Bills LB Terrel Bernard named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Bills LB Terrel Bernard named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Buffalo Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his team’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 12.

Bernard is the second player from Buffalo the win the DPOTW honor in as many games as cornerback Taron Johnson won it seven days ago.

In total, the Bills (9-2) have had six player win a weekly honor so far this season.

Bernard led the Bills with eight tackles, including one for loss.

More importantly, Bernard notched a sack on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and intercepted him. The latter takeaway was the final play of the game for Kansas City’s offense as Bernard iced the 30-21 win.

Bernard’s impact stood out even further considering he missed this team’s postseason loss to the Chiefs last season. .

In total, Buffalo has taken home six total “Player of the Week” honors so far in 2024. The team record for the Bills in a single season is eight.

Bernard’s pick can be found in the clip below:

Bills’ Terrel Bernard breaks down matchup vs. Chiefs’ Travis Kelce

The Bills beat the Chiefs 30-21 at home on Sunday.

The contest that saw the teams’ final scores roughly on average for the season so far also had significant takeaways on and off the field.

But the biggest one belonged to Buffalo linebacker, Terrel Bernard.

With 1:07 left to play in the fourth quarter, the Bills’ defensive captain and play caller took away a Patrick Mahomes pass intended for Kansas City tight end and MGMT “Electric Feel” fan Travis Kelce for an end-game interception.

The entire Buffalo defense ran down to celebrate with him in the end zone after getting in front of Kelce to grab the ball out of the air.

“The main thing is just having awareness of him, “ Bernard said about covering the Chiefs TE to WIVB. “Pre, post-snap, trying to get guys around him as much as possible, playing within our scheme and our system still but understanding he’s going to be one of the first options every pass play.”

It was the second interception for KC’s Mahomes, whose first and last throws in Sunday’s game were caught by Buffalo.

Bernard, who was out during the last meeting between the clubs in January’s divisional round of the playoffs, also had eight tackles and a sack on the day to go with the big-time turnover.

“I think having that awareness, [defensive coordinator] Bobby [Babich] did a great job in the gameplan, all the coaches did, putting him in our minds all week and knowing where he was at and where he was going to be, what he likes to do in certain spots. I think that was a huge factor, and everybody playing to the details of the defense.”

Everything has changed for Kelce since his last matchups against the Bills in which he seemed unstoppable.

He may just want to shake it off, knowing all too well that Bernard and the Bills defense held him to only two catches for eight yards receiving.

But with the win the Bills now have a better shot at a No. 1 seed and a first-round bye, the Chiefs do as well although they are not out of the woods yet.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was complimentary of the Bills when asked what his takeaways off the field were from the loss.

“Things you can learn, the main thing is that they’re a good team and, if you have a few mistakes in there, they can capitalize on them,” Reid said.

The teams could face off again in the postseason, and time will tell which club will play host to the other if they do.

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Seahawks in Week 8

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Seahawks in Week 8

The Buffalo Bills will play the Seattle Seahawks on the road in Week 8 at Lumen Field.

The Bills (5-2) are looking to build on a dominant second half in last week’s blowout win over the Tennessee Titans. The Seahawks (4-3) are coming off of a blowout win of their own as they beat the Atlanta Falcons by 20.

It’s a close matchup between two good football teams and Las Vegas agrees. The Bills are favored by a field goal on the road. They’ll need to execute their game plan to gain their sixth win of the year.

Here are three keys to a Bills win in Week 8:

Balanced offensive attack

Imagn Images

The Bills’ passing game finally got on track during the second half of last week’s win. Allen had his first 300-yard passing game since Week 18 of last year. But, Seattle has been giving up chunks on the ground.

They allow 146 rushing yards per game, which ranks fourth-worst in the NFL. This is the type of defense that you must keep guessing and the Bills should get their stable of running backs going.

Control the line of scrimmage on offense

Perhaps the best matchup to watch will be the Bills’ offensive line against Seattle’s defensive line. The Bills’ O-line ranks seventh in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus, but they will have their hands full.

The Seahawks have talent and depth across the line. They rank 13th in the NFL per PFF. Last week they sacked Kirk Cousins three times and hit him nine times as he threw two interceptions. They are capable of getting after the quarterback and making a difference. If the Bills minimize what the Seahawks can do up front, then it will open up a lot for the offense.

Play sound coverage

The Seahawks love to air it out on offense. They have the most passing yards in the league and they’ve attempted the most passes, too. Quarterback Geno Smith has attempted the most passes of 10-plus yards downfield among all QBs. The Bills will be tested in coverage.

Safeties Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin have a lot on their plate. If they can make a few plays on the ball and limit the deep passing, then it will bode well for the Bills in this one. What makes things difficult for the Bills is that linebacker Terrel Bernard won’t be there in the middle of the field.

Causes for concern as the Bills face the Seahawks in Week 8

Causes for concern as the Bills face the Seahawks in Week 8

The Buffalo Bills take to the road in Week 8 to face the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

The Bills (5-2) and Seahawks (4-3) clash as a couple of the better teams in the NFL through seven weeks.

