On this day: Gamble, Hamer, Stump born; Mariaschin, Ehlers debut; Duerod passes

On this day in Celtics history, Kevin Gamble, Steve Hamer, and Gene Stump were born, Saul Mariaschin debuted, and Terry Duerod left us.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, small forward Kevin Douglas Gamble was born in Springfield, Illinois in 1965. A product of the University of Iowa, Gamble was drafted 63rd overall (there were many more rounds to the draft in that era) in the 1987 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.

He would play for that team briefly before spending time playing for teams in the Continental Basketball Association (an analog to today’s G League), the Philippine Basketball Association, and the World Basketball League. In December of 1988, Gamble got picked up by the Celtics to help cover for an injured Larry Bird and managed to parlay the opportunity into increasingly important roles, eventually becoming a starter by the 1990-91 season.

He would play for Boston for a total of six seasons, averaging 11.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while with the team.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 40

Today’s installment focuses on the 11 players who wore No. 40 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 11 players who wore No. 40 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

On this day: Bremer, Šundov traded, Wedman, Duerod, Hertzberg born

On this day, the Celtics traded point guard J.R. Bremer to the Cavaliers with big man Bruno Šundov for forward Jumaine Jones.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former point guard J.R. Bremer was traded along with big man Bruno Šundov and draft assets to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for small forward Jumaine Jones.

The Cleveland Heights (Ohio) native had signed with the Celtics as a 6-foot-2, 185 lb. free agent in the summer of 2002 after going undrafted out of St. Bonaventure University in the NBA draft of that year. Despite his lack of draft interest that summer, Bremer managed to make All-Rookie Second Team for his inaugural season in the Association, elevating his stock enough to make himself a trade asset for Boston.

Bremer averaged 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in his time with the Celtics.

Celtic champion wing Terry Duerod passes away after battle with cancer

Former Boston Celtic champion wing Terry Duerod passed away Friday after a long fight with leukemia. He was 64.

Former Boston Celtics champion shooting guard and small forward Terry Duerod has passed away after a long fight with leukemia, per the Detroit News’ Tony Paul.

Duerod, who was known for his shooting in an era that did not especially value away-from-the-basket offense as it is now, played for Boston for just 53 games across two seasons between 1980 and 1982, winning a title with the team in 1981.

A native of Royal Oak, Michigan, Duerod attended his hometown University of Detroit Mercy to play collegiate basketball, where he would play for the Titans under NBA and NCAA basketball legend Dick Vitale.

The former Celtic was drafted by the Detroit Pistons after college, playing one more season with a hometown team before he would be taken by the newly-formed Dallas Mavericks in the 1980 NBA expansion draft.

Duerod would also play for the Golden State Warriors before leaving the league for good in 1983, after which he carved out a nearly three-decade long career as a firefighter in his beloved city of Detroit.
