Season ticket-holders irked by Celtics billing in pandemic

Boston Celtics season ticket-holders are irritated they were notified they’ll be billed today for the coming 2020-21 NBA season despite the league not even knowing when it will start.

It could be an oversight, but Boston Celtics season ticket-holders are irked that the franchise seems poised to charge them in the midst of a suspended season during a pandemic.

With many out of work at least temporarily due to the impacts of closures resulting from quarantine orders and social distancing practices, receiving an email alerting them that Celtics season ticket holders would have their first payment for the 2020-21 season processed today was not well-received.

One such fan is Denyson Tavares, interviewed by the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

“It just rubbed me the wrong way,” said Tavares to Himmelsbach. “It’s not like the financial burden about it. It’s just like, we don’t even know when we’re going to play this season, and they’re already extracting money for next season.”

“The optics of this are really terrible,” he added.

At a time when Boston has had to take extraordinary steps to support their own game-night arena staff due to the lack of games for them to work at, Tavares questions the wisdom of not suspending the payment schedule as well.

Noting the financial crunch increasingly bearing down on fans, the architect relates how rapidly things are moving for some financially.

“Two weeks from now we could all not have jobs,” he explained. “And that $220 they charge me a month, that’s groceries. So you kind of have to put things in perspective. I just think, let’s hold off.”

With many seeing jobs they’ve held for years disappear almost overnight, and private businesses finding the clients they depend on out of money — or a sense of safety — to do business with them, it’s a reasonable perspective on a catastrophic situation unlike anything in living memory.

“The NBA is canceled until whenever,” added Tavares. “At least come to an agreement where once we know this season is going to start, then we’ll start charging you again.”

“I don’t think people would have an issue with that.”

In times like this, it’s hard to argue otherwise.

Most TD Garden employees still waiting on pay for suspended games

While the Boston Celtics have committed to paying their game-night arena workers at TD Garden, the company that owns the building and the Boston Bruins has yet to pay their players for the lost games.

While the Boston Celtics have made a commitment to pay their game-night staff at TD Garden for the games suspended by the coronavirus pandemic, many more Garden employees are still in the dark a to whether they will receive any much-needed pay.

TD Garden is a comparatively rare arrangement in the NBA in that the Celtics do not own the arena in which they play, renting it from the parent company who own the building as well as the NHL’s Boston Bruins.

The Bruins and their parent company that owns TD Garden, Delaware North, are now the sole NHL franchise not committing to paying arena workers for lost wages, leaving something of a black mark on the organization for their slow response.

Jeremy M. Jacobs, the principle owner, has not made a statement on the issue, but Bruins vice president of marketing and communications Matt Chmura released a statement on March 13:

“Delaware North at its core is a family company and our top priority is to provide our associates, and their families, with the assurances they deserve during this difficult time. We are actively exploring support options and will have further information in the coming days.”

The Boston Herald’s Marisa Ingemi reports both the Bruins and Delaware North organizations returned inquiries for comment on these issues, but Garden workers told the Herald they’d been advised to seek unemployment benefits, but have heard little else from their employer.

Hopefully the impasse is solved soon, as these families join many others around the U.S. as struggling to make ends meet in the wake of closures in a number of industries impacted by the coronavirus.

Celtics to pay team-employed game-night workers through end of season

The Boston Celtics will pay their own game-night employees throughout the rest of the regular season despite the suspension of NBA activities.

The Boston Celtics’ team-employed game-night arena support staff will be paid through the rest of the regular season, reports MassLive’s John Karalis.

There has been growing concern for the hourly workers of the NBA world, who are among the U.S. and Canada’s hardest-hit with their jobs shuttering ahead of many industries across the two countries.

Pressure for teams around the NBA to cover the salaries of the hourly workers began to pick up in recent days, with most if not all teams committing to covering the much-needed wages.

Due to the fact that the arena the Celtics play in — TD Garden — being owned by their sister franchise in the NHL, the Boston Bruins, it seems there were some kinks to iron out to get such a scenario settled for the arena workers.

The solution seems to be for at least the Celtics to take care of their own, as they should.

Saturday evening, the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn reported the Celtics were working on such a proposition, and it seems — mercifully — to have been achieved.

