3 trade targets for the Nets heading into the NBA trade deadline

Here are three players for the Brooklyn Nets to go after as the 2023-24 NBA trade deadline approaches.

The trade deadline for the 2023-24 NBA season is Feb. 8 and with that date less than one month away, the pressure is starting to mount on some teams to make moves. For teams like the Brooklyn Nets, that deadline represents how much time they have to make a choice on their future given where the season is heading.

The Nets have won just four of its last 16 games and while two of those wins were against the Phoenix Suns and the Oklahoma City thunder, those victories seem like outliers. The other two victories were against the lowly Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn made those wins seems too close for comfort until the end.

The Nets have some major holes on the team as they have been worse on defense than expected and their offense is starting to falter now that the threes aren’t falling. Here are three players for Brooklyn to go after with the trade deadline approaching:

On this day: Red passes; KC Jones coach, Hudson, Rozier, Mickey, R. Morgan, Cook player debuts; Nelson signed

On this day, legendary Boston Celtics team president and coach Red Auerbach passed away in 2006.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, legendary Celtics team president and coach Arnold “Red” Auerbach passed away at the age of 89 in 2006. Auerbach assembled a career in basketball unparalleled in its time and to this day, winning nine titles with the team as a coach, and seven more as an executive.

He joined the franchise in 1950 after stints coaching the Washington Capitols (now defunct) in the Basketball Association of America (BAA – a precursor league to the NBA) and at the NCAA level as an assistant coach with the Duke Blue Devils before joining the Celtics.

Red — as he was often called — transformed the game with his emphasis on the fast break and team-focused play reliant on ball movement at all positions.

Who are the Boston Celtics’ top-10 all-time leaders in postseason 3-pointers?

Can you name the Boston Celtics’ most prolific postseason 3-point shooters? Better yet, can you do it in order?

The 3-point shot has become the centerpiece of the modern NBA offense in both the regular season and playoffs, but much of the Boston Celtics’ storied postseason success took place before the adoption of the 3 by the NBA — never mind its ascent to dominance.

And while Larry Bird might have started his career in the very same game a 3 was first recorded, even the Hick From French Lick did not rely much on the shot. So the record book of which Celtics have sunk the most shots from beyond the arc is heavily slanted toward the modern era, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few surprises mixed in.

Can you guess the 10 most prolific 3-point shooters in Boston’s playoff history? Make your guesses and scroll down to see how you did.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 12

Today’s installment focuses on the 34 players who wore No. 12 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 34 players who wore No. 12 over the years as of September 2023.

On this day: Reggie Lewis dies; Brown, Rozier, Green, Crowder signed

On this day, former Celtics forward Reggie Lewis died unexpectedly while working out due to a heart arrhythmia.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, rising franchise star Reggie Lewis would die unexpectedly after collapsing on a basketball court at Brandeis University while working out in the offseason in 1993.

Lewis, who had previously been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat after another on-court collapse during the prior season, passed away after attempts by local police to resuscitate the Northeastern product were not successful. The 22nd overall pick of the 1987 NBA draft for the Celtics, Lewis was widely seen as a critical part of Boston’s future, and the bridge to a successful future after the Larry Bird – Kevin McHale – Robert Parish era.

Along with the loss of forward Len Bias in 1986, this was a major contributing cause to the team’s ‘wilderness era’ of mediocrity that would last more than a decade.

On this day: Rozier, Billups, Mercer, Kreklow, Hunter, Mickey drafted

On this day, the Boston Celtics drafted several players in multiple drafts, including Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, Ron Mercer, and Wayne Kreklow.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise took just one player of note in the 1979 NBA draft, held in New York City at the Plaza Hotel, after having traded away their first-round draft pick. The sole player selected by the Celtics that year was 6-foot-4 shooting guard Wayne Kreklow, taken with the 53rd overall pick in the draft’s third round (drafts went on much longer then than they do today).

A native of Neenah, Wisconsin, Kreklow had been playing college ball at Drake before being drafted by Boston. He did not initially make the team, not unusual for a prospect drafted so late. But, instead of being waived, he would play a season with the Maine Lumberjacks of the Continental Basketball Association (the equivalent of the G League in that era), where he averaged 9.6 points per game.

Kreklow would join the team for the 1980-81 season, helping to win a championship in a reserve role that saw him average 1.2 points over 25 games with the Celtics in his sole season with the franchise.

7 targets (Fred VanVleet!) who can replace Chris Paul as the Suns look for their new point guard

Here is why some of these options do (and do not!) make sense.

