TCU vs Baylor Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

Baylor was able to battle for a while against Texas Tech, but it couldn’t keep up the pace in the 83-73 loss in the first game after losing Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchou to an injury.

TCU might not have a whole lot to offensive firepower, and it might not be Texas Tech defensively, but it’s great at dominating on the boards – it leads the Big 12 in rebounding margin – and it’s great at keeping the score low.

Make this a battle in the low-60s, make it a free throw contest – Baylor isn’t great on the line – and shoot a wee bit better than it did in the 76-64 loss to the Bears in the first meeting back in early January.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor was able to roll in the second half in the first meeting and ended up winning easily with Tchamwa Tchatchou not doing a whole lot.

Baylor might be incredibly inconsistent, but it’s doing a great job overall at home and it has the scoring punch from the outside to take over without any real worry about a bit run from TCU.

The Horned Frogs don’t do anything from three, and even when they do – like against Texas Tech a few days ago – it still usually isn’t enough to matter.

And …

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor is just fine on the boards.

The defense might have struggled late against Texas Tech, but it’ll keep TCU from doing anything on the outside, there won’t be enough lost rebounds to make too much of a difference, and the will be more than enough steals and big defensive plays to overcome the rocky parts.

TCU vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

The defense continues to be terrific.

The Horned Frogs have a nice mix that can work on just about anyone. It might allow way to many teams to shoot well, but it manages to keep scores low – it allows 63 points per game – and it rebounds everything.

There are more than enough offensive boards to make up for the mediocre three-point shooting, there aren’t a ton of second chance points on the other end, and when the inside game is working, everything else comes together.

Texas Tech isn’t going to come out and hang 90 on the board – it’s going to want to play a relatively low scoring, tough battle, too, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Tech Will Win

TCU is playing great defense and gets a whole lot of rebounds. Texas Tech’s D is better.

It’s No. 1 in the Big 12 and among the best in the nation at keeping teams from hitting their shots, allowing just 38% from the field and doing a nice job of slowing down the three.

No, it doesn’t rebound quite as well as TCU does, and it’s going to have to fight a bit to grab the defensive boards, but this shouldn’t be an issue.

TCU isn’t going to be scary from the outside, so as simple as this sounds …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech needs to just make its shots.

It was able to get by West Virginia despite an inability to hit anything from the outside, and it got rocked by Oklahoma after making 2-of-17 from three.

TCU doesn’t have a strong enough offense to crank up big points, but it’s not bad on the road and the rebounds will be there. Texas Tech’s defense, though, will be too good.

The Red Raiders are 14-0 at United Supermarkets. That’s not stopping.

LSU vs TCU Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

TCU might not score.

The Horned Frogs are all about their style. Deliberate, play tough D, rebound everything, repeat. That’s been fine right up until the offense can’t keep up – like in the blowout loss to Texas a few nights ago – and when the other team pumps in a few threes.

This has to stay in the 50s for TCU, but LSU is more than happy to oblige – to a point.

The Tigers got off their three-game losing streak with a win over Texas A&M, but the defense hasn’t stopped being great. It continues to lead the nation in steals and field goal percentage D, and TCU turns the ball over a whole bunch and can’t shoot a lick from the outside.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why TCU Will Win

LSU is a perfect team for TCU.

This isn’t a high-powered Tiger team, it turns the ball over way too much, and it has not problem hacking everything that moves.

Again, this has to stay at 60 or under for each side to be in TCU’s range. It should be able to make up for the lack of firepower with a whole lot of rebounds – they clean up every mistake – and enough inside points to get by.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s TCU’s problem. LSU loses because it puts teams on the free throw line over and over and over again. TCU doesn’t get to the line enough, and it doesn’t take advantage of the chances when it does.

However, it should own the offensive boards and hang on for dear life late in what should be a tight, tense game over the last five minutes.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 82-78 win against TCU in Fort Worth

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 82-78 win over TCU in Fort Worth on Sunday afternoon.

Oklahoma moved to 2-0 on the young season and got a win to open conference play as they knocked off TCU on the road 82-78 on Sunday afternoon.

Austin Reaves led the way with a monster 32 point performance including several key shots and free throws late to help seal the deal.

Defensively, things started off rough for the Sooners allowing 42 first half points and trailing by three at the break. In the second half, things stiffened up a bit and helped them overcome falling behind multiple times.

This was a huge win to provide early confidence to the squad. Here are three main takeaways from Oklahoma’s win down in Fort Worth.

When, where, how to watch Oklahoma take on TCU

Everything you need to know ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Big 12 opener between Oklahoma and TCU.

Oklahoma (1-0) is riding high after their blowout season opening win against UTSA on Thursday night.

After a couple days off, they will get back to action Sunday afternoon for their first road and Big 12 game of the season against TCU (4-0).

It’s not often that the conference opener comes in just the second game of the season, but that is the 2020 schedule for you. Two Big 12 games were placed in the month of December to give the conference more flexibility down the road in the event some games needed to be rescheduled.

Pair that with the Sooners have each of their first three games get either postponed or straight up canceled for the year, and you get a league game in just the second contest of the season.

The Horned Frogs come in having won all four of their games this season, although none of them came against power five competition. This will be their first test as well.