[lawrence-related id=30960,30944,30924,30915]

Celtics working on getting TD Garden game-night staff pandemic aid

The Boston Celtics are reportedly working on getting aid to the game-night staff at TD Garden.

If you haven’t checked out of all things NBA after the league suspended activities following Rudy Gobert’s positive test results for the coronavirus, you’ve likely noticed a trend unfolding among team governors and players.

A number of franchise owners and players have stepped forward to guarantee the salaries of arena staff and other hourly employees affiliated with the team, yet the Boston Celtics have not.

It isn’t because they’d prefer not to.

The Celtics do not own the building in which they call home court — TD Garden belongs to the sister franchise of the NHL, the Boston Bruins.

So, working out a means of compensating employees which are technically not their own is taking some work, but the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn reports the Celtics are working on a plan to get this taken care of.

No word yet on whether it involves the Bruins organization, but one has to think that the call has at least been made.

Knowing the history of strong community engagement with both organizations, it seems likely it’s more a matter of time rather than if some kind of aid is made available to the local workers who make games for both teams possible.

And with the impact of social isolation practices and game suspensions already taking a big toll on the local economy, such aid will be greatly needed.

Celtics game suspensions already impacting local businesses

The NBA’s decision to suspend the 2019-20 NBA Season –and with it, Boston Celtics games — is already impacting local businesses.

The cancellation of NBA games and preventative measures encouraging limiting exposure to large groups of people is having a strong negative impact on businesses around the country, and Boston is no exception.

After the league suspended all games for the Boston Celtics and other 29 teams, local businesses immediately began to feel the impact. No games, no downtown crowds, no business, no money, no paychecks for many in the service industry.

While it was undoubtedly the right move to make from a public health perspective, the economic aspect of these precautionary measures is very real, and significant.

At local staples like Sullivan’s Tap, proprietors are turning back deliveries with no clients to sell them to, reports the Boston Herald’s Stefan Geller.

“The difference in attendance on a game night is massive; we go from having maybe 20 people here all night to having 300 or 400,” explained Sullivan’s Tap manager Stephanie Scione (via Geller). “What do you do now? How do you get people through the door?”

While it may be good health advice to avoid such large crowds, many working-class families depend on their wages from such surges in business, and will be hard-pressed to make ends meet in their absence.

It’s putting business owners and their employees n a very difficult situation.

Tony Costa, a manager for nearby The Fours Restaurant & Sports Bar relates that his clientele on non-game nights is just 10 % of a game night, and it may soon force some tough decisions.

“We go from 40 employees down to five or six when there’s no game … You never want to talk about layoffs, but whatever happens happens.”

The owner of Boston Beer Works Joe Slesar suggests the reaction is not unlike what was seen after the September 11th or Boston Marathon bomber terrorist attacks, and could result in the loss of hundreds of local jobs.

“There are hundreds of families that depend on our business and there are thousands that depend on hospitality in general … We’ve got to tighten our belts and stick through this, but we’re trying to figure out what we can do with our staff.”

“It’s not just us, it’s the food vendors, the cleaning companies, the delivery people,” added Costa. “Everyone in the area is going to feel the effects.”

Prediction

Celtics 113, Thunder 111

Moneyline (ML)

The Celtics (-176) are expected to win this one on their home court, but laying more than two times your potential return is not a good way to bet. My personal maximum on the moneyline is -170 to -180, and even that’s pushing it. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Celtics -176 returns a profit of just $4.50 if they win. A $10 bet on the Thunder +145 returns a profit of $14.5.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The THUNDER (+4.5, -115) have covered seven of their past 10 trips to Boston, and they’ll be in good shape to do so again. They covered a 1 1/2-point spread as underdogs in a 112-111 loss to Boston at home on Feb. 9. Expect another close battle in this one, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 219.5 (-106) has cashed in four of the past five meetings in this building. While the under is 3-0 in the past three for Boston against Western Conference opponents, the total went Over in the first game between these two clubs back in early February.

It’s tough to take Overs in Boston games, as they rank second in the NBA with 106.8 PPG allowed, and they’re fourth in defensive field goal percentage (44.1) and second in defensive 3-pointer % (34.1). Oklahoma City is coming off a 126-point effort in New York, and they’re fifth in field goal % at 47.4. This won’t be a track meet, but it will inch Over.

