Will Jarrett Patterson play this week? Injury updates for Texans OL

Houston Texans OL Jarrett Patterson is dealing with a concussion. Here are the latest updates.

With the Houston Texans on a short week, players currently injured might be out once more if not fully cleared.

That seems to be the case for second-year offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson who suffered a concussion during Sunday’s 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Will Patterson suit up on “Thursday Night Football” when the Texans take on the New York Jets? Here’s what happened and his current status entering Tuesday’s walkthrough.

 Jarrett Patterson injury update

Patterson, who replaced former first-round pick Kenyon Green, suffered a concussion during the second quarter when he set up a block for Joe Mixon’s 14-yard touchdown run. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said on Monday that the former Notre Dame offensive lineman was in the concussion protocol.

“Jarrett did a really nice job when he went in and had some good plays,” Ryans said. “Unfortunately, he was out and Kenyon was back in.”

While the Texans didn’t practice Monday, Patterson would have been out. He can’t partake in contact drills until he clears the team’s protocol with the medical staff.

How long will Jarrett Patterson be out?

With it being a short week of practice, it’s best to assume that Patterson won’t play Thursday evening against the AFC East opponent. Green, who improved when he returned to the starting lineup, likely will start for the ninth consecutive game.

Jarrett Patterson stats

Patterson started last season at left guard after Green was ruled out with a season-ending shoulder injury. He suffered a knee injury in Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers and was placed on the injured reserve.

Texans OL depth chart

The Texans should feel good about their depth on the offensive line, but questions rise when asked who can start.  Here’s the rest of the interior offensive linemen on the active roster:

  • Kenyon Green
  • Kendrick Green
  • Nick Broeker

Texans-Colts Week 8: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

Here’s the snap count from the Texans’ 23-20 win over the Colts on Sunday at NRG Stadium.

Joe Mixon is off to the race for the fourth time in five games and loves nothing more than showing up against the Indianapolis Colts.

Mixon headlined the Houston Texans’ offense with a 102-yard rushing performance in Sunday’s 23-20 win at NRG Stadium. With that performance, Mixon became the first player in NFL history to have at least 100 yards rushing and a TD run in four of his first five games with a team.

“I’m in my element. I’m in my zone,” Mixon said. “It’s a great thing where I can be able to try to do whatever I can to put the team on my back.”

While Mixon found the end zone on a 14-yard run during the second quarter, C.J. Stroud also had a strong outing through the air. A week after throwing for 86 yards, Stroud threw for 285 yards and a touchdown while helping Houston secure a 3-0 lead in the AFC South division standings.

Houston’s defensive front also delivered, totaling five sacks, 11 tackles for loss and two turnovers. Jalen Pitre’s interception against Anthony Richardson in the second quarter led to a Tank Dell 7-yard touchdown before halftime.

Danielle Hunter’s strip sack secured the win after Richardson tried to find one of his receivers on a last-second Hail Mary attempt.

Here’s the total for Sunday’s game at Lambeau.

Offensive snaps: 71
Defensive snaps: 64
Special teams snaps: 13

Stefon Diggs, who finished with a team-leading five catches for 81 played a season-low 38 snaps after leaving in the third quarter with a knee injury. Without him, John Metchie III played a season-high 20 snaps. Xavier Hutchinson played 44 snaps. Robert Woods played 24.

Defensively, Neville Hewitt played all 64 snaps at middle linebacker and served as the Texans’ captain in place of Azeez Al-Shaair. Newcomer Devin White played in only 50% of snaps while Jake Hasen rotated in as the replacement for Henry To’oTo’o.

In his first game back, rookie cornerback Kamari Lassiter played 100% of snaps opposite Derek Stingley Jr. He had three pass breakups and a near-interception in the second quarter.

The Texans hit the road on a short week to face off against the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT.

Texans OL Kenyon Green gives honest assessment of performance in Week 8 win over Colts

Kenyon Green will be the first to tell you that his performance on Sunday for the Houston Texans was not up to his standard.

(This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccurate headline.)

Kenyon Green didn’t need to hear outsiders break down his performance in the Houston Texans’ 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

The third-year offensive lineman knew he wasn’t good enough to stay in the game after the first three drives.

“I wasn’t playing well, so they had to make changes,” Green said postgame.

Nearing the end of the first quarter, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans elected to pull Green from the starting lineup in favor of second-year lineman Jarrett Patterson. Ten plays and 70 yards later, Houston tied the game at 10 as Patterson opened a running lane for Joe Mixon to score on a 14-yard run.

But the touchdown came at a cost. Patterson remained on the ground after running into Colts linebacker E.J. Speed. He was helped off the field and later ruled out and he was treated for a concussion.

That led to Green returning for the rest of the afternoon. After allowing an early sack, the former first-round pick improved, though he did allow Grover Stewart to win his one-on-one battle to tackle Mixon for a loss of six yards in the third quarter.

“Do my job, that’s all I need to do,” Green said.

The Texans’ offensive line has dealt with issues all season. Last week, the unit was criticized for allowing quarterback C.J. Stroud to be under pressure for 48% of drop-backs. According to NextGen stats, it was worse this week at 57.5%, even without Green in the starting lineup.

