Texans sign DE Kingsley Jonathan to reserve-future deal

The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with former Buffalo Bills defensive Kingsley Jonathan to a reserve-future deal.

There’s a new member joining the Houston Texans’ offseason roster.

The Texans have agreed to terms with former Buffalo Bills defensive end Kingsley Jonathan to a reserve-future deal. Jonathan, who started three seasons at Syracuse, went undrafted and signed with the Bills last offseason.

He’s a former top overall pick in the Canadian Football League draft by the Montreal Alouettes. Jonathan has played for the Chicago Bears where he racked up 10 tackles, including two for losses.

With the Orange, Jonathan finished his college career at 101 tackles, 21 1/2 for losses, 15 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

The Texans, who finished 11-8 following a second AFC South division title under C.J. Stroud, own the No. 25 overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Texans add rangy OL in 1st round of Draft Wire’s mock draft

Armand Membou could be the next addition to the Houston Texans roster in 2025.

The Houston Texans must upgrade the offensive line if C.J. Stroud stands a chance of making it to the conference championship round in 2025. Shaq Mason and Tytus Howard could be on the move while Kenyon Green’s stay in Houston has more than likely reached its end.

Position flexibility could be essential for the Texans moving into 2025. Howard might rework his contract and shift inside to guard full-time after taking over for Green midseason. Meanwhile, second-round pick Blake Fisher managed the right tackle spot, but he left ample room to critique upon entering the offseason.

That’s exactly why Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire has the Texans selecting Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou in Round, who’s a rangy lineman with impressive athleticism.

A two-year starter for the Tigers, Membou graded out with a 90.9 grade from Pro Football Focus after allowing nine hurries and zero sacks in 410 pass-blocking snaps. In over 1,000 snaps, Membou only allowed three sacks in three years.

Membou is expected to start at right tackle in the pros, but could shift inside in a pinch. Entering training camp, a battle between Fisher and Membou could determine the future offensive line, with the loser shifting inside for the 2025 season.

Houston owns six picks in the upcoming draft this April.

Texans WR Stefon Diggs lands in ESPN’s top 50 NFL free agents for 2025 offseason

Stefon Diggs will have a market this offseason if he leaves the Houston Texans in free agency.

Stefon Diggs could be back in Houston for the 2025 season, but he’ll have interest in the open market from other contending rosters.

Multiple Texans players have voiced their opinions on a reunion with the four-time Pro Bowl receiver, including second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud, who said the duo’s chemistry was “just hitting” before Diggs suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 8.

While Diggs could return to Houston for Round 2 and a chance to better his market in 2026, ESPN views him as one of the top free agents despite injury. In the latest from Jeremy Fowler, the two-time All-Pro appeared at No. 26 on the top 50 free agent list heading into the 2025 offseason.

“An ACL injury limited Diggs to eight games this season, which is why he’s lower on this list,” Fowler wrote. “His play speed is also starting to slip. However, Diggs is a quality route runner who, once healthy and cleared to play next season, can create separation and produce after the catch. Diggs had 47 receptions for 496 yards this season, and he has 70 touchdowns over his 10 years in the NFL.”

Even though he’s entering his 11th season, Diggs has remained a constant weapon in the slot. He was on pace to notch his fifth 100-catch season in Bobby Slowik’s offense and was expected to be near the 1,000 receiving-yard marker with Nico Collins sidelined.

Diggs’ recovery time could determine his market. Right now, he’s expected to miss all of the offseason workouts but could be limited in training camp. If out for the start of the regular season, it’s not expected to be for long.

Entering the offseason, Diggs is the fourth-ranked receiver option entering free agency, trailing Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins (No. 1), Tampa Bay’s Chris Godwin (No. 5) and Buffalo’s Amari Cooper (No. 18). All three are expected to sign multi-year deal while Diggs could ink a one-year prove-it contract to cash one last time in 2026.

If the Texans were to miss out on Diggs, other options available include New York Giants’ Darius Slayton (No. 36), Chicago’s Keenan Allen (No. 49) and Kansas City’s Hollywood Brown.

