Taysom Hill hits important milestone with TD vs. Panthers

New Orleans Saints jack-of-all-trades Taysom Hill has hit a new personal milestone with his clutch touchdown against the Panthers:

New Orleans Saints jack-of-all-trades Taysom Hill has hit a new personal milestone during the team’s Sunday matchup against the Carolina Panthers, now totaling 41 career touchdowns. That ties him for ninth in the team record books with standout running back Pierre Thomas.

Hill came into the game totaling four receptions on seven targets for 23 yards over four appearances so far during the 2024 season. He also had carried the ball 18 times for 97 yards with two touchdowns.

In addition to that, Hill is credited with one forced fumble as well. In this particular game, he’s recorded two receptions for 26 yards with a long of 13 yards. For now, that makes him the team’s leading receiver.

He’s also the team’s second-leading rusher behind running back Alvin Kamara today with four carries for 16 yards and the touchdown.

The Saints currently hold a slight lead over the Panthers at halftime, at 13-10 over the first two quarters of action.

WATCH: Taysom Hill forces a safety for the Saints on a botched punt

Taysom Hill made an immediate impact in his first game back from injury. He forced a safety for the Saints after the Chargers botched a punt:

The New Orleans Saints’ defense and special teams started off strong against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, with their first score of the day coming on a forced safety.

Los Angeles botched the snap on their second punt of the day, and Taysom Hill, who recently returned from injury, forced the punter to cough up the ball after an attempted recovery. That caused the ball to skid out of the endzone for a New Orleans safety, giving them an early 2-0 lead.

The Saints have not had a safety since 2020, which came in their matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. They will now look to build off their two point lead throughout the remainder of the matchup, and we will see if they can capitalize off of this rare occurrence.

Week 8 broadcast map: Will your station carry Saints vs. Chargers?

The New Orleans Saints’ Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers is a strictly local affair per the 506 Sports broadcast maps:

The New Orleans Saints are back after a 10-day break since losing to the Denver Broncos on “Thursday Night Football.” This week, they square off with another AFC West team, the Los Angeles Chargers. New Orleans opened up Week 7 and the Chargers closed it on Monday night.

The Saints return a much healthier team than last time you saw them. They bring back key pieces, such as Chris Olave and Taysom Hill, to help Spencer Rattler in his third start. Improved health should to improved offense which hopefully leads to breaking a five-game losing streak.

The Saints’ trip to the West Coast results in the Saints first late kickoff of the season. Saints versus Chargers will air on FOX, but will you be able to catch it in your local area? Kickoff is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT on FOX.

If you’re in Louisiana or parts of its neighboring states, the answer is yes. The Los Angeles to San Diego area is also showing the game on local channels. Per 506 Sports, only local areas are televising the game. Chargers vs. Saints, unsurprisingly, doesn’t have much national appeal.

Coverage of this week’s game is reflected in green on this map from 506 Sports. See if you’ll catch the broadcast from your local FOX affiliate station:

Rookie Saints QB will have his best supporting cast in Week 8

Spencer Rattler is finally getting a stronger supporting cast in what will likely be his last start. The Saints’ rookie QB must make the most of this opportunity:

Week 8 is probably Spencer Rattler’s last start of the season, barring any setbacks or another injury to starting quarterback Derek Carr. It’s also the first time to get a real evaluation of Rattler.

The New Orleans Saints’ injury woes have been a frequent topic of discussion and the biggest losses have been on the offensive side of the ball. Rattler has played both of his starts without starting offensive linemen Erik McCoy, Lucas Patrick and Cesar Ruiz.

Rattler played with star wideout Chris Olave for just three snaps, and he only had Rashid Shaheed for a game. Do-it-all tight end/fullback Taysom Hill hasn’t taken the field during Rattler’s short run as starter.

Outside of McCoy and Shaheed, all of those pieces are coming back this week. For the first time, fans will see Rattler with multiple reliable weapons and, hopefully, consistent protection.

It’s one thing for a veteran to play without some of these pieces. That’s a rough position to put an experienced passer in. It’s even a bigger challenge to ask a rookie to start his career with an empty cabinet.

Rattler’s stretch of starts may end Sunday with Carr expected back next  week. Luckily for him, it’s his best chance at showcasing his potential before Carr returns.

Will the Broncos trade for any more Saints players?

Broncos coach Sean Payton has already traded draft picks for Wil Lutz and Adam Trautman. Will he add any more Saints players?

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has eight former New Orleans Saints players on his current squad. Two of those players were acquired via trades.

During his first draft with the team, Payton (and general manager George Paton) agreed to trade a sixth-round pick to the Saints in exchange for tight end Adam Trautman and a seventh-round pick in April 2023.

Four months later, the Broncos traded a seventh-round pick to New Orleans in exchange for kicker Wil Lutz. Trautman’s production has been modest in Denver, but Lutz was a key addition as he is 17-of-18 on field goal attempts this season.

So, with the NFL’s trade deadline (Nov. 5) drawing closer, will the Broncos trade for any more Saints in 2024?

The biggest name bantied about is running back Alvin Kamara, but he seems unlikely to move after signing a two-year extension.

Another popular name often linked to Payton is Taysom Hill, a do-everything tight end who Payton discovered on the NFL’s waiver wire in 2017. Hill is probably a more realistic target than Kamara, but his contract could complicate a potential move.

A third name to keep an eye on could be tight end Foster Moreau. He arrived in New Orleans after Payton left, but Moreau has 11 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns this season. He would lead Denver’s tight ends in all three categories if he posted those numbers with the Broncos this fall.