“It felt like we can definitely be better, especially on my end,” Green told reporters.

Green has been the team’s most inconsistent option, but he enters Sunday as potentially the only one left. Patterson must clear concussion protocol before he can return to practice at full capacity.

The Texans have a short week ahead, facing the Jets in New York on Thursday night. Green could be required to start and given one last chance to remain the full-time option, but DeMeco Ryans did not specify what’s the plan moving into a quick turnaround on Monday.

“As we keep going, we’ll keep evaluating our offensive line and see where our guys are,” Ryans said.

Instant Analysis: Texans avoid Anthony Richardson comeback, sweep Colts in 2024

The Houston Texans move to 6-2 on the regular season after securing a 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts at NRG Stadium.

Rivalry games are a must-watch.

Even down to the last second.

One final hurrah to pull off the upset, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richarson was strip-sacked by Danielle Hunter to help the Houston Texans secure a 23-20 victory at NRG Stadium.

The Texans (6-2) now improve to 3-0 in the division with the sweep over the Colts. Houston can also end the month of October at 4-1 if it beats the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.

C.J. Stroud wasn’t at his best, but he managed to make up for his underwhelming outing in Week 7. After throwing for 86 yards against the Green Bay Packers, Stroud completed 25-of-37 pass attempts for 285 yards and a touchdown.

Joe Mixon remained the constant on the ground, totaling his fourth 100-yard rushing performance (102) in five games off 25 carries. He also tied the game at 10-10 with a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Richardson, who finished 10-of-32 passing, found a spark to close out the first quarter with a 69-yard touchdown pass to Josh Downs. After that, he only finished one other drive with 70 yards.

Following the two-minute warning, Richardson missed a pass intended for Downs and was intercepted by Jalen Pitre. That set up a Tank Dell 7-yard touchdown reception to extend Houston’s lead by seven.

Houston never lost the lead, but it never pulled away. Richardson connected on a 25-yard pass to Downs to set up a 1-yard touchdown run from Jonathan Taylor.

On second-and-goal, Mixon fumbled at the 18-yard line. The ball was recovered by Colts defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo for a 78-yard touchdown return, but upon further review, Odeyingbo was ruled down by contact. Indianapolis punted three plays later.

Richardson found Trey Sermon for a pickup of 14 yards before rushing to the line to spike the ball with one-second remaining. The Texans’ pass rush missed on the first attempt but rebounded when Danielle Hunter closed the running lane and stripped the ball loose, which was later recovered by Will Anderson Jr.

Taylor, who’s been known for his ability to win on the ground against Houston, was held to 105 yards. Hunter finished with a team-leading two sacks.

Stefon Diggs finished with a team-leading five catches for 81 yards. Diggs left late in the third quarter with a non-contact knee injury and did not return.

Kickoff from MetLife Stadium on Thursday is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Watch: Texans DB Jalen Pitre records first interception of 2024 in rival game

Houston Texans defensive back Jalen Pitre recorded his first interception since his rookie season against Colts QB Anthony Richardson

Kamari Lassiter nearly had a pick-six on second down.

Jalen Pitre finished the assignment on the next play.

On 3rd-and-5 with less than a minute remaining in the first half, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson elected to go to the air again for the conversion.

He paid for it as Pitre came down with his first interception of the regular season and his first since Week 17 of the 2022 campaign.

Outside of the 69-yard passing touchdown, Houston has shut down the Colts passing attack. Richardson finished the first half 2-for-15 with 81 yards and a touchdown and an interception.

Richardson’s 13.3% completion percentage is the lowest in a half in Colts history since 1991.

Despite the lack of a passing game, Indianapolis has remained in the game due to continued struggles along the offensive line.

Houston’s defense has eight takeaways in the 10 quarters after recording just three in the first five games.

Pitre’s interception is the first Texans takeaway at NRG Stadium since Week 2.

With a win, the Texans will finish at least .500 in divisional play for the 2024 season.

Texans schedule: Is Houston playing today?

Is Houston playing today? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

Will the Houston Texans be on the field today in Week 8 of the NFL football season?

Following a 24-22 loss against the Green Bay Packers in Week 7, the Texans will return to the NRG Stadium this afternoon to face the Indianapolis Colts in a divisional matchup with more than just bragging rights on the line.

Houston will look for its third consecutive win against an AFC South foe while also remaining undefeated at home.

It’s a hotly-anticipated matchup that will feature two former top-five picks in C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson. Back in Week 1, Stroud connected twice with Stefon Diggs for touchdown passes. Nico Collins capped off the afternoon with a 100-yard outing on six catches, while Joe Mixon rushed for over 150 yards.

Houston’s defense continues to be a top unit in the NFL, while Indianapolis’ offense is getting healthy at the right time with the return of Jonathan Taylor.  He’s been an Achilles heel for the Texans since 2020, rushing for over 120 yards in three of the previous four matchups.

Here’s how to watch the Texans vs. Colts game today, including time, TV schedule and streaming information:

Will Jonathan Taylor play this week? Injury updates for Colts RB

Will Jonathan Taylor be back for the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8 against the Houston Texans?