Houston also has been linked to several receivers in the upcoming NFL draft, including Missouri’s Luther Burden III, Texas’ Matthew Golden and Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka.

Texans Wire OC candidates: Making the case for Syracuse OC Jeff Nixon

Jeff Nixon just led Syracuse to the top passing attack in college football and might be the favorite to replace Bobby Slowik with the Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are looking for a new man to lead the offense following the firing of offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik Friday afternoon.

Fresh off back-to-back AFC South division titles, Houston remains a prime location for any play-caller to flourish. The Texans have the quarterback in C.J. Stroud. They also have weapons, with Pro Bowlers Nico Collins and Joe Mixon back for 2025.

The Texans are expected to make a run at several offensive pieces in free agency and the draft, thus bolstering the personnel heading into 2025. And until plans change in Indianapolis, Tennessee, or Jacksonville, Houston remains the favorite to win the division entering next fall.

So, who are the top candidates?

Texans Wire will analyze a candidate each day until the hiring process concludes. Today, we begin with the individual that most fans wish will depart and move to Houston.

First, let’s discuss the guy the Texans just interviewed: Syracuse’s Jeff Nixon.

Background

Current position: Syracuse offensive coordinator

Previous coaching experience: New York Giants running backs coach (2023), Carolina Panthers running backs coach/interim offensive coordinator (2020-22), Baylor offensive coordinator (20017-19), San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach (2016), Miami Dolphins running backs coach (2011-15), Philadelphia Eagles assistant coach (2007-10)

Interview: Monday, Jan. 27, 2025

Pros

Nixon’s offense made a splash in the ACC this past season under first-year head coach Fran Brown. While most expected the run game to be a focal point of the Orange’s success, it was the high-tempo passing performance that excelled the ACC club to a record-setting campaign.

As the primary play-caller, Nixon’s personnel was the nation’s No. 1 passing offense, averaging 370 yards per game. Former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord led the NCAA in passing yards (4,799) and passing attempts (592).

The senior also broke former Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson’s single-season ACC passing record at Clemson set in 2016 while leading SU to its first 10-win season since 2018.

Running back LeQuint Allen also led the NCAA in catches for running backs (64) and had over 1,500 scrimmage yards. Allen also averaged 4.5 yards per attempt and scored 16 rushing touchdowns in 12 games.

If the Texans want to be a more up-tempo offense in 2025, Nixon should remain in the running. According to The Houston Chronicle’s Sam Warren, SU primarily lived in short passing attacks.

Nearly half of McCord’s pass attempts were between 0-9 yards, while his release time of 2.4 seconds was the fifth-fastest among FBS passers. Stroud’s 2.97 seconds was the NFL’s ninth-fastest. The former No. 2 overall pick also loves to attack the middle of the field, as evident by his connections with Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz in 2023.

Houston ranked 24th in explosive plays last season behind Slowik’s offense. Nixon’s unit was one of the best. McCord ranked second nationally on passes of 20+ air yards, completing 53% of his throws for nine touchdowns against three turnovers.

Unlike Stroud, McCord’s system allowed him to thrive under pressure. According to Warren,  McCord’s 26.9% was the fifth-highest in the country. Stroud was pressured 39.4% on dropbacks.

The system will differ from Slowik’s design, but it’s meant to help move the chains promptly. Nixon emphasizes production and consistency as the root of the offensive approach. It works in all three stages of the field and eliminates one option as the go-to force in the passing game.

Cons

Nixon’s limited time as a play-caller in the pros did not go as planned. After Matt Rhule was fired in 2022, he took over as the interim offensive coordinator and struggled to build momentum.

Credit, Nixon was working with an aging Cam Newton who had lost the ability to throw and a lackluster run game that traded away Christian McCaffery, so the designs were one-dimensional. But after the season concluded, he never received an interview for an opening to call plays in the offseason.

