Will Texas A&M’s Terry Bussey stay at wide receiver in 2025?

Could Terry Bussey make the switch to cornerback? it isn’t very likely after landing former Georgia CB Julian Humphrey

Texas A&M’s cornerback room looks solidified after the Sunday morning addition of former Georgia cornerback Julian Humphrey, who announced his intentions after his weekend visit to College Station.

Starting ten games during his final season with the Bulldogs, Humphrey finished with ten tackles and four pass deflections while earning the second-highest coverage grade on the team (69) per Pro Football Focus.

Joining senior outside corner Will Lee III, Humphrey is a shoo-in to start in rotate in opposite Lee, as the Aggie cornerback room looks the best it has in years. This also directly impacted former five-star athlete Terry Bussey, who played most of his 2024 snaps as a wide receiver.

Bussey’s recruitment was very similar to that of Heisman-winning WR/CB Travis Hunter. While both players are different, Bussey is talented enough to switch to cornerback full-time while still taking snaps at wide receiver.

However, with Julian Humphrey’s commitment, Coach Mike Elko and OC Collin Klein likely view Bussey as a slot wide receiver with plenty of upside in screens and mesh concepts to consistently pick up third downs and open up the deep passing game. Bussey finished the season with 13 receptions for 179 yards, including 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

We won’t understand the coaching staff’s strategy for Bussey’s future until the 2025 spring season. However, if Elko views Bussey as a dual-threat player similar to Travis Hunter, it’s time to experiment next season.

Texas A&M vs. LSU injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 9 matchup

All the latest updates and news on Texas A&M’s injury report ahead of facing LSU on Saturday night

Texas A&M (6-1, 4-0 SEC) is still atop the SEC standings after defeating Mississippi State 34-24 in Starkville (MS) in Week 8, as the Aggie’s six-game win streak is highly impressive on its face.

However, many issues, especially on offense, remain ahead of facing 8th-ranked LSU for a primetime showdown on Saturday night. After throwing two interceptions against the Bulldogs, starting quarterback Conner Weigman didn’t look sharp despite receiving clean pockets from the offensive line, but did make several impressive throws when the offense needed a play.

Defensively, the Aggie secondary struggled in the first half against Mississippi State QB Michael Van Buren but adjusted in the second half, paired with Texas A&M’s pass rush getting home for three sacks.

Weigman and the secondary need to vastly improve before facing LSU’s offense behind starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and freshman running back Caden Durham. On Monday, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko provided a brief update regarding the team’s injury report ahead of the game.

Texas A&M (5-1, 3-0 SEC) has arrived in Starkville (MS) to face Mississippi State (1-5, 0-3 SEC) in a Saturday afternoon showdown. The two programs are on opposite ends of the spectrum, as the Aggies are in first place in the SEC, while the Bulldogs are winless with just one win over Eastern Kentucky.

This week, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has been adamant that he and his team aren’t taking the Bulldogs lightly despite their dismal record. Freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren is coming off a 306-yard passing performance with three touchdowns through the air in last Saturday’s road loss to Georgia.

While Texas A&M’s secondary needs to keep Mississippi State’s passing game at bay, the Aggie offense led by quarterback Conner Weigman and running back Le’Veon Moss needs to produce every quarter. Ahead of Texas A&M’s (5-1, 3-0 SEC) Week 8 road test against Mississippi State (1-5, 0-3 SEC) on Saturday afternoon, the second SEC-mandated availability report made its way to the public on Thursday night, as some change on the Aggies side is good new for the offense.

Early on Wednesday, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko further confirmed that starting quarterback Conner Weigman is healthy and back to full strength after his first start in nearly a month in the win against Missouri. Along the offensive line, starting center TJ Shanahan is healthy and ready to return to the lineup for the first time in the last two games.

