Tennessee is coming off its worst loss of the season, a 63-56 home loss as 11-point favorites to a Kentucky team which was coming off a 71-68 home loss of its own against a 20-point underdog in South Carolina. Coach John Calipari was and is on the hot seat and this was a bad loss for Tennessee.

Tennessee at Mississippi State picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 71, Mississippi State 56

Moneyline

PASS on the moneyline in this game in favor of the spread.

Against the spread

TENNESSEE -5.5 (-115) is the bet to make here.

The Volunteers will come out and look to get the offense on track in this game. After only putting up 56 points on Saturday against Kentucky, the Vols will press the pace in Starkville. The Bulldogs will not be able to keep pace and will find behind early and stay there.

Over/Under

OVER 123.5 (-105) for this game is the way to bet.

Despite 2 elite defenses that combined allow only 111.5 points per game, Tennessee will use its premier athletic advantage to make this a higher- scoring game. Even though the Bulldogs will not be able to keep up, they will score enough to get this game to the Over.

The No. 18 Tennessee Volunteers (16-6, 7-3 SEC) visit Humphrey Coliseum Wednesday to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs (14-8, 5-4). Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Tennessee vs. Mississippi State odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Vols are coming off a 24-point victory (81-57) on the road over the South Carolina Gamecocks. They outscored South Carolina by 20 in the second half.

While an impressive win, the Vols are just 5-5 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 and 7-3 straight up in that span. Tennessee has the 95th-ranked offense and 35-ranked defense.

As for Mississippi State, it has yet to win on the road 0-5, but the Bulldogs are still an impressive 12-1 at home.

They’re 5-4-1 ATS over their last 10 and are 11-10-1 ATS on the season. The Bulldogs are 6-3 ATS in conference play, while the Vols are 5-5 ATS against SEC opponents.

Tennessee at Mississippi State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Mississippi State 70, Tennessee 68

Money line

SPRINKLE on MISSISSIPPI STATE (+100).

The Volunteers might have gone on the road and taken down the Gamecocks recently, but they’re still just 3-4 straight up on the road. With the Bulldogs having also defeated the Gamecocks by double figures, they should put up a good fight.

Mississippi State ranks just 119th in points per game (73.5) but is 41st in shooting, knocking down 47.1% of its attempts from the field. That type of efficiency is going to be crucial against a solid Tennessee defense.

It is also a weak part of the Vols defense as they may rank 35th in opponents’ points per game but allow their opponents to shoot 41.4% from the field, 92nd-best in the NCAA.

The efficient Bulldogs offense should be able to score on the Vols and, behind their home crowd, subsequently win the game as well.

Against the spread

BET MISSISSIPPI STATE +1.5 (-120).

Expecting a hard-fought battle, I don’t mind taking the 1.5 points. As we saw in Tuesday’s Auburn-Arkansas, it’s tough to win on the road in the SEC and many of these games will go down to the wire. (No. 1 Auburn was upset at Arkansas 80-76 in overtime).

As for the Bulldogs, they’ve been better ATS in conference play and have a home-court advantage that should play a huge factor. The Bulldogs are 9-4 ATS at home.

They’re 2-1 ATS against ranked opponents as well. They’re also 5-2 ATS after a loss. Combine it all, and Mississippi State should be able to cover in this one.

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 135.5 (-108).

The Bulldogs score efficiently and are led by G Iverson Molinar, who averages 18.2 points and 4.0 assists per game. They are 13-9 O/U on the season and 8-5 O/U as the home team.

They’ve gone over in 8 of their last 10. As for the Vols, they’re 10-12 O/U on the season, yet have gone Over the projected total in 3 of their last 4, having scored at least 80 in two straight games.