Prediction

Nets 113, Celtics 107

Moneyline (ML)

Brooklyn beating Boston isn’t out of the question — the Nets are 3-2 in their last five games against the Celtics (-278). Plus, Tatum and Smart were both held out of Boston’s practice Monday due to an illness and their game-time statuses are still undetermined. Monitor the injury report up until the lineups are confirmed because if the Celtics are without their leading scorer and defensive anchor, the value is on the Nets. The Nets’ Walker is scheduled to return from a five-game hiatus but the Celtics, as a team, didn’t really step up to replace his offense. Tatum did. During Walker’s absence, Tatum averaged 34.0 points per game on 50.9% field-goal shooting, including 50.0% behind the arc. However, the bench averaged an NBA-low 13 PPG over those five games, which was 6.6 PPG behind the second-to-last team in bench scoring (the Portland Trail Blazers). Walker will be on a minutes restriction in his first game back and if Tatum and/or Smart sit, the Celtics will turn to bad bench players. Bet the NETS (+220).

New to sports betting? Bet $50 on the Nets +220 to earn a profit of $110 if Brooklyn upsets Boston.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Since we’re sprinkling on the Nets ML, we are definitely hammering NETS +6.5 (-110). Ignore the fact that the Celtics have covered six straight games and the Nets are 2-4 ATS in their last six games. This is a situational play through and through, the only positive trend I have (or need) is that the Nets are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings with the Celtics.

Over/Under (O/U)

The first two meetings of the season went Over, albeit, the totals were lower than tonight’s 219.5. I have a slight lean toward OVER 219.5 (-110) for the following reasons. First, the combined O/U record of the officiating crew assigned to this game is 79-56. Second, the Over is 4-0 in the Celtics last four games as a favorite. Third, the Over is 10-2 in the Nets last 12 games vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600. Because of the injury woes of both clubs, I do not love betting the total here.

Houston Rockets at Boston Celtics odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Houston Rockets at Boston Celtics sports betting odds, with NBA matchup analysis and picks.

The Houston Rockets (38-20) head to Beantown to play the Boston Celtics (41-17) Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET in the TD Garden. We analyze the Rockets-Celtics odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Rockets at Celtics: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Saturday at 3:45 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Celtics 118, Rockets 111

Moneyline (ML)

The Rockets +105 have beaten the Celtics -129 in four straight games, including a 116-105 win at Houston just before the All-Star break. James Harden and Russell Westbrook erupted in that one for 42 and 36 points, respectively. But the key to the Rockets’ victory was bottling up Jayson Tatum, who only had 15 points—his only game with fewer than 20 points in his last 15.

Now Tatum is on a tear with 33+ points in five of his past six games. With no Kemba Walker in the lineup, the Celtics need Tatum to step up, and he should light up Danuel House—who’s the worst defensively rated player in the Rockets starting lineup. Also, Boston has the fourth-best winning percentage at home this season (23-5) and I have a hunch their home-court advantage will be even greater since they are playing a Saturday night nationally televised game.

TAKE CELTICS -129 on the moneyline. New to sports betting? Bet $129 on the Celtics to earn a $100 profit if they win straight up.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS on the AGAINST THE SPREAD wager and just stick with the moneyline bet. But since the 1.5-point line is so small we can use ATS trends to reinforce our moneyline handicap. The Celtics -1.5 (-110) are 17-10-1 ATS at home compared to a Rockets +1.5 (-110) team that is 14-15 ATS in road games. Also, Boston is 9-2 ATS at home against winning teams but Houston is a solid 6-4 in away games versus teams above .500.

Over/Under (O/U)

The bright lights of the ABC cameras could cause the refs to allow the Rockets-Celtics to play a more physical brand of basketball, i.e. fewer foul shots. Plus their combined Over/Under record in nonconference games is just 17-25. Furthermore, the Under is 7-0 in the last seven meetings in Boston and 9-2 in the Rockets’ last 11 against a team with a winning record.

I LEAN UNDER 232.5 (-115).