Jonathan Taylor is back in action.

If the Houston Texans can’t duplicate their success from Week 1 against the Pro Bowl runner, they’re in for a long afternoon at NRG Stadium.

As the Texans take on the Indianapolis Colts, both teams are trending in different directions. Houston (5-2) is without its star receiver Nico Collins and several defensive players, including linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and defensive back Jimmie Ward.

Indianapolis (4-3) recently announced that defensive tackle DeForest Buckner would come off the injured reserve and make his debut in Week 8 on the road. Receiver Josh Downs is also expected to play after missing several games with a lower-body injury.

And Taylor? Barring a last-second injury, expect to see him on the field for the first time in three weeks.

Jonathan Taylor injury update

Taylor suffered an ankle injury in Week 4’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Colts coach Shane Steichen never put a timetable on the All-Pro running back’s injury but did mention it would be a “week-to-week” evaluation.

Taylor practiced for a third consecutive day Friday and was not given a status designation on the week’s final injury report, meaning he’s cleared to play on Sunday in hopes of securing a tie for the AFC South division title. Taylor has been known as a Texans’ tyrant over his tenure since being drafted out of Wisconsin in 2020, especially in recent years.

In Week 18 against the Texans last year, Taylor rushed for 188 yards and scored a touchdown in a 23-19 loss. In 2022, he rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown in the Week 1 opener.

Taylor still is on pace to rush for over 1,000 yards for the third time in his career. In four active games this season, he’s averaging 87.3 yards per contest with four touchdowns. Taylor also has totaled 11 explosive runs of over 10 yards.

How long will Jonathan Taylor be out?

Taylor will suit up for the first time since Week 4. He is not expected to miss any more time because of his previous injury.

Colts RB depth chart

Indianapolis’ run game has been inconsistent this year without Taylor. Tyler Goodson and Trey Sermon have rotated as the top option, but quarterback Anthony Richardson ranks second in rushing yards with 197.

Goodson totaled 51 yards in games against the Titans and Dolphins and scored a touchdown in Week 7. Sermon averaged 4.5 yards in Sunday’s win over Miami.

All 32 NFL quarterbacks (including C.J. Stroud) ranked by Total QBR post Week 7

Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud remains one of the top passers in QBR rankings entering Week 8.

Houston Texans second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud needs a rebound this Sunday as the AFC South favorites return home.

While the Texans would love nothing more than to get back to their winning ways, Stroud just needs a moral boost.

The former Offensive Rookie of the Year is coming off his worst performance since being drafted out of Ohio State in 2023. He completed 10-of-21 pass attempts for 86 yards and only picked up six first downs as the Texans fell to 5-2 in a 24-22 loss against the Green Bay Packers.

With that negative performance, Stroud dropped six spots from  No. 6 to No. 12 in ESPN’s Total QBR rankings this week. ESPN gave Stroud a 22.1 QBR rating against Green Bay, which marks the second-lowest score of his career.

Stroud’s traditional passer rating against New England was 58.8, which marked the second-lowest rating of his career. He posted a 54.8 rating in a 30-6 loss against the New York Jets after leaving early in the second quarter.

The Total QBR differs from the traditional passer rating. According to ESPN, the QBR incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties.”

The metric also considers scenarios that a traditional passer rating overlooks and  looks ata team’s level of success or failure on every play to provide the proper context and then allocates credit to the quarterback and his teammate to produce a clearer measure of quarterback efficiency.”

Through six games, Stroud’s thrown four interceptions and been sacked 20 times. Two turnovers came in the 34-7 loss against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

Here’s a look at where Stroud stacks up against the NFL’s other starting quarterbacks entering Week 8 when it comes to QBR.

Here’s the total snap count for the Houston Texans in their Week 1 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

The Houston Texans bested the Indianapolis Colts, 29-27, on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium, improving to 1-0 on the year.

Behind a 159-yard performance from Joe Mixon, the Texans dominated on offense. They held the ball for 40 minutes and nearly 25 minutes in the second half.

Stefon Diggs made his presence felt with six catches for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Nico Collins picked up his third 100-yard performance against Indianapolis in two years, along with six receptions.

The defense wasn’t perfect, but it managed to pressure Anthony Ricardson into making mistakes. Calen Bullock recorded his first career interception. Foley Fatukasi and Mario Edwards Jr. each totaled a sack.

Here are the snap counts for every player that contributed to the Texans’ Week 1 win.

Offensive snaps: 80
Defensive snaps: 45
Special teams snaps: 19

It was an overall solid snap spread for the Texans’ roster with just about every healthy body getting field time. The starting five offensive linemen saw all 80 snaps. Collins, who finished with a team-leading 117 yards, finished with the most snaps among the skill players at 64.

Jimmie Ward and Azeez Al-Shaair lived up to their captain persona, playing all 45 snaps. Rookie Kamari Lassiter also didn’t miss a rep when playing in coverage. Bullock and veteran Eric Murray each saw 25 reps at safety.

The Texans return to NRG Stadium for the home opener against the Chicago Bears this Sunday at 7:20 p.m. It marks the first primetime game for Houston since its Thursday Night showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9 back in 2022.
