Browns bring four in for visits on Saturday

Browns had four in town for visits Saturday including two who were with the team back in August:

The Cleveland Browns aren’t passively dealing with their roster limitations due to COVID-19. They have added Willie Harvey Jr. to the roster and brought back Bryan Mills to the practice squad. Earlier this week, the team signed Kyle Lauletta to the active roster, bringing back their former training camp quarterback.

The NFL gave teams in the postponed games extra time to get their rosters in order as well. Given all the players the Browns have on the reserve/COVID-19 list, that could mean they still need to add some players to the roster.

With the possibility of doing such, Cleveland had four players in for a visit on Saturday:

  • DE Romeo McKnight
  • LB Tegray Scales
  • DB Chris Miller
  • DB Jameson Houston

The first two names will be familiar to Browns fans. McKnight was with the team in August before being waived while Scales was signed around the same time. Neither record a stat with the team.

Miller, an undrafted free agent out of Baylor, has been with Arizona and Washington this year while Houston played three games for Philadelphia in 2020 before being traded to Jacksonville this offseason.

None of the four players were officially noted as having workouts with the team but that could happen on Sunday. Workouts are not required for the team to sign a player and are less likely with McKnight and Scales since the team knows them.

The Cleveland Browns added a healthy body to the battered linebacking corps on Wednesday. The team signed free agent LB Tegray Scales to the roster.

Scales comes to Cleveland hoping to stick on a roster. He’s bounced around the NFL since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana in the 2018 NFL draft. He saw his only regular season action with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020, playing almost exclusively on special teams in four games.

In college, Scales was an inside backer with good tackling power and quick play recognition. He stood out in Shrine Bowl practices following his senior season with the Hoosiers. He also had a stint in the XFL.

Scales takes the roster spot of CB Robert Jackson, who was waived on Tuesday.

Steelers waive linebacker to make room for Joe Schobert

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced corresponding roster move for ex-Cleveland Browns linebacker on Saturday.

To make room for the recent acquisition, inside linebacker Joe Schobert, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced they’ve waived Tegray Scales.

If Scales clears waivers, don’t be surprised if you hear his name connected to the Steelers at some point again. Scales has been on and off Pittsburgh’s roster several times since 2019.

As for Schobert, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he’s eager to see what he can bring to Pittsburgh.

“Joe been highly productive in every circumstance that he’s been in,” Tomlin told Steelers media.

“He’s a sideline-to-sideline tackler; he’s good in coverage, has coverage production in terms of interceptions, sack production. He plays a well-rounded game, and so we’re excited about infusing him into what we do.”

The former Cleveland Browns linebacker is expected to join the Pittsburgh Steelers at training camp on Sunday.

What can LB Tegray Scales bring to Pittsburgh Steelers?

Here is a glimpse at what Scales can potentially bring to the Steelers linebacker corps.

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh hosted linebacker Tegray Scales for a visit. On Wednesday, he was signed to the practice squad.

Scales came in for a visit and not a workout because the team was already acquainted with his skillset. The 6’0 linebacker signed a futures contract with Pittsburgh in January 2019 but was cut after the preseason.

What can Scales bring to the team should he be elevated to the 53-man roster? We looked to Pro Football Focus to see the contributions he brought last preseason.

Here is a breakdown of Scales’ PFF grades:

Pittsburgh Steelers host former XFL linebacker for visit

Scales was on the Steelers practice squad last preseason.

The linebacker visits continue for the Pittsburgh Steelers, per the NFL wire. This time, it’s outside linebacker Tegray Scales. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Scales was part of the Steelers 2019 training camp squad.

The Indiana Hoosier signed as an undrafted free agent out with the Los Angeles Rams in 2018, only to be waived after training camp. He was briefly part of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad later that year.

The 6’0 linebacker signed a futures contract with Pittsburgh in January 2019 but was cut after the preseason. He was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad this summer and released on Oct. 27.

Post-Steelers, Scales was with the XFL’s Dallas Renegades, where he had 31 tackles and a sack in five games.

Pittsburgh currently has one vacant spot on its practice squad. We’ll see if it goes to Scales.