The Bills are favored by just a field goal in the game, as the Seahawks have shown they can compete on both sides of the ball under first-year head coach Mike Macdonald.

Macdonald’s last two seasons were spent as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. The defensive-minded head coach also has an explosive offense led by veteran gunslinger Geno Smith. To improve to 6-2 on the year, the Bills will need to execute.

There are always a few things that make executing difficult each week, and the Bills will need to be wary of them. Here are three causes for concern for the Bills in Week 8:

Seattle’s air attack

USA TODAY Sports

The Seahawks pass the ball at the highest rate in the NFL. Not only does Geno Smith lead the league in attempts with 279, but he also leads the NFL in attempts of ten or more yards downfield.

Not having DK Metcalf due to his knee injury would hurt what the Seahawks can do downfield, but Smith will most likely still be willing to sling it. The secondary and linebackers for the Bills will be tested in coverage.

No Terrel Bernard

Getty Images

The Bills announced on Friday that linebacker and captain Terrel Bernard will miss the game at Seattle on Sunday. A big blow to the defense.

Any game that Terrel Bernard can’t play for the Bills is a concern, but this particular matchup especially hurts the Bills. The Seahawks love to throw it around the yard and Bernard is the best cover linebacker the Bills have. Not only that but he is the one communicating the defense pre-snap. With Bernard not in the middle of the field, it will make for an easier day for Geno Smith and the Seahawks offense.

Playmakers on defense

Getty Images

The Seahawks aren’t among the league leaders in any defensive categories but they are solid across the board.

They have a couple of standout players in the secondary with safety Julian Love and cornerback Tariq Woolen. And opposite of Woolen is Devon Witherspoon who is solid on the outside too. Love is the eighth-highest-graded safety in the NFL per Pro Football Focus, and Woolen is the 11th-highest-graded corner.

Their defensive line is also a problem. They have one of the better defensive tackle duos in Leonard Williams and Jarran Reed. Josh Allen and Joe Brady need to be aware of where a lot of these guys are on every play.

Bills at Jets: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 6

Bills at Jets: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 6

The Buffalo Bills (3-2) will visit the New York Jets (2-3) in their upcoming Week 6 matchup.

Even with it being an AFC East clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Monday’s Bills-Jets contest:

OL Dion Dawkins vs. DE Micheal Clemons

(Getty)

Let’s be honest, this is all about off the field.

In the past, Dawkins and Clemons have had flare ups during games. It has turned into a war of words at times.

Most recently, Dawkins had a laugh on social media about the Jets firing head coach Robert Saleh this week. These two will be going at each other hard.

WR Keon Coleman vs. CB Sauce Gardner

(Photo by Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images)

Buffalo’s second-round rookie receiver has had a few moments in his career but not many. No big breakout games. The Bills need one and this is a tough task.

Going against the entire Jets secondary is difficult. Gardner is at the top of the list.

Quarterback Josh Allen will need a lot more help than he got from his receivers last week.

LB Terrel Bernard vs. RB Breece Hall

(Getty)

Like the Bills offense, the Jets struggled on that side of the ball last week as well. However, their issues have been going on for most of the NFL season. The reason why is easy to see.

It will be a full-defensive effort to stop a rushing attack. But Bernard leads that unit. When New York can’t run the ball, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been forced into mistakes because their game plan becomes predictable. That will play into Buffalo’s hand as their secondary is very good, too.

Bills’ Dorian Williams: ‘It’s all starting to click now’

Bills’ Dorian Williams: ‘It’s all starting to click now’

Buffalo Bills linebacker Dorian Williams has found himself in a big role in year two.

Williams, a 2023 third-rounder out of Tulane, was projected to be a top reserve linebacker for the Bills this year. A training camp injury to starting linebacker Matt Milano changed the course of Williams’ season.

Thrust into a starting role from Week 1, Williams has now had five consecutive starts to begin the year. It’s near-impossible to replace the production from the former All-Pro Milano, but Williams has shined so far.

While Williams has started to his his stride, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott complimented him even earlier.

“I thought he did a good job,” McDermott said after Williams’ first start against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

He enters Week 6’s matchup against the New York Jets (2-3) tied for the league lead in tackles (54). He posted 11 solo tackles in his last game. Williams is flying around the field, using his instincts, and making solid tackles. The way he finishes plays is reminiscent of Milano.

When asked about his play this year in Thursday’s post-practice press conference, Williams was appreciative of the support around him.

“Learning every week, taking what everybody has to say into account. I think it has helped a lot, for sure,” he said.

Williams was transparent in saying he wasn’t prepared to see much time during his rookie year, but fellow linebacker and team captain Terrel Bernard reassured him that his time would come.

“Last year I did come in a little under the bar I think,” Williams said. “[Bernard told me] ‘learn every day… my first year I didn’t really know what was going on either’. Once he told me that, I understood what was expected out of me. I took the offseason to learn a lot. They let me keep my iPad so I studied all summer and it’s all starting to click now, for sure.”

In 2023, Williams started just two games for the Bills. Now, he is looking like he could be the long-term answer at weakside linebacker given Milano’s health struggles. Milano will take his job back when he’s ready to go later this season, but Williams is taking the opportunity in front of him and running with it for now.