For this afternoon’s Big 12 opener, here is everything you need to know:

Oklahoma helps lock up NCAA Tournament bid with 20-point comeback on the road at TCU

It appears for the seventh time in the last eight years, OU is going to be dancing. Comeback win at TCU helps lock up NCAA Tournament bid.

It appears for the seventh time in the last eight years, Oklahoma is going to be dancing.

Heading into Saturday, the Sooners were a loss on the road at TCU away from being squarely on the bubble and a bad showing at the Big 12 Tournament away from maybe being out of the NCAA Tournament.

Oklahoma boasts a 5-9 record in the ever important quadrant I games against teams inside the RPI top-30 for home games, RPI top-50 for neutral site games and in the RPI top-75 for road games. The Horned Frogs (RPI No. 88) provided an opportunity for another quality win against a quadrant II team, but potential for an average or bad loss.

The Sooners got behind by 20 in the first-half on Saturday, then 17 in the second-half. Oklahoma clawed and scratched its way all the way back before an Austin Reaves game-winning shot with half a second left in the game all but secured the Sooners spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Oklahoma last made the NCAA Tournament a year ago as the Sooners won a game against Ole Miss before losing to eventual NCAA Champion Virginia. The Sooners have made the NCAA Tournament in seven of the last eight seasons under Lon Kruger.

The Big 12 Tournament begins on Thursday, where Oklahoma climbed up to being a 3-seed. The Sooners will play 6-seed West Virginia at the Sprint Center in Kansas City at 8 p.m. CT. Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament is on March 15.

Oklahoma secures 3-seed in Big 12 Tournament with win over TCU

Don’t ask, just take it. With a win over TCU on Saturday, Oklahoma will somehow be the 3-seed in the Big 12 Tournament next week.

Don’t ask, just take it.

Oklahoma headed into Saturday with a chance to be anywhere from the 3-seed in the Big 12 Tournament to the 7-seed. After West Virginia’s upset win over Baylor, it was either three or seven.

The Sooners got behind by 20 with 3:09 left in the first-half against TCU. After making a run in the second half, the Horned Frogs pushed their lead back up to 17 with 10:22 left in the second half.

Oklahoma came charging after, outscoring TCU 34-17 in the next nine minutes of the game. The Sooners got a stop with :29 seconds left with a chance to win or send the game to overtime.

Lon Kruger got the ball to Austin Reaves, who had scored 39 points. He came off a ball screen at the top of the key, sized up a defender, drove right and hit a game-winning shot with half a second left in the game.

The comeback win gave Oklahoma the 3-seed in the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday, where the Sooners will take on the 6-seed. The 3-6 game is schedule to begin at 8 p.m. CT at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

Oklahoma also likely needed a win to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Selection Sunday takes place on March 15.

Austin Reaves hits game-winning shot in final seconds against TCU

After being down by 19 points in the first half and 17 in the second half, Oklahoma’s Austin Reaves hit a game-winning shot to down TCU.

This is March.

Oklahoma stared a return back to the bubble on the road at TCU. The Sooners suffered a horrible loss on Tuesday night at Texas that ended with a Longhorn bank-in three in the final seconds.

Lon Kruger and Oklahoma got behind by 20 in the first half on the road at TCU on Saturday. The Sooners were behind 17 in the second half. Then, they came charging.

Oklahoma faced a 59-42 deficit with 10:22 left in the game. The Sooners clawed all the way back to tie the game at 76 with 55 seconds left. They got a stop, then got the ball to the hot hand in Austin Reaves.

The Wichita State transfer had scored 39 in the game. He sized up the TCU defender with eight seconds left, drove left, faded and released the shot.

Buckets.

Reaves scored a career-high 41 points, 25 of which came in the second half in the Sooners 78-76 win against TCU. The win likely helped secure Oklahoma with an NCAA Tournament bid and the 3-seed in the Big 12 Tournament.

Kruger and the Sooners will play Thursday night in Kansas City at the Big 12 Basketball Tournament in the last game of the day against the 6-seed. Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament is on March 15.

Three reasons why Oklahoma basketball beat TCU 83-63

Oklahoma put its most complete together for a big Big 12 win Saturday. Here are three reasons why the Sooners prevailed against TCU.

A big win for Oklahoma (12-5, 3-2 Big 12) and Lon Kruger.

The Sooners put together their most complete game of the season, beating TCU (12-5, 3-2) from wire-to-wire 83-63. Brady Manek was the star of the show as Kristian Doolittle had an off day.

Oklahoma’s defense was good enough and Kruger got contributions from everyone.

Here are three reasons why the Sooners prevailed against TCU.

BRADY MANEK HAS ARRIVED

Oklahoma has been missing Brady Manek’s 3-point shooting the last few games, but he showed up on Saturday.

The Sooners got 31 points out of him, including 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. Both of those numbers are career highs for the junior forward.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE

TCU shot a whopping 38 percent from the floor, which includes a porous 22 percent from three. Oklahoma’s defense remains a tough test for opponents.

YOUNG DUO GROWIN UP

Freshman point guard De’Vion Harmon was inserted back into the starting lineup against Kansas on Tuesday. He delivered, especially from three, in his return. That carried into Saturday as he scored 10 points and knocked down two open 3-pointers to keep the TCU defense respectable on him.

Freshman counterpart Jalen Hill continues to give Lon Kruger good minutes on the bench. He finished with only four points and two rebounds, but Hill continues to be active on both ends of the floor and make things happen.
