This column giveth, and when this thing taketh away it does so in spectacular burnout fashion.

I know better than to get cocky after a 9-1 run like I had two weeks ago, but last week was a brutal disaster. Now, in my defense, it took a whole lot of historical anomalies for it all to go the way it did.

Give me anyone who saw the Texas A&M offense doing that against Alabama. Not only did I miss that outright, but Florida State beat North Carolina as a 17-point dog.

That was nothing. USC had never lost to Utah in Southern California until last week.

I’m now 0-for-2 in the You’re An SEC Team, Act Like It calls with Missouri continuing the be an epic fail on defense – it didn’t cover against North Texas – and I whiffed by going under on Arkansas-Ole Miss and Maryland-Ohio State. And …

That’s it. The slide stops now with three themes. 1) Spite, 2) it’s Big Ten week, and 3) more spite.

Parts 1 & 3 begin with …

Results So Far ATS: 42-28-1

10. Ole Miss at Tennessee

LINE Point Total 83
ATS PICK Under

I’ll admit it – I got cute.

I have a hard and fast rule to never, ever, ever, ever, ever take the over on a point total of 80 or more. Too many things can go wrong, and the worst that can happen is that it actually does go over, and at least you got a blast of a game to watch.

That’s exactly what happened last week. I modified my rule to 66.5 when it came to Ole Miss and Arkansas. 66.5 isn’t 80, and those two crazy kids combined to annihilate the over in a 52-51 Rebel victory.

83 is over 80, and the point total came down from 85.5. Oh sure, it’s more fun to assume the two killer offenses will go off, but be warned, last week was the first time an Ole Miss game got past 82, and Tennessee only got there in a 62-24 win over Missouri.

That’s Spite, Part 1. Part 2 …

CFN Week 6 Experts Picks: NFL

9. Miami at North Carolina

LINE North Carolina -7.5
ATS PICK Miami

I vowed last week after the disaster against Florida State that I would never, ever, ever, ever pick North Carolina to do anything right ever again.

I’m picking North Carolina.

I know, I shouldn’t be emotional about this, and I shouldn’t pick out of revenge, but it just seems like the Miami thing is about to implode.

D’Eriq King is out for the year, the D that gets its groove on the Turnover Chain has a pathetic four takeaways on the year, and if it’s possible to see an entire team collectively look like the drive-through forgot the fries, that last second upright-doink loss to Virginia was it.

That, and North Carolina appears to be one of those adjustment teams.

It didn’t get the O going against Virginia Tech, and then it ran the ball more effectively and blasted Georgia State and Virginia. The run D didn’t get off the bus against Georgia Tech, and then the team stopped Duke cold.

The run defense against Florida State was pathetic, and this week the offense will make up for it with well over 400 yards.

Week 7 Schedule, Game Times, Game Previews

8. TCU at Oklahoma

LINE Oklahoma -13.5
ATS PICK TCU

All the game predictions are done without looking at the lines – the goal is to not be influenced by them one way or another. Once in a while, though, it’s hard not to want to adjust the predicted score to fit what the narrative should probably be.

This week, that narrative is simple. Oklahoma found the right quarterback, the offense will play like it’s supposed to, and America is about to deal with the unleashed beast the devoured Texas in the second half of last week.

There’s that – now that Caleb Williams appears to be the main man for now – and there’s a TCU team that’s hammered by key injuries, including to QB Max Duggan.

So we did the preview and got to the final predicted score, and I kept wanting to change it to Oklahoma by a few touchdowns. There’s one problem with that.

Oklahoma has yet to beat any FBS team by more than seven points – it has yet to play a solid full 60 minutes against anyone but Western Carolina, and even then the game was over instantly.

Not Tulane, not West Virginia, not anyone. Granted, that was all with Spencer Rattler at the helm before Williams pulled the team out of the fire.

Combine that with a TCU team that doesn’t play a lick of D but keeps everything close, and the possible letdown factor after the emotion in Dallas, and 13.5 might be a bit too generous.

TCU vs Oklahoma Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

It’s not like all of Oklahoma’s problems just magically floated away.

Of course it’s been a fun week of doing the hand gesture thing the other way and making Texas people feel bad about themselves, but the fact remains that this is still a very, very inconsistent Sooner team that has yet to win a game against an FBS team by more than a touchdown.

TCU is a lot of things with a lot of issues, but it’s amazing at converting on third downs, it’s efficient enough to score whenever there’s a chance, and it doesn’t beat itself with a ton of penalties, turnovers, and mistakes.

It’s an efficient team that’s going to keep coming at OU for a full 60 minutes. Considering how the Sooners all but tried to give away the Tulane and Kansas State games, and didn’t get the wake-up call that the Red River Showdown started at 11 local time, this might not be an easy out.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Does TCU have anyone left to put on the field?

The team might have beaten Texas Tech 52-31, but it took a massive hit injury-wise in several spots. Worst of all, leading rusher Zach Evans and star QB Max Duggan were both banged up enough to be very, very questionable for this.

Those two don’t play run D, though.

The Horned Frogs have been blasted over the last three weeks by the SMU, Texas, and Texas Tech ground games for well over 800 yards and close to six yards per pop.