All of Nixon’s success running an offense has come at the college level. Will it translate to the pros? It’s a concern since any more regression could stall the growth of Stroud as he enters Year 3.

Syracuse also featured a five-tool passing attack, with four players hauling at least 50 passes. Five totaled over 500 yards and three found the end zone eight-plus times.

Is that sustainable for the current offensive status? Collins is back as the top receiver. Mixon returns in the backfield. Everyone else is up for grabs, including free agents Robert Woods and Stefon Diggs on the market.

Final Verdict

Initially, fans seemed frustrated at the interview, but the more you dive into the Xs and Os, Nixon is a solid option. Areas of weakness for Stroud last season were positions for strength for McCord, who served as Stroud’s backup at Ohio State for two seasons.

NFL experience plus time a play-caller crosses off two immediate boxes that have concerned fans. A background in the running back likely adds to Nixon’s case since the run game was an arid weakness before Mixon’s arrival.

Then again, Stroud is the selling point, so having experience as a quarterbacks coach might be a prerequisite.

The Texans must comply with the Rooney Rule and interview two minority candidates. Could Nixon just fit a quota? Perhaps, but the more you dive into his personnel packages, the more you like him.

Houston fans might not be on board with the move based on name alone, but appearances can be deceiving. It’s not the slam dunk hire based on name, yet it could be why Stroud returns to All-Pro form.

But other names still exist. Let’s play it safe and say Nixon has a hair’s chance to stand on the sidelines at NRG Stadium come Week 1.

Chances of hiring: 15%

NFL insider reveals what Texans are looking for in their next OC

There’s one key factor that must be addressed with the new offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans this offseason.

What are the Houston Texans looking for in their next offensive coordinator?

Previous play-calling experience?

An identity in the passing attack?

Consistency in setting up protection?

While all are areas that must be corrected by the new man taking over for Bobby Slowik, NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo said there’s one defining trait that must stand out with the next play-caller.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud’s relationship will be the selling point.

“Look for this offensive coordinator search to be about a pair with C.J. Stroud and a way to make Stroud comfortable,” Garafalo said.

Stroud is the foundation of the Texans moving into 2025. After a breakout rookie season, a sophomore slump ensued that resulted in people pondering on the two-time Heisman finalist’s potential entering Year 3.

As a rookie, Stroud led the NFL in touchdown-to-interception and became the fifth first-year player to total 4,000 passing yards. A year later, he tossed three fewer touchdowns, seven more interceptions and finished outside the top 10 in passing yards.

Garafalo confirmed that quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson would be a candidate for the opening, especially given his relationship with Stroud. The two first met when Stroud was in high school at the Elite 11 camp.

Both have grown since his day at Rancho Cucamonga High School. If he impresses, Johnson could be named OC as soon as this week.

He won’t be the only one up for the highly-touted job. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans knows that after making it to the divisional round back-to-back seasons, someone has to elevate the roster to compete for a conference title.

While Johnson is the favorite internal candidate, other names on watch for include Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nick Caley, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown.

Texans land homegrown WR talent, Stefon Diggs replacement in PFF Mock Draft

The Houston Texans could bring back a former Cougar following a one-year stay in Austin.

If Stefon Diggs leaves in free agency, wide receiver depth moves up the pecking order for the Houston Texans’ offeseason needs.

As the Texans plan to enter the offseason, Diggs remains the top internal free agent who could return in 2025. After being limited to eight games following a torn ACL, a reunion could be in the work on a one-year deal to better his market in 2026.

But even if the Texans were to reach a deal with the four-time Pro Bowler, they need stability past 2025. Tank Dell, who was expected to be the long-term No. 2 behind Nico Collins, suffered another season-ending injury, putting his status in jeopardy for the next year’s run to the postseason.

It’s why Pro Football Focus has Houston solidifying its receiving corp at pick No. 25 with the addition of Texas receiver Matthew Golden. After a breakout season in Austin, the former Houston Cougar has the upside as a talented No. 2 target in any offensive system.

