Steve Sarkisian addresses Texas’ quarterback situation ahead of Iowa State matchup

Steve Sarkisian says Casey Thompson is the guy…for now?

Steve Sarkisian is sticking to his guns. The first-year head coach told the media on Monday that Casey Thompson will remain the starter going forward.

The announcement comes just days after Texas lost their third consecutive game in which they have blown double-digit leads.

Going to Thompson after Hudson Card’s struggles against Arkansas may have been a tad premature considering Card is just a freshman that was starting his second career game, and the team as a whole played terribly against the Razorbacks.

However, it was understandable at the time because Thompson was much more decisive, made plays with his legs, and was putting points on the board. Thompson then benefited from playing Rice, Texas Tech, and TCU who have a combined 11-14 record, and two of those teams have since fired their head coach.

Thompson has been all over the place the past couple weeks, as he had a statistically great game against Oklahoma that saw him throw five touchdowns, but it has been his second half performances that have many questioning if he is the right guy to be behind center. If you look at his splits from the first half of games and the second half of games, it has been a complete Jackal and Hyde performance.

In the first half, Thompson is statistically one of the best players in the nation, but as soon as halftime ends, he struggles immediately. In first half of games, he has accumulated 11 passing touchdowns, 934 passing yards, and is completing 66% of his passes. However, his numbers take a major hit in the second half of games, as he has 620 yards, six touchdowns, and his completion percentage drops to 61%.

This can also be attributed to the horrible offensive line and wide receiver drops, or perhaps Steve Sarkisian and his staff not accounting for adjustments by other teams. However, this Week 10 matchup against Iowa State will be a major test for a Longhorns offense that is second half deficient, as the Cyclones are home to the No. 5 defense in the nation in terms of total defense.

If the Longhorns lose this game, and Thompson has another roller coaster performance where he is missing throws and making costly mistakes, it may be time for Card to reassume the starting job. While Sarkisian did say Thompson is the starter, he did not rule out that Card will play or start again.

They will play two of the worst teams in the Big 12 in Kansas and West Virginia, and finish the season off with a tough Kansas State team before a bowl game, assuming they make one. What better time to give the quarterback of the future time to grow and gain more experience?

Sarkisian has reiterated multiple times he doesn’t want to switch quarterbacks, but it was obvious from the jump that he never truly knew which quarterback to trust, as he made them split time against Louisiana well before the game was truly out of reach. Sarkisian seems to be suffering from not wanting to be wrong again about the starting quarterback, and it might be hurting a team that was once expected to contend for the Big 12 Championship.

Steve Sarkisian will start Casey Thompson at quarterback against Rice

Steve Sarkisian announced Casey Thompson will get the starting nod against Rice over Hudson Card, but both will play.

Steve Sarkisian has made a move at quarterback after Saturday’s brutal display against Arkansas.

The head coach announced on Monday that Casey Thompson will get the nod against Rice over Hudson Card. Both quarterbacks have played in the first two games of the season and produced at certain points.

Card was named the initial starter after winning the competition over the past eight months. Sarkisian claims the battle was close throughout, even calling it one of the hardest decisions he ever had to make.

Sarkisian says Card will still get playing time against the Owls. He has said the same thing about Thompson the previous two weeks and stayed true to his word. Switches have come sometime in the third quarter on both occasions.

Thompson came on late against the Razorbacks and was able to get the offense moving. Texas scored 14 points during his two drives. Both were 75 yards downfield and took at least 10 plays.

Card struggled throughout the game. The offensive line was not great but the redshirt freshman missed on a few throws as well. In just his second career start, playing in a hostile environment did not help Card’s cause.

“I thought Hudson was a little antsy in the pocket,” Sarkisian said. “We weren’t great at protecting him early in the game, but we missed some opportunities.”

Against a weaker opponent, it will be difficult to judge the two going into Big 12 play.

Steve Sarkisian confirms Texas QB Hudson Card will start vs Louisiana

Steve Sarkisian confirmed during his press conference on Monday that Hudson Card will be the starting quarterback against Louisiana.