The uncomfortable truth: Chris Paul may be over as a serviceable guard who can provide positive value on the court for a contender.

After he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, Paul helped turn the organization into one of the best teams in the league. But he is averaging a career-low 13.9 points per game and he has struggled to stay healthy enough to remain on the floor for prolonged periods.

As such, according to league insider Marc Stein, the “word is” that this has caused the Suns to “start assessing” what their future looks like once he is no longer their point guard.

With that in mind, here are seven of the potential trade targets that Phoenix may pursue at the deadline as they consider long-term replacements for CP3.

On this day: Celtics Danny Ainge, Terry Rozier born; Bob Cousy retired

On this day in Celtics history, Danny Ainge and Terry Rozier were born, and Bob Cousy retired.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team has typically had St. Patrick’s Day off more often than not over the last decade, which is probably fitting given the ties of the team to Boston’s Irish-American community.

But they’ve also had three impressive wins on that day since the start of the “Big Three” era of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen, two of which belong to the iterations of the Celtics with that trio on the roster. The most recent such win, in 2017 against the Brooklyn Nets, saw a young Celtics roster emerging from a rebuild secure a tight game with a huge game from forward Jae Crowder.

The Marquette product scored 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with 12 rebounds to lead all scorers 9 of his total coming in the final frame alone. Crowder led Boston to a 98  5 win despite point guard Isaiah Thomas resting for knee soreness, the Georgian stepping up in his absence.

Former Celtic Terry Rozier jumps into the lottery in 2015 NBA redraft

‘A solid peak earlier in his career is what earned Terry Rozier his place in this re-draft,’ begins Scary Terry’s analysis.

“Scary” Terry Rozier did the Boston Celtics a solid as part of the deal that helped the club replace the void left by Kyrie Irving in free agency, which also lost them the player they drafted at No. 16 overall in the 2015 NBA draft. It was time for the onetime Louisville player to spread his wings, and he went on to carve a larger role with the Charlotte Hornets in the sign-and-trade.

Now, in a Hoops Hype redraft of the 2015 class put together by Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon, Rozier clocks in a full seven slots higher.

“A solid peak earlier in his career is what earned Terry Rozier his place in this re-draft, as nothing he has done over recent seasons warrants a Top 10 pick,” writes Hoops Hype in damningly faint praise.

“Rozier can score and create some but is too selfish of a player and not efficient enough to warrant his confidence on the basketball court.”

While that point of view might sting, it’s not entirely unwarranted, either.

And even if it might have bruised the ego of our beloved Scary Terry, we also think he wouldn’t have minded the pay raise that came with being a lottery pick.

Lakers targeting several players ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline

After missing out on Kyrie Irving, the Lakers are doing their due diligence on a potential trade as the NBA’s deadline approaches.

Now that trading for Kyrie Irving is off the table after all these months, the Los Angeles Lakers can finally move forward with the monumental task of upgrading a somewhat talented but porous roster with less than 72 hours before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

They badly need accurate 3-point shooting, and given their recent struggles on the defensive end, they could use some help in that department as well.

If they do make a deal, what type of deal will it be? Will they go for a true big man, a big wing, a small wing or a ball-handling guard?

The Los Angeles Times’ Dan Woike reported the team has several specific players it could be looking to acquire.

Via Los Angeles Times:

“Toronto guards Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr., Atlanta guard Bogdan Bogdanovic, Detroit forward Bojan Bogdanovic (who the Pistons repeatedly have said isn’t available unless they’re blown away by an offer), Charlotte guard Terry Rozier and Utah guard Mike Conley all are viewed as possible trade targets depending on how the market shakes out between now and Thursday.”

None of these players would be ideal additions, although a few could significantly move the needle for L.A.

Both men named Bogdanovic would represent an upgrade in 3-point shooting, even if they wouldn’t add much of anything on the defensive end. Bojan Bogdanovic, in particular, would be a massive improvement in the outside shooting department while giving the team a legitimate third scoring option.

Rozier and VanVleet have been potent guards for the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors, respectively, but their shooting percentages are way down this season, which means they could actually hurt the Lakers in terms of 3-point accuracy.

Conley, who is 35 years of age, appears to be in decline, and his 3-point shooting accuracy has decreased this season.

Trent could be a very nice acquisition for the Lakers, however, as he has a reputation for being a legit 3-and-D player. At 6-foot-5 and 209 pounds, he can play the 3 at times, and he is shooting a respectable 37.3% from downtown on 7.1 attempts a game this year.
