Upset Alert: Looking at football teams who could upset Texas in 2023

Just because Texas shouldn’t lose to these teams doesn’t mean they’re in the clear.

Texas has often fallen prey to lesser teams in recent seasons. The Longhorns failed to play up to standard every season since losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2009 national title game.

There are a handful of teams capable of pulling upsets over the team given recent trends for the program. Since joining the Big 12 Conference, West Virginia and TCU have combined to go 13-9 against Texas despite each team having a handful of its own lean years.

Oklahoma State has gone a staggering 9-4 in its last 13 games against Texas. The minefield of potential upsets is why we’re not predicting a college football playoff semifinal appearance.

Texas should be favored in all but the Alabama game this season. And frankly, if it were in Austin or on a neutral site the line could shift toward the Longhorns. Texas-friendly betting lines don’t always mean much for the program as it endured several upsets in recent seasons.

Here’s a look at games Texas could lose and why it could lose those games.

Ranking the five most difficult games on Texas’ 2023 schedule

These matchups could give Texas some trouble in 2023.

Texas’ 2023 football schedule was finally released by the Big 12 Conference this week.

This upcoming season marks the first year of the new-look Big 12 following the addition of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF.

The Longhorns’ slate features two matchups against the leagues newcomers, Texas travels to Houston and hosts BYU in October.

Texas is only forced to leave its home state two times during the season, making the trip to Alabama and Iowa State. The Horns play in-state road games at TCU, Baylor and Houston, along with the annual neutral site game in Dallas against Oklahoma.

2023 is a significant year for Steve Sarkisian and the Texas program. Returning 17 out of 22 starters and bringing in another top-five recruiting class, expectations are high in Austin. Texas feels like it is Big 12 championship or bust entering the new campaign.

Here is a look at the five matchups that could give Texas the most trouble on its 2023 schedule.

Texas Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Longhorns miss from the Big 12 slate?

Considering the Longhorns are leaving soon for the SEC, it might have been nice to mostly miss the new Big 12 teams on the schedule. For the most part, that happened.

They have to play Houston and BYU, but they miss both Cincinnati and UCF. Considering BYU is coming to Austin – and there’s no dangerous trip to Provo – that’s not a bad thing.

West Virginia and Texas don’t exactly have a rich history, so that’s not all that bad a miss from the slate nostalgia-wise. Missing Oklahoma State, though, isn’t fun, but it’s a good break considering …

Texas Football Schedule What Really Matters

There might be two road games in a row late in the year – at TCU and Iowa State – and considering the Oklahoma game is in Dallas, there are just six home games. That’s not a lot for a program of this caliber, but there’s one big plus.

Texas doesn’t leave Texas all that often.

Going to Houston isn’t exactly a killer road trip, and Baylor and TCU keep the team in the state – that always matters with this fan base. There’s a road game at Iowa State to go along with that date with Bama – that’s it for the games outside of the state.

Texas Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

At Alabama. For a Texas team that has the talent to possibly do what TCU pulled off, that’s a killer of a road trip considering how manageable the rest of the schedule is.

11-2 with a Big 12 Championship almost certainly doesn’t get it done in a four-team College Football Playoff era, so realistically, Texas probably has to be perfect outside of that trip to Tuscaloosa.

Going to TCU is dangerous, and Oklahoma is always going to be a concern even after last year’s debacle, but that’s about it. Yeah, it really might be possible to run the table outside of the Bama game, but if the Longhorns can pull that off … look out.

2023 College Football Schedules: All 133 Teams

Texas’ 2023 football schedule officially released

Here is a complete look at Texas’ 2023 football schedule.

The long wait for the 2023 Big 12 football schedule is finally over. The conference announced the full slate of games with the four new additions to the league included.

Texas has six home games, five road games and its annual neutral site game against Oklahoma in Dallas. Steve Sarkisian’s squad has to leave the state of Texas only twice in 2023.

Texas opens the year by welcoming the Rice Owls to town on Sept. 2 before its premier matchup against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Wyoming comes to Austin to wrap up the nonconference slate.

Two new Big 12 programs are featured on Texas’ schedule this season. The Longhorns will travel to Houston and host BYU in October. Texas will not  play normal foes Oklahoma State and West Virginia in the regular season.

The 2023 season might be Texas’ last chance to win another Big 12 title before departing to the SEC.

Here is a complete look at Texas’ 2023 football schedule.

Oklahoma State brings more difficult challenges for the Texas defense

The next set of games will reveal how much the Texas defense has improved.

The Texas defense has made dramatic improvement statistically this season. The Longhorns are surrendering just 347.4 yards and 18.3 points per game. Albeit, it has come against lesser offensive competition.

Save for the Alabama offense, Texas hasn’t been challenged like they are about to be moving forward. Texas Tech and Oklahoma were without their starting quarterback. Iowa State and West Virginia aren’t the most dynamic offensive teams. UTSA and ULM were simply overmatched.

Saturday marks the beginning of an offensive gauntlet for the Longhorns. Oklahoma State and TCU loom as teams who could capitalize on Texas’ weaknesses in the passing game. Kansas State presents an athletic, dynamic challenge in their backfield with Adrian Martinez and Deuce Vaughn. Even Baylor and Kansas have proven to be explosive offensively.

Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense has been able to overcome questionable play calls and mental lapses to this point, but that may end this week. The remaining offenses Texas faces can be expected to call near-perfect games against the Longhorns. Kwiatkowski will need to be sharp down the stretch.

Here’s a look at the Longhorns’ remaining schedule.
