Best post-trade deadline Boston Celtics wing buyout targets

Now that the dust has settled and it’s clear the Celtics are looking to add wing depth via a buyout signing, here are our favorite targets.

With the Boston Celtics trading for veteran Oklahoma City Thunder big man Mike Muscala in their sole move at the 2023 NBA trade deadline, the need to fortify the club’s frontcourt has diminished.

But if the team hopes to make the postseason with their star wings healthy and with fresh legs, adding another body off the buyout market to bolster the team’s wing depth ought to be Boston’s next priority.

While it is not yet clear whether the better candidates for what the Celtics are after will even be bought out at the time of writing, we have identified a handful of prospects Boston’s front office ought to be inquiring after.

Larger wings able to play more than one position should be the focus of any buyout signing, and the disabled player exception granted to the team after Danilo Gallinari’s injury gives Boston an edge as a contending squad.

Five Boston Celtics buyout candidates for the 2023 NBA postseason

With the $3.2 million disabled player exception available to be used to sign a player in the last year of his deal or a free agent, the Boston Celtics will be able to offer more salary than most other teams.

“Boston is going to pick off whoever they want on the buyout market,” said an anonymous source to Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith regarding the team’s plans for team building beyond the 2023 NBA trade deadline. “They have money and minutes. And they’re a title contender. That checks all the boxes.”

With the $3.2 million disabled player exception available to be used to sign a player in the last year of his deal or a free agent, the Boston Celtics will be able to offer more salary than most other teams, as well as being a contender with some real needs to be filled.

The league awaits potential buyout options that could hit the market soon that might be up the Celtics’ alley — let’s dive into some of the better options out there.

3 wing players Sixers should target before February trade deadline

Here are three wing players the Philadelphia 76ers should target before the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

The Philadelphia 76ers are likely to focus on smaller deals to shed salary before the Feb. 9 trade deadline. However, they still have their eyes on a title for the 2022-23 season. Therefore, they will likely look into deals to add depth to the roster.

The Sixers are loaded with talent, but adding one more wing who can play in the postseason would help the team’s overall depth. Especially, since James Harden and Tyrese Maxey have already missed significant time with injuries.

Three wing players who fit what the Sixers want to do come to mind:

Lakers interested in Orlando Magic wing Terrence Ross?

The Lakers have reportedly been interested in the Magic’s Terrence Ross in the past. Do they still consider him a potential trade target?

The Los Angeles Lakers need some help to have any chance of becoming a championship contender, especially now that Anthony Davis is expected to miss at least a month with a foot injury.

They mostly need help at both forward positions. Their only players there other than Davis and LeBron James are Troy Brown Jr., who has been mostly ineffective this season, Juan Toscano-Anderson, who is currently injured and hasn’t played much, and Wenyen Gabriel, who is a borderline rotation player purely because of energy and effort.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports indicated the Orlando Magic’s Terrence Ross could be a target for L.A. ahead of the trade deadline.

Via Yahoo Sports:

“There are certainly pieces for Orlando to move ahead of this season’s deadline, but the Magic won’t be gaining nearly the return they saw two years before.

“Terrence Ross has long garnered interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, sources said.”

Fischer noted that the price for Ross might be lower than it would’ve been in the past had Orlando moved him then, but that there could still be interest in him this time around.

Ross may be more gettable for the Lakers than some other players they’re reportedly interested in, but it’s hard to imagine him making any real impact. They badly need some 3-point snipers. Ross is shooting a respectable 36.6% from downtown this season, but he shot 29.2% last season and 33.7% the year prior.

In addition, he plays most of his minutes at the off-guard position, where L.A. has solid depth with Lonnie Walker IV and Austin Reaves. At 6-foot-6 and 206 pounds, Ross is somewhat undersized for the small forward position.

3 players who could be available by trade for Sixers in 2022-23 season

Here are three players who could be available for trade for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2022-23 season.

As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for the 2022-23 season, they have one of the best rosters in the league led by a star duo in the form of Joel Embiid and James Harden. Combine their abilities with rising star Tyrese Maxey as well as some really good additions to the roster and they are going to be in the mix for a title.

However, team president Daryl Morey is never shy to pull the trigger on a deal if he thinks it will improve the roster. In the middle of the upcoming season, there could be some solid additions available for the Sixers in a trade as possible options to add to the roster.

Here are three players who could be available and who would fit the roster:

5 trades Sixers can make to move Danny Green, No. 23 pick to help now

Here are 5 trades the Philadelphia 76ers can make to move Danny Green and the No. 23 pick that will help them right away.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the midst of trying to position themselves to make moves in the offseason to put the right pieces around Joel Embiid and James Harden in order to make them legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference.