The first big decision of the Steve Sarkisian era has been made. After eight months of a quarterback battle between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson, the head coach has named his starter.

After Horns247 reported Card was going to be the starting quarterback, Sarkisian confirmed during his press conference on Monday. He will be the first quarterback not named Sam Ehlinger to start for the Longhorns since the 2017 season.

After working as the third-stringer last season, Card’s spring and fall separated him from Thompson, who had more real game experience during last season.

“Hudson Card has earned the right to be the starter,” Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian called the new starter a good pocket passer alongside being able to make plays while on the run. Card’s deep ball was also complimented while still being able to make accurate shorter throws.

If Texas’ wide receivers are healthy and can perform, the Longhorns’ offense has the potential to be special. Card has the talent to be the best quarterback to play for Texas since Colt McCoy.

Despite Card being the starter, Sarkisian says Thompson is going to get playing time against Louisiana. The head coach says last year’s backup has “earned it” and was impressive during last week’s scrimmage.

“I know Casey is going to play,” Sarkisian said. “When, how much, I’m not exactly certain. We’re going to need both quarterbacks as this season goes on.”

Thompson easily becomes the best backup quarterback in the country. All it takes is one slight injury before an opportunity arises. If the Oklahoma native decides to stay in the program for the 2021 season, Sarkisian claims he will have the chance to get on the field.

For now, get used to No. 1 taking snaps in the burnt orange. His first test of the season will come right away against an experienced Louisiana defense.

The Steve Sarkisian era has officially begun.

How Texas’ quarterback battle could shake out, affect the program

Here are the four ways the Texas quarterback battle could shake out.

After the first scrimmage of fall camp, Steve Sarkisian was less than thrilled with the performances from Hudson Card and Casey Thompson. Both struggled against a defense the head coach had praise for during his press conference.

“Neither guy played up to the standard that I view as acceptable, and I think what they view as acceptable,” said Sarkisian. “And that’s part of the process.”

Before the scrimmage, Sarkisian mentioned how difficult of a decision this was going to be for him. Both players have performed well over the nearly 20 practices they have had, but neither Card nor Thompson has stood out.

Not only does the future of the quarterback room depend on the decision, but a ripple effect will be within the program for years. Here are the four ways the Texas quarterback battle could shake out and how certain decisions will affect each other.

Texas quarterback battle toughest of Steve Sarkisian’s career

Everything about Steve Sarkisian’s years could be defined by the current quarterback battle. He called it the toughest of his career.

The future of Texas football is in the hands of Steve Sarkisian. Not only with the bigger picture but in the short term as well. Everything about his years at Texas could be defined by the current quarterback battle.

Hudson Card and Casey Thompson have been battling for the starting spot ever since the end of the 2020 season. Thompson began with an advantage thanks to his outstanding Alamo Bowl performance against Colorado.

Fifteen spring practices were nowhere near enough to make the choice as the battle bleeds into fall camp. Something eventually has to give, with the deadline of Sept. 4 fast approaching.

Not only does Sarkisian know his pending decision is an important one, but tough as well. In fact, it’s one he described as the toughest quarterback decision of his career.

“Neither of them are making it easy,” said Sarkisian. “I wanted them to make it hard on us and they’re doing just that.”

You can see the full quote here:

Making the comparison to USC’s battle of Matt Cassel and Matt Leinart, Pete Carroll and his staff ended up going with the younger quarterback with a lot of upside. They went on to win two national championships with Leinart.

Of course, minus the two national championships, this would relate to Sarkisian eventually picking Card to be the starter. The difference could be though, Thompson would take advantage of the transfer portal instead of hanging around in Austin as Cassel did.

There was a subtle hint during the spring game possibly showing Texas’ hand as to why the Austin native will win the battle, but nothing outside of that.

Plenty of important decisions are ahead of Sarkisian over the next month. As usual, none will be more noteworthy than the quarterback.