However, freshman wide receiver Terry Bussey was listed as questioniable on Wednesday, giving him a 50% chance to play against the Bulldogs, but within Thursday’s report, Bussey is now probable, giving him a 75% chance to suit up for the matchup. Texas A&M HC Mike Elko, OC Collin Klein praise WR Terry Bussey’s maturity

Texas A&M WR Terry Bussey is starting to figure things out, which is great news for the Aggie passing game

Texas A&M is atop the SEC standings at 5-1 and 3-0 in conference play. On Saturday afternoon, the Aggies destroyed the then-9th-ranked Missouri Tigers 41-10, and they Are entering their first of two bye weeks this season.

Focused on rest, lifting, and film study this week, Aggies head coach Mike Elko and OC Collin Klein spoke on Monday to recap the win while pointing out the progress freshman wide receiver Terry Bussey has made this season after leading the Aggies in receiving yards against the Tigers.

Despite his age, Bussey, the No. 1-ranked athlete in the 2024 recruiting class, is one of the more explosive receiving options on the roster. However, after initially deeming him a quarterback due to his elite versatility at three positions during his prolific high school career, Bussey’s route running, speed, and soft hands were too impressive not to be involved in the offense this season.

After recording 3 receptions for 76 yards, including a 33-yard catch and run, Bussey’s best play came as a defender after a risky throw by quarterback Conner Weigman nearly threw an interception, which was batted away by the freshman whose understanding of the corner position came into play.

On Monday, Elko was asked about Bussey’s instincts on the near interception and why he wasn’t surprised by the freshman’s instincts to break up the play.

“I thought it was a great play. Obviously, it was critical. … If Terry doesn’t do that, it’s a very clear pick.”

“He’s growing every day into a technically sound football player. … Every time he goes out there, he’s becoming a better and better technically sound football player. He knows that. It’s great finding more and more ways to give him the ball.”

“Technically sound” is a term used when describing veteran players with vast experience and an understanding of the game, as OC Collin Klein furthered the coaching staff’s praise of how well Bussey is adjusting to the offense.

He’s an incredible young man from top to bottom. His level of maturity is impressive.”

“Obviously, he has a great skillset. … To watch his maturation as a route runner and how he has improved has been really fun to watch.”

If Bussey and the passing game led by QB Conner Weigman find continuity in the second half of the season, starting with another SEC road test against Mississippi State on October 19th, Texas A&M’s offense will be one of the toughest units to stop for the rest of the schedule.

Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman is confident in his receiving options ahead of facing Florida

Ahead of traveling to take on the Florida Gators, starting quarterback Conner Weigman is confident in his receiving corps

Texas A&M (1-1) will face the Florida Gators (1-1) in Gainsville on Saturday afternoon. The first SEC road matchup looks like a critical game on paper for both programs.

Taking center stage, starting quarterback Conner Weigman showed some improvement during the Aggies’ 52-10 win over McNeese State. His footwork issues led to a career-low performance against Notre Dame the week prior.

Although Weigman only lasted two quarters due to the score, his accuracy and overall confidence led to five consecutive scoring drives. The redshirt sophomore knows this is just the beginning of his 2024 journey, but he’ll need help from his wide receiver corps.

Earlier this week, I examined A&M’s wide receiver room after the win, noting that even against an FCS opponent, the receivers who took the field failed to consistently gain separation in their routes, which is now becoming a constant issue.

It’s not for lack of talent; La Tech WR Cyrus Allen leads the team with 100 receiving yards, but that primarily game against McNeese after recording 75 yards. Still, Weigman noted during Monday’s press conference that utilizing each receiver’s skillset is key to finding a balanced offensive attack.

“I think we had 10, 11, 12 guys receivers-wise. Being able to spread the ball helps… They have different skillsets.”

However, to take the top off the defense, utilizing the most athletic receiver early and often will open up the passing game underneath, leading to what should be an increase in snaps for senior WR Moose Muhammad and freshman Terry Bussey, who might be the twitchiest route runner on the roster despite his inexperience.

Like most quarterbacks, Weigman is determined to control the offense no matter the situation. Combined with an improved run game, the passing game will slowly but surely improve, especially if he continues to use his legs when warranted.

