pay.

The Texas bats were quiet for most of the game, but were helped by the Stanford defense in the ninth inning. A bases-loaded error plated two Longhorns and closed the deficit to 5-4. An RBI groundout tied the game at 5 before Porter Brown gave Texas the lead with a clutch two-RBI single with two outs.

It’s difficult to overstate the significance of the win for Texas. The Longhorns will face Stanford’s staff ace in Game 2. Fortunately the team won’t be on the brink of elimination.

Texas will look to advance to the College World Series with a win on Sunday.

It’s all part of the plan: Aggies purposely lose once again to avoid playing Texas

It’s simply all a part of the plan, as the Aggies have avoided facing the Texas Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament before joining the SEC in 2024. Muhahaha!

Texas A&M (38-27) saw their 2023 postseason end at the hands of Regional Host Stanford (42-17), losing 7-1 just days after defeating the Cardinal 8-5 before dropping two straight contests disappointingly.

Even worse, the Aggies’ porous offense squandered a solid outing from junior RHP Nathan Dettmer, who lasted six innings with eight strikeouts, as freshman outfielder Jace LaViolette produced A&M’s only run off of a solo shot in the second.

As head coach Jim Schlossnagle and the team are set to return to College Station on Tuesday evening, the loss has a definite upside that no one has the guts to say out loud; To avoid facing the Texas Longhorns, losing in Palo Alto to the nerdiest school in the country was a must to save every ounce of bad blood before the 2024 season, as Texas is set to join the SEC next year.

No offense to Texas A&M, but having to face a much hotter Longhorns squad, who won two straight over Regional host Miami to reach the Super Regional round, is just an unneeded hassle, so sending them to Palo Alto to take on Stanford is the best insult the Aggies can provide.

Yes, Texas fans are going through an emotional roll-coaster ranging from hurling Twitter insults towards TexAgs’ Billy Liucci to ignoring the fact that Stanford has scored 20 runs in their last two home games; their anger towards the Maroon and White will continue to grow, which is great news ahead of 2024. Gig ‘Em! I’m kidding. Laughter is the best medicine, after all!