Dallas Stars at Boston Bruins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Dallas Stars at Boston Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

[jwplayer wcHtPTSE]

The Dallas Stars (37-20-6) will tangle with the Boston Bruins (39-13-12) Thursday at TD Garden at 7:30 p.m. ET (on NBCSN). We analyze the Stars-Bruins sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Stars at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Ben Bishop vs. Jaroslav Halak

Bishop heads into this one with a 21-13-4 record, 2.45 goals against average and .922 save percentage across his 41 appearances (40 starts). He faced the B’s in his first appearance of the season, falling 2-1 while making 18 saves on 20 shots Oct. 3. He hasn’t been as sharp since the All-Star break, turning in a 5-3-1 record, but a subpar 3.05 GAA and .906 SV% in nine outings.

Halak is expected to get the starting nod after Tuukka Rask (23-7-6, 2.22 GAA, .926 SV%) lost to the Calgary Flames Tuesday, his first home loss in regulation this season. Halak is 16-6-6 with a 2.42 GAA and .918 SV% across 29 appearances (27 starts). He has won five of his past six appearances, and three consecutive starts at home.

Stars at Bruins: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 5:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Bruins 3, Stars 2

Moneyline (ML)

The BRUINS (-182) are right at or slightly above the threshold for moneylines I like to play. They’re facing a red-hot Stars team (+150) that just dismantled the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 in Raleigh Tuesday. In fact, the Stars are 6-1 in the past seven as an underdog, 5-1 in the past six as a road dog and 7-2 in the past nine overall. The road team has also won 10 of the past 13 meetings in this series. However, the B’s are 10-3 in the past 13 against winning teams and 7-1 in the past eight as a home favorite.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Bruins ML returns a profit of $5.49 if they win, while a $10 wager on the Stars ML results in a profit of $15 if they win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The moneyline is much more attractive than taking the Bruins (-1.5, +145), even though they’re tempting at this price level. The Stars (+1.5, -173) are too expensive, too, if you’re looking for a little insurance. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-139) is the play with two strong defensive teams. Dallas ranks third in the NHL in goals allowed, while Boston leads the league in the category. The B’s are also No. 3 on the penalty kill at 83.8 percent, so you can expect goals to be at a premium in this one.

Calgary Flames at Boston Bruins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Calgary Flames at Boston Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Calgary Flames (32-25-6) travel to battle the Boston Bruins (39-12-12) Tuesday at the TD Garden at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Flames-Bruins sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Flames at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

David Rittich vs. Tuukka Rask

The All-Star Rittich is expected to start, putting his 23-15-5 record, 2.91 goals against average and .908 save percentage on the line. He’ll have a new defenseman in front of him, as the Flames bolstered their rearguard at the deadline by grabbing Erik Gustafsson from the Chicago Blackhawks. That will help the likes of Rittich, and the Flames as a whole. They also added sandpaper in the form of Derek Forbort from the Los Angeles Kings.

Rask is expected to go for the B’s, and while his overall numbers of 23-6-6, 2.17 GAA and .928 SV% are phenomenal, his splits at home are even better. He is 14-0-6 with a 1.97 GAA and .933 SV%, with all three of his season’s shutouts coming on home ice. Since the All-Star break he is 6-2-0 with a 1.81 GAA, as he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Flames at Bruins: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 1:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Bruins 4, Flames 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Bruins (-223) are just too expensive on the moneyline, even if Rask hasn’t suffered a loss in regulation at home this season. To get ahead in gambling, particularly on moneylines, you cannot risk more than twice as much as your return. Eventually you’re going to get burned. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Bruins to win returns a profit of $4.48, while a $10 wager on the Flames (+180) results in a profit of $18.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The better play is on the BRUINS (-1.5, +125) at plus-money. Still, I’d make this a small-unit wager since the Flames (+1.5, -154) are 5-1 in the past six games on the road and 8-2 in the past 10 as an underdog. While the Flames might look attractive when you see those trends, know they’re 1-5 in the past six meetings with the B’s, and 2-7 in the past nine trips to Beantown.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under (-200) is priced too high. I’m staying away. The trends are split, per side, with the Over in favor of the Flames, and the Under a slam-dunk on the B’s. In fact, the Over is 6-0-1 in Calgary’s past seven on the road, and 5-1 in the past six against winning sides. The Under is 5-1 in the past six at home for the B’s, 11-4 in the past 15 as a favorite and 5-2 in the past seven overall. Your best bet is to AVOID.