“I would have played the whole game if they had let me. We scored every drive.”

“That’s what I tell my guys. Every time we touch the ball, points, points, points.”

Texas A&M will travel to Gainsville to take on the Florida Gators on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ABC.

Watch Texas A&M freshman Terry Bussey score his first collegiate touchdown

Freshman athlete Terry Bussey breezed by the defense for his first career touchdown

Texas A&M star freshman wide receiver/cornerback Terry Bussey, who also serves as the team’s primary punt and kick returner, scored his first touchdown with the program in the fourth quarter of the Aggies’ week 2 home matchup vs. McNeese State.

Bussey, who was poised to receive more snaps on offense after only appearing 12 times during the opening season loss to Notre Dame, continued to see the field on several jet sweep attempts, with his final touch going to the house as the prolific high school player showed off his wheels for a 65-yard score.

Bussey’s high-profile recruiting prowess as a versatile athlete on offense and defense, possessing the skillset to play at both wide receiver and cornerback at the college level, will hopefully lead to more touches on both sides of the ball this season.

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko is impressed by ATH Terry Bussey’s continued progress

In an attempt to take the top of any defense, Terry Bussey could be that answer

In two days, Texas A&M will look to rebound against McNeese State after falling 23-13 in the 2024 season opener at the hands of Notre Dame, who broke through late in what was a defensive rock fight for all four quarters.

The Aggies’ poor offensive showing behind a career-low performance from starting quarterback Conner Weigman had many of us, especially the fan base, questioning this unit’s immediate future if improvement doesn’t occur sooner rather than later.

When examining the tape, Texas A&M’s wide receivers failed to gain separation throughout the game, except for junior WR Noah Thomas, who still only recorded one reception for ten yards. However, one former 5-star athlete could be the answer to taking the top of the defense more consistently.

“Terry (Bussey) is a talented kid. We’re getting him going at the best of our abilities.”

On Wednesday, head coach Mike Elko was asked about freshman cornerback/wide receiver Terry Bussey, the starting kick/punt returner, making his debut against Notre Dame during his weekly radio show.

Knowing his elite skillset, it’s all about mastering the fundamentals. Elko noted Bussey’s progression in that area this week, hinting at an uptick in snaps compared to his 12 at wide receiver against the Irish.

“Everything for Terry is transitioning from being a phenomenal athlete to being an extremely detailed football player.”

Details are everything, and it’s no surprise that Bussey receives more attention with eleven games remaining. Elko and OC Collin Klein are looking to diagnose the receiving issues, potentially opening the door for Bussey to develop into a Travis Hunter-like playmaker soon.

Texas A&M will host McNeese on Saturday, Sept. 7, for an early kickoff at 11:45 a.m. The game will air on the SEC Network.

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko provided an update on injured Aggie wide receiver

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko is optimistic that one of the Aggie’s receiving options could be back sooner than later.

Texas A&M’s 2024 season continues on Saturday. The Aggies will host McNeese State on Saturday afternoon, just a week after falling to Notre Dame 23-13 inside a packed Kyle Field.

This week, the emphasis is on offense. Starting quarterback Conner Weigman is determined to put his career-low performance behind him after throwing for just 100 yards and two interceptions. The redshirt sophomore noted that his feet were off while his emotions were high.

On the contrary, Texas A&M’s wide receiver rotation failed to gain separation consistently, leading to Weigman having to rush things mentally. However, OC Collin Klein needs to do a better job scheming receivers open.

On Wednesday, head coach Mike Elko revealed that former Troy wide receiver Jabre Barber is progressing in rehab and is “getting closer” to returning to the rotation sooner rather than later. Elko spoke to reporters during his weekly SEC Teleconference.

During his final season with Troy, Barber recorded 75 receptions, 999 yards, and five touchdowns. He possesses the quickness and versatility needed to contribute in the receiving game quickly this season.

Texas A&M will host McNeese on Saturday, Sept. 7, for an early kickoff at 11:45 a.m. The game will air on the SEC Network.