We’ll see if Payton adds to his collection of former Saints in the coming weeks. We will track all of Denver’s potential moves on Broncos Wire.

Saints welcome back some reinforcements on final injury report vs. Chargers

The Saints welcomed back some reinforcements on the final injury report vs. Chargers. Taysom Hill, Chris Olave, and Pete Werner are good to go:

The New Orleans Saints welcomed back some reinforcements on the final injury report for Week 8’s road game with the Los Angeles Chargers. Tight  end/fullback Taysom Hill (rib), wide receiver Chris Olave (concussion), and  linebacker Pete Werner (hamstring) are good to go, and so are starting offensive linemen Cesar Ruiz (knee) and Lucas Patrick (chest).

All told, of the 14 players on this week’s injury report just two won’t be playing after being preemptively ruled out — backup guard Nick Saldiveri (shoulder) and wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. (hip). Starting quarterback Derek Carr (oblique) is questionable to return to action, but we knew he was probably another week away already.

It’s the best injury report the Saints have had all season. Let’s see if it makes a difference after this five-game losing skid.

Several key Saints offensive players upgraded on Week 8 injury report

Chris Olave, Taysom Hill, and Cesar Ruiz were among the players upgraded to full practice reps on the new Saints-Chargers injury report:

There’s more good news on Thursday’s New Orleans Saints injury report. Offensive playmakers including wide receiver Chris Olave, tight end/fullback Taysom Hill, and starting right guard Cesar Ruiz were among the players upgraded to full practice reps ahead of Week 8’s game with the Los Angeles Chargers.

That means just a few players continued to miss practice (starting quarterback Derek Carr and left guard Nick Saldiveri were joined  by veteran wideout Cedrick Wilson Jr., dealing with a hip injury) and five more were limited. Six players practiced fully while receiving treatment for their injuries, which at least feels like the most in weeks.

Here’s the full injury report. We’ll get game statuses on Friday, but things are trending up for the black and gold:

Saints would be picking top-6 if the 2025 NFL draft started today

The Saints would be picking top-six if the 2025 NFL draft started today. But it’s tough to see them stay there. When healthy, they might be too talented to fail:

The New Orleans Saints would be picking at No. 6 overall if the 2025 NFL draft started today, having fallen into a 2-5 start to their season after a five-week losing streak. The latest projections from Tankathon have the Saints making their pick awful early, but that could change depending on Monday night’s results. The Buccaneers-Ravens game won’t impact them much, but a Cardinals loss could push the Saints down to No. 7 (while a Chargers loss doesn’t move the needle).

But it’s tough to see them stay there. When healthy, they might be too talented to fail. The Saints showed what they can do with all hands on deck in the first two weeks of thee season, outscoring their opponents by a wider margin than anyone else around the league. Then they lost two close games to good teams. Attrition continued, and then they got run off their own field in back-to-back losses.

There’s a lot to be said for going in the tank, locking up a valuable draft pick, and using it to address a key position of need — landing a surefire rookie quarterback would be transformative, and the game’s best pass rushers and pass protectors can be found earliest in the draft, too.

Just don’t count on it. The Saints are slowly getting healthier. Veteran linebacker Pete Werner is expected back soon, and so is starting quarterback Derek Carr. Other offensive playmakers like right guard Cesar Ruiz and tight end/fullback Taysom Hill are returning soon, too. Eventually Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy will resume his place in the middle of the line. Even if they’re bruised or older (or both), this Saints team has too much talent on both sides of the ball to lose five more in a row.

And that’s been their story with Dennis Allen at head coach. In each of his three years they’ve gone into Week 8 with records of 2-4, 3-3, and 2-4, only to figure some things out and rebound in the second half. By Week 13 they’ve been 4-8 and 5-6. By season’s end they were 7-10 and 9-8. Not bad enough for a pick at the top of the draft to rebuild, but not good enough for the playoffs.

It’s a concerning pattern. You figure something has to give eventually. They’ll either get over the hump, fully collapse, or the front office’s patience with Allen will give out. If recent history is any indication, general manger Mickey Loomis, team president Dennis Lauscha, and team owner Gayle Benson aren’t in any great rush to blow things up and start over.

Saints star playmaker still remains in NFL concussion protocol

New Orleans Saints star playmaker Chris Olave still remains in the NFL concussion protocol. This is his third brain injury in three years as a pro:

The New Orleans Saints bought a couple extra days of rest after their Thursday night game with the Denver Broncos, but Chris Olave is still dealing with symptoms from a concussion he suffered earlier against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Monday that Olave is still progressing through the NFL’s concussion protocol ahead of this week’s game with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Allen explained that league rules prohibit him from sharing too many details: “He’s in the protocol, he’s progressing in the protocol, we’re going to take those steps as defined by the league, and then we’ll go from there.”

This isn’t the first time Olave has suffered a concussion. As a rookie in 2022, he exited Week 9’s game midway through and wasn’t cleared to play a week later. Then in 2023 he was ruled out in Week 12, but he did play in their game the next week. Even with extra rest after a Thursday night game, he’s not a lock to return this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

These are serious brain injuries, and everyone experiences different rates of recovery. Sometimes a player can clear protocol in a week. Sometimes it takes a month for symptoms to recede. Taysom Hill missed two games and 24 days recovering from a concussion back in 2021.

The team will get back on the practice field on Wednesday. When doctors are confident Olave can compete on the field without endangering his health, he’ll be out there.
