The 2024 edition of The Game Awards was held on Thursday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where Team ASOBI’s Astro Bot was the big winner of the night.

Astro Bot took home several awards, including Game of the Year and Best Action/Adventure Game.

On New Year’s Eve, the Alabama Crimson Tide will take to the field for what is the final time during the 2024 season when the program faces the Michigan Wolverines in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

An opponent whom Alabama is familiar with, these two programs met just a year ago in a matchup that would certainly more high-profile than this one is shaping up to be. That is because the game was in the CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl, which is where Michigan handed Alabama a loss on their way to winning the national championship.

This year’s meeting between the two however will not take place in the CFP, instead featuring an Alabama team outside of the Top 10 against an unranked Michigan program.

Who will Alabama play in the ReliaQuest Bowl?

The Crimson Tide are matched up against the Michigan Wolverines in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Michigan is coming off a 7-5 regular season in which the Wolverines went 5-4 in Big Ten play.

How Alabama, Michigan match up

As indicated by the record above, Michigan did not have as good of a season as the year prior, but make no mistake, the Wolverines are a talented team.

Michigan’s resume is headlined by a road win at Ohio State, with their next biggest victory likely being against USC. The Wolverines’ losses have come against Texas, Washington, Illinois, Oregon, and Indiana, and have not been ranked since mid-October.

Stats-wise, Michigan’s strength comes on defense where they rank No. 25 in the nation at only 20.5 PPG allowed, while also sitting No. 112 nationally on offense at an average of 22.2 PPG.

Alabama is 9-3 overall this season with a highlight win over Georgia, while their losses came against Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. The Crimson Tide rank No. 17 nationally with an average of 35.5 PPG offensively, as well as No. 10 in the nation in scoring defense at 17.2.

Ohio State has a narrow loss on the road to No. 1 Oregon but then looked far from the talented team we saw all year in an inexcusable loss to Michigan.

Expect both defenses to dictate play, especially with the offensive line issues we’ve seen from Ohio State. The Buckeyes have a slightly better defense, so we expect a tight game, but one where OSU comes out on top looking to make good on a season that fell a little short of other goals and expectations.

The Irish know who they’ll face in the CFP

Notre Dame football found out who they’ll host in the first-round of the College Football Playoff on Sunday afternoon, and their opponent will not have to travel for to get to Notre Dame Stadium.

The Irish finished the season ranked as the No. 5 team in the CFP rankings, which was a bit different than what the US LBM Coaches Poll had them at. As one of the only teams across the country with just one-loss, Notre Dame heading into the postseason with hopes of making a run in the new 12-team format.

How Notre Dame and Indiana match up

The Hoosiers statistically have a better offense than the Irish, averaging 438.8 yards per-game compared the Notre Dame’s 421.3, but not much of a difference there. Indiana is the second-ranked scoring team in the country with 43.3 points-per-game, with the Irish right behind them nationally with 39.8.

Defensively the Hoosiers have been great this fall, allowing us 14.7 points-per-game to Notre Dame’s 13.6. Both of them ranks inside the top-10 of that category nationally. Indiana allows just 244.8 yards-per-game, while the Irish give up 296.8.

When you look at who Indiana has played, its two close games have been against tougher opponents. Notre Dame has cruised through its schedule after Week 2, and if it plays out how I think it will, the Irish will move to the next round.