Stefon Diggs’ impending free agency and Tank Dell‘s likely lengthy absence due to another serious leg injury should have the Texans looking to add a receiver to complement Nico Collins. Golden was a breakout player for the Longhorns this year, as his PFF receiving grade against single coverage and zone coverage were both in the 90th percentile for FBS wide receivers.

Following the firing of Dana Holgerson, Golden elected to enter the transfer portal. By the midway point of his first year with the Longhorns, he had become the go-to target for Quinn Ewers en route to a College Football Playoff bid and a 13-3 season.

The Houston native finished with career-highs in catches (58), receiving yards (987) yards per catch (17.0) and touchdowns (9). He also stepped up in the biggest games for Texas last season, totaling 162 yards and a touchdown in the SEC Championship and catching a game-tying 28-yard touchdown pass in overtime against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl to go along with 149 yards.

The Texans also have an infatuation with targeting local products in the draft in the past. Offensive lineman Kenyon Green,  defensive back Jalen Pitre, and defensive Dylan Horton all grew up in Houston, while Dell played at Houston for three seasons and posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

If the Texans can shore up their offensive line woes in free agency, Golden would be a gold addition to the passing game.

Texans sign 11 players to reserve/future deals entering 2025 offseason

The Houston Texans have inked deals with 11 players heading into the offseason.

The Houston Texans will have at least 11 players back in 2025 as part of their 90-man roster.

Following their 23-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston inked deals with multiple players on a reserve/futures contract. This means they’ll have a spot on the staff for offseason workouts, OTAs and potentially training camp.

Here’s a list of all 11 players below.

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. G 6-2 314 26 3 Clemson
Anthony Averett CB 5-11 185 30 6 Alabama
Solomon Byrd DE 6-3 250 25 R USC
Johnny Johnson III WR 6-1 199 25 1 Oregon
Xavier Johnson WR 6-1 210 25 R Ohio State
Jawhar Jordan RB 5-10 185 25 R Louisville
Gregory Junior CB 6-0 190 25 3 Ouachita Baptist
Jayden Peevy DT 6-5 308 25 1 Texas A&M
Kedon Slovis QB 6-2 223 23 R BYU
J.J. Taylor RB 5-6 185 27 3 Arizona
Russ Yeast S 5-10 195 25 3 Kansas State

The Texans finished the season with an 11-8 overall record after winning the AFC South for the second consecutive year. Houston will select 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Texans slot in the 2025 NFL Draft is now set

The Houston Texans know when they’ll be on the clock in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Houston Texans are on the clock.

Well, not yet, but at least they know their draft positioning entering April 25 in Green Bay.

Following a 24-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium, the Texans will select 25th overall in the 2025 draft. At 10-7, Houston had the worst record of any team remaining team, cementing the franchise with the lowest pick remaining.

Multiple positions could be in play ahead of free agency, but trench play has to be at the top of the list on both sides. Houston plans on upgrading one of the guard spots this offseason. The same goes for defensive tackle.

With Stefon Diggs set to hit free agency and Tank Dell out for most of next season, adding a wide receiver isn’t the worst option in the first round. And Houston could benefit from adding a long-term running mate with rookie Calen Bullock at safety.

The current pick is subject to trades, of course. Texans GM Nick Caserio has been a very aggressive dealmaker in the past, moving up nine spots in 2023 to select Will Anderson Jr. at the No. 3 overall following the selection of C.J. Stroud.

Last season, Caserio traded the first-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for two second-round picks and a future fifth-round pick, which was used in the trade for Diggs from Buffalo.

Texans lean heavy on offense in latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft

Tyler Booker, Xavier Restrepo and Devin Neal are all names Houston Texans fans should remember heading into draft season.

Alabama offensive lineman Tyler Booker has been a popular pick for the Houston Texans in the first round of mock drafts.

Expect to see his name more as the season dwindles week by week.

In the latest seven-round mock draft from Pro Football Network, the Texans shore up the left guard position with the selection of the Alabama All-American at pick No. 25.