Thanks to the legendary performance by backup QB Caleb Williams, and a huge day from Kennedy Brooks, the OU ground attack finally worked against a good team, rolling up 339 yards on the ground and a season-high 662 yards overall.

For what it’s worth, Williams was taking most of the first team reps in practice, but Spencer Ratter is still in the mix.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Even with all of the injuries, TCU is never the team – and Gary Patterson isn’t the coach – you want to face when you need to refocus after a massive game like Oklahoma just played.

Here’s the big question – does the Oklahoma offense go back to being the OKLAHOMA offense with Williams under center? Can the team maintain the explosion and balance is showed last week in Dallas?

It’s not like the team was bad with Rattler – it just wasn’t able to finish off games with ease, and the rushing attack wasn’t there without a runner under center.

TCU has played up or down to its competition all year, and it’s about to do it yet again with a plucky effort in the second half. The Sooners will get up big right away, but the Horned Frogs will slowly keep chipping away.

It still won’t be enough. OU will be 7-0 with yet another interesting performance.

10. Samford at Auburn

LINE: Auburn -48.5
Live Stream: fuboTV (click to watch for free)
ATS PICK: Samford
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

For those of you new to the program, here’s the tried-and-true, blind-faith belief system that’s worked really, really well this year.

If the world wants to give a team 40 points or more, you take them, you say “thank you,” and you move on.

There are a whole slew of things that have to happen to win by more than 40 points – it’s actually hard to do.

Sometimes a team shows mercy – like Ohio State did against Rutgers last week – and sometimes a team isn’t good enough to win by a bazillion, like Northwestern not covering against UMass.

However, there are a few things to take into account when it comes to the FBS vs. FCS matchups late in the season. 1) Is it the final home game for the FBSer? If it is, the starters will likely stay in a bit longer. Alabama is coming to Auburn next week. 2) Does the team need a week off to rest everyone?

You ready to play the deep cut on this?

The last two times Auburn played a wipeout paycheck game at home before going to Alabama, it won it brutal blowouts – by 53 over Liberty last year, and 55-0 against Alabama A&M in 2016. However …

The last few times it was the game BEFORE Senior Day – like it is this year? 42-14 over ULM in 2017, 56-34 over Idaho in 2015, 35-16 over Samford in 2011, 62-24 over UT Chattanooga in 2010, and 37-20 over UT Martin in 2008.

The gods are handing you 48.5 points AND a wacky trend/streak?

In this case, Samford actually has a fun enough offense that it can luck its way into a touchdown or two against the backups.

And from the Department of Oh Screw It, We’ve Come This Far With The Theme …

9. Arkansas at LSU

LINE: LSU -43.5
Live Stream: fuboTV (click to watch for free)
ATS PICK: Arkansas
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Take everything that was just said about the FBS vs. FCS thing, and apply it to this.

The Arkansas Razorbacks will get up Saturday morning up 43.5-0.

LSU can win the SEC West with a victory, but it has bigger fish to fry next week against Texas A&M and the week after against Georgia in – most likely – the SEC Championship.

It’s not Senior Day – that’s next week – so this is just about coming up with an instant wipeout and then sitting everyone possible. Also, as dominant as LSU has been, it hasn’t won a game by more than 43 against an FBS team since the 55-3 win over Georgia Southern in the opener.

One more thing. After what happened last week to Tua Tagovailoa, but watch out for some teams to be a bit spooked about how long the superstar starting quarterback keeps playing in a blowout.

[lawrence-related id=501370]

8. Pitt at Virginia Tech

LINE: Virginia Tech -3.5
Live Stream: fuboTV (click to watch for free)
ATS PICK: Virginia Tech
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Stick with the hot hand. It’s the last home game of the year for a Virginia Tech team that’s in the thick of the ACC Coastal hunt. Pitt is, too, but the Hokies have rolled in their last two games, played Notre Dame well, and has won five of their last six games. Pitt is hot, too – winning six of its last seven – but the Hokies are sharper. You’re only giving away an extra half point taking the home team.

7. Nevada at Fresno State

LINE: Fresno State -14
Live Stream: fuboTV (click to watch for free)
ATS PICK: Nevada
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This isn’t the Fresno State of the last two years. The defense isn’t nearly as nasty, it  lost three of its last four, and the only win so far by more than 14 is over UNLV. The Bulldogs just played San Diego State – and lost – while Nevada has had two weeks off since winning on the road in San Diego. The Wolf Pack were blown away by Utah State and Wyoming on the road by a total score of 67-13 in their previous two road games, but the Bulldogs just aren’t that potent.

[lawrence-related id=501293]

6. Nebraska at Maryland

LINE: Nebraska -4.5
Live Stream: fuboTV (click to watch for free)
ATS PICK: Nebraska
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Nebraska has last four straight and five of its last six. It can’t seem to do much of anything right, and that includes only scoring 13 in a win over a miserable Northwestern team. However, the offense started to click last week against Wisconsin, Adrian Martinez played well, and the team wasn’t that bad in a 37-21 loss.

Maryland is rested after two weeks off, and it’s the home finale, but it hasn’t come closer than six of anyone but Rutgers since losing to Temple 20-17 back in mid-September. Basically, Nebraska is bad, but Maryland is a whole lot worse.