In order to clear enough cap space to make the moves they want to make–see P.J. Tucker–they have to make a trade leading up to Thursday’s NBA draft which kicks off at 8 p.m. EST.

The Sixers have been known to have been aggressively shopping veteran Danny Green as well as the No. 23 pick they own in Thursday’s draft. They haven’t made a deal just yet, but with the help of cap specialist Yossi Gozlan, Sixers Wire has come up with five trades to move Green and the pick in order to find immediate help for the Sixers.

Note: In order for any of the following trades to work, any players mentioned with non-guaranteed salaries like Green, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Isaiah Joe would need to have their salaries guaranteed for these deals to work.

3 reasons Sixers should look into Terrence Ross in the offseason

The Philadelphia 76ers should look into making a move to get Terrence Ross this offseason as he can add a lot of value to the squad.

The Philadelphia 76ers struggled massively with 3-point shooting throughout the NBA playoffs, shooting just 37.3%. The only player who shot well, throughout the playoffs, was Danny Green at 40.8%. With floor spacing being at a premium, more shooting is needed to space the floor better and create more driving lanes for James Harden and Tyrese Maxey.

The Orlando Magic are rebuilding, and 10-year veteran Terrence Ross does not expect to be part of their long-term plans. Therefore, he should be available for a trade at the right price.

He had a tough year shooting from 3 (29.2%), but most of the season was a throwaway for the Magic, who were looking toward the future. A guy like Ross would provide a much-needed spark for the Sixers.

Here are three reasons the Sixers need to trade for the veteran out of Washington:

Celtics reportedly targeting Orlando’s Terrence Ross, possibly swapping for Dennis Schroder

Is Schroder potentially Florida-bound?

Could Dennis Schroder be about to become an Orlando Magic player? According to new reporting from The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn, that could well be the German point guard’s destination by the end of Thursday.

According to Washburn, “the club is working on a package to acquire Orlando swingman Terrence Ross, who has one more year left on his contract, with Dennis Schröder, another player and likely a draft pick headed to the Magic.” With Schroder unlikely to be able to be retained and an imperfect fit coming off the bench with this group of players with the Boston Celtics, just a move could make sense.

And while Ross is having an off season with the Magic from beyond the arc at just 30.8%, he has long shown he can help a team put paints on the board at a high rate in other ways as well.

If the ask were a small one — perhaps something like Schroder, a second-round pick, and Enes Kanter — it would seem an obvious plus for both teams.

5 non-star trade fits Sixers should target at the upcoming deadline

Here are five non-star trade targets the Philadelphia 76ers should look at for the upcoming deadline.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a roster they believe can contend for a title as Joel Embiid has propelled the team back toward the top of the East with his stellar play. His elite performances compel the Sixers to get the right piece to team with him and take advantage of what they have in front of them.

The Sixers are most likely not going to find that piece by the Feb. 10 deadline. There is now little chance, reportedly, the team moves Ben Simmons and brings in a star to put next to Embiid and push for a title. Philadelphia will likely have to wait for the offseason to do that, since that is the earliest a guy such as James Harden comes into play.

As for the 2021-22 season, there are some targets Philadelphia should look at to find fits with Embiid in deals that wouldn’t include Simmons:

Report: Terrence Ross regarded as a trade target for Lakers

Orlando Magic wing Terrence Ross is being viewed as a trade target for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers have holes throughout the roster, which is a reason the team is 23-24.

Los Angeles needs to upgrade this roster to have any chance of competing for a title in a few months, but the front office will need to make the right moves.

The Lakers have been linked to several names since trade rumors began swirling. One that could gain traction is Orlando Magic wing Terrence Ross, according to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein (paid subscription):

I passed along this update via Twitter on Sunday night purely because Orlando’s Terrence Ross and Gary Harris are names to monitor whenever they pop up these days. The Magic are widely expected to trade one or both before the Feb. 10 trade deadline depending on the level of draft capital they can get in return.

Some teams regard Ross as a natural target for the Lakers or the Jazz — both known to be seeking a defensive-minded wing player but possessing limited trade assets to make an impact trade in the next 17 days.

Ross is a theoretical 3-and-D player, though he’s not having a great shooting year with the worst team, by record, in the NBA. He’s hitting just 40.6% of his shots overall and 31% from deep. At 30 years old, he’s a career 36.4% shooter from 3-point range, but he’s more of a streaky scorer instead of a consistent spot-up or catch-and-shoot guy.

The 6-foot-6 wing is making $12.5 million this year and $11.5 million next year before becoming an unrestricted free agent. The Lakers would need to include Talen Horton-Tucker and a minimum contract to match salaries along with attaching draft picks.

The Lakers are probably better off looking elsewhere; Ross doesn’t appear to move the needle the way L.A. needs it to.