What the Bills said about facing Texans WR Stefon Diggs

What the Bills said about facing Texans WR Stefon Diggs

The Buffalo Bills are preparing to face the Houston Texans in Week 5 on Sunday.

The Bills will have their hands full with a budding Texans team. They have a young up-and-coming quarterback in CJ Stroud, a rock-solid defense, and a plethora of weapons on offense to be wary of.

One of those weapons is Stefon Diggs, who is preparing to face the Bills for the first time since he was traded from Buffalo to Houston in April. He was traded along with a couple of late picks for a 2025 second-round draft pick.

Diggs spent four seasons in Buffalo from 2020-2023, and they were the best seasons of his career. In his first year with the Bills in 2020, he took the league by storm. That year, he led the league in both receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535). He was named First Team All-Pro that year, and he made the Pro Bowl each year he was in Buffalo.

Members of the Bills sounded appreciative of the time they spent with Diggs when asked about it this week. And, Diggs showed love for his former squad and his time in Buffalo as well:

“We had some good years and some real good runs,” Diggs said this week. “Played at a very high level and built a bond with a good group of guys. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Bills head coach Sean McDermott and Diggs butted heads at times over the last few years. McDermott was quoted as saying he was “very concerned” when Diggs didn’t show for minicamp during the 2023 offseason. But, this week, McDermott chose to remember the good times and praised Diggs for his level of play:

“We’ll have our work cut out for us,” McDermott said via press conference. “Stef is playing at a high level. He was a really good player here as you guys know and he’s competitive. We respect Stef. We love Stef.”

The love-fest continued when quarterback Josh Allen spoke to the media. The Buffalo signal caller says he appreciates what Diggs did for him early in his career.

“I got a lot of love for him and I still do,” Allen said. “The things he did for me and my career and the things he did in a Buffalo Bill uniform won’t be forgotten anytime soon, especially from me.”

Through four games with the Texans, Diggs has amassed 25 catches for 233 yards and three total touchdowns. He’s shown he has more left in the tank and he fits in perfectly to form a dangerous attack in Houston’s offense.

So, the Bills aren’t very concerned with the idea of facing an old friend. What they are concerned with is preventing him and the Texans offense from getting rolling.

Bills nickel cornerback Taron Johnson is on pace to make his return from injury this week. According to PFF, Diggs has been in the slot for 126 snaps and out wide for 100 snaps. So, Johnson will see plenty of work on Diggs if he is active.

When asked what it is going to be like going against his former teammate, Johnson said, “I don’t think it’s gonna be too different. I used to go up against him every day in practice, and training camp. I treat training camp like it’s a game so it won’t be too different.”

Bills linebacker and team captain Terrel Bernard had good things to say when it was his turn to answer questions about Diggs.

“He was a really good vet,” Bernard said this week. “He never held back information of how he saw the game or how he approached the game. It was cool to be able to learn from him and be in the same locker room as him for a couple years. We’re excited to see him.”

The Bills are saying all the right things in the media this week ahead of their matchup with Diggs and the Texans. And it does seem genuine. But, when the ball is kicked off Sunday the Bills will only focus on one thing: getting back in the win column.

Bills rule out two key starters for Sunday night matchup vs. Ravens

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has officially ruled out CB Taron Johnson (forearm) and LB Terrel Bernard (pec) for Sunday night’s game in Baltimore.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has officially ruled out slot cornerback Taron Johnson (forearm) and linebacker Terrel Bernard (pec) for Sunday night’s game in Baltimore.

Bernard participated only in Thursday’s practice, during which he wore a red non-contact jersey in individual drills during the viewing session available to the media. McDermott said that Bernard is expected to continue participating in drills on Friday.

Cornerback Kaiir Elam (neck) was limited Thursday, but McDermott expects him to be ready for Week 4.

Additionally, rookie offensive lineman Tylan Grable was placed on injured reserve (groin) earlier this week, and the team signed offensive lineman Will Clapp on their 53-man roster.

Ravens practicing without three starting linemen ahead of Bills matchup

The Baltimore Ravens had three members of their starting offensive linemen not practicing due to injury to start this week’s practices in preparation for a Sunday night clash with the Buffalo Bills.

On top of three offensive linemen not participating in practice, there’s also a fourth on the injury report but was able to practice.

According to the Ravens’ injury report, center Tyler Linderbaum (knee), left guard Andrews Vorhees (ankle), and right tackle Patrick Mekari (neck) did not practice on Wednesday.

Right guard Daniel Faalele (hip) was on the injury report but practiced fully. He was still listed because NFL rules state any player getting extra treatment on a previous injury still has to be designated on the injury report.

Any amount of starting offensive linemen missing a contest could be a matchup that a defense tries to take advantage of… let alone three to four of them potentially being sidelined.

Also for the Ravens, cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (hamstring) did not practice and linebacker Roquan Smith (ankle) logged a limited practice.

As for the Bills, Terrel Bernard (pectoral), Taron Johnson (forearm), and Tylan Grable (groin) did not practice, and Kaiir Elam (neck) was limited.