After allowing the third-most sacks this season, everything is about protecting C.J. Stroud for 2025 and beyond. Booker, who allowed two sacks in three seasons, should be a plug-and-play upgrade over the current names on Houston’s roster.

“Booker transformed his body heading into 2024 and his game took the necessary steps along with it,” PFN’s Dalton Miller said. “He’s always played with the requisite violence and natural anchoring ability of a high-end guard, but his body composition aided his athleticism. He’s become a legitimately dominant left guard.”

The Texans have several options at right guard. Shaq Mason could be a cap casualty and cut before the start of free agency. Tytus Howard, who recently shifted over to left guard, could move to the right side if the Texans can rework his contract.

Rookie tackle Blake Fisher also could shift inside should the Texans land a premier right tackle in free agency. Left guard, however, needs a stable option next to five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil.

“If anybody watched the Texans… (ever???) they’d see that left guard for the Houston Texans might be the most obvious team need in the league,” Miller wrote.

PFN also elected to better the Texans’ receiving corps with Tank Dell expected to miss a majority of the regular season and Stefon Diggs hitting free agency. In the second round, Houston secures a new long-term slot receiver in Miami’s Xavier Restrepo.

“Injuries piled onto the Texans’ WR corps in 2024, and although Tank Dell is an undersized player, he played most of his snaps on the outside for Houston,” Miller wrote. “Restrepo is also “undersized,” but at 190 pounds and with the heart of a lion, the Hurricanes’ WR thrives on physicality as a blocker and pass catcher.

His shifty and manipulative route running will make him a dangerous third-down weapon, but he was also a downfield playmaker for Miami. His ability to freestyle when Ward was running around in the backfield makes him a quarterback’s best friend when the pocket collapses, and he adds value as a blocker in the run game.”

To round out the mock draft, PFN paired Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon with Kansas’ Devin Neal in Round 3. On Day 3, Houston added TCU wide receiver Jack Bech, USC cornerback Jaylon Smith and Georgia defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse,

Houston currently owns six picks in the upcoming draft after trading away a 2025 second-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for Diggs last offseason.

Texans build up offensive line in latest ESPN mock draft

In the latest mock draft from ESPN, the Houston Texans shore up their offensive line with the selection of an All-Confernce stud.

If C.J. Stroud plans to stay upright in 2025, the Houston Texans need an All-American guard to pair alongside five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil.

Consider that mission accomplished based on one mock draft to start the new year.

Jordan Reid’s latest 2025 NFL mock draft from ESPN has the Texans shoring up their trenches with the selection of Arizona offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea with the 20th overall pick in the first round.

Houston’s draft plan is simple on Day 1 entering the wild-card round of the playoffstake the best lineman available and worry about the rest later.

C.J. Stroud had a bit of a sophomore slump, and poor play from the Texans’ O-line was a contributing factor. Houston tied for the third-most pass-blocking losses in the league (210) and wasn’t much better in the run game, as its guards’ 66.4% run block win rate was the fifth worst in the NFL.

The 6-foot-5, 336-pound Savaiinaea is a stoutly built blocker who plays with a sturdy base and has powerful hands. He allowed only one sack this season and can play tackle and guard, though he projects best inside in the NFL.

While the Texans could pivot toward the defensive line, their inability to secure a long-term left guard makes the selection of Savaiinaea intriguing. The massive junior comes from an offense built on a ground game emphasis under both Jedd Fisch and Brent Brennan.

Is it the sexiest pick in a draft filled with defensive studs? Not at all. Most fans are hoping with Tank Dell’s injury woes that Houston will take a pass-catcher to build up Stroud’s production.

But finesse only works when physicality is evident. The Texans must fix their power up the middle if expectations are for Stroud to connect with his targets in 2025.

The former Wildcat also offers position flexibility at four different roles on the line.

The Texans look to extend this season, thus pushing down their draft stock, on Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC wild-card round.

Kickoff from NRG Stadium is scheduled for 3;30 p.m. CT.
