Every No. 11 overall pick in NFL draft since 2000

With the Titans owning the No. 11 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, we take a look back at every selection in that spot since 2000.

With the Tennessee Titans owning the No. 11 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, we thought it would be fun to go back and look at the history of selections in that specific draft spot.

Tennessee has picked from No. 11 overall before, with the last time being in 2014 when the team chose Taylor Lewan out of Michigan to be its franchise left tackle.

The selection paid dividends, as Lewan helped give the franchise personality and attitude, while also proving to be one of the better left tackles in the NFL before running into some injury issues at the tail end of his tenure.

Now, a look at Lewan and the rest of the No. 11 overall picks in the NFL draft, dating back to 2000.

Note: An asterisk denotes at least one Pro Bowl appearance, a plus sign denotes at least one All-Pro nod, and “HOF” means the player has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Taylor Lewan, Dave Portnoy enter Oilers-Titans-Texans debate

Former Titans LT Taylor Lewan wasn’t having it when Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said Houston should have the Oilers.

After it was revealed the Tennessee Titans were going to wear their Houston Oilers throwbacks for a home game in 2023, it re-ignited a debate that really shouldn’t even be one in the first place.

Many Texans fans out there believe their team should have the rights to the Oilers because of their location, even though the Texans were NEVER the Oilers at any point in history.

In fact, the Titans were even the Oilers for two years after moving to Tennessee.

Still, that doesn’t stop the takes like the one Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy put out recently. However, the Titans have a big voice backing them up, with former left tackle Taylor Lewan swooping in to shoot down the take.

This is something people just need to let go of.

Not only were the Titans the Oilers, but founder Bud Adams’ daughter, Amy Adams Strunk, still owns the franchise and cares deeply about its Houston roots, so she isn’t letting go of the Oilers.

If that isn’t enough, even Oilers greats like Warren Moon and Robert Brazile see the Titans as the link to their past, not the Texans.

“I’d have to say here, I’d have to say Nashville, Tennessee,” Moon said of where the Oilers’ history lies. “That’s where our legacy went.”

“Bud (Adams) and his wife, they raised good children,” Brazile said. “Amy is a mother. When a mother reaches out to take care of her children, I feel like I’m a part of her family. She reached out for us and reached out to us to warm us to another new home. So, we may be Oilers, but I think we’re going to all die Titans.”

Enough said.

Taylor Lewan appears to be eyeing Chiefs as potential destination

Taylor Lewan certainly took notice after the Chiefs didn’t franchise tag Orlando Brown.

The Kansas City Chiefs decided not to place the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown, which no doubt caught the attention of former Titans left tackle and current free agent, Taylor Lewan.

With no franchise tag, Brown will hit free agency and is expected to make a killing with a new contract. And, chances are the Chiefs won’t be the team giving it to him it.

As a result, Kansas City will likely be in the market for a new left tackle, and it appears Lewan is interested in filling that void. The morning after Brown wasn’t tagged, the former first-round pick tweeted this:

If Lewan doesn’t retire, something he said is on the table, he figures to be on the radar of plenty of teams this offseason, but there will be plenty of hesitation in signing him, also.

That’s because the 31-year-old hasn’t been able to stay on the field in recent years. He’s suffered a pair of torn ACLs since 2020, and in all has played in just 20 of a possible 50 games in that span, making depending on him as a starter a risky proposition.

As for the Titans, who are in the market for a left tackle after cutting Lewan, the Chiefs not franchise tagging Brown is good news, as it gives Tennessee a free-agent option who can be a long-term solution at the position.

Is Taylor Lewan’s tweet a sign of things to come for Chiefs in free agency?

Could Taylor Lewan’s tweet be an indication of things to come for the #Chiefs in free agency?

After the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV, the predominant thought was that the team would be able to attract a lot of veteran free agents who wanted to win a ring. They added a few pieces, but for the most part, they attempted to run it back with the guys they had. Now that the Chiefs have won their second Super Bowl in the last four seasons, could we see a resurgence in that train of thought?

With the news of the Chiefs’ decision to let Orlando Brown Jr. test his market in free agency, they’ve already seemingly attracted the interest of one player. On Wednesday, former Tennessee Titans LT Taylor Lewan tweeted at the team with the eyeball emoji. Check it out:

While this more than likely will amount to nothing (learn more about Lewan here), it might be proof of the Chiefs’ plan for the upcoming free agency period. In a free agent class without a lot of star power, K.C. can attract some recently-released veterans who won’t impact the compensatory pick formula, but also fill some of those recently “created” needs ahead of the draft.

Veterans around the league have seen players like Carlos Dunlap come to Kansas City and win a championship in the twilight of his career. That came after Dunlap never once won a playoff game in the 12 seasons prior. It makes the Chiefs that much more of an attractive destination for veterans who are looking to finish their careers on high note.

4 Titans make The Ringer’s top 100 free agents list

Four Titans made the cut on The Ringer’s top 100 free agents list.

In a recent list from The Ringer ranking the top 100 players set to hit free agency this offseason, four Tennessee Titans made the cut.

According to The Ringer’s Sheil Kapadia, linebacker David Long (No. 27), left tackle Taylor Lewan (No. 51), right guard Nate Davis (No. 62) and tight end Austin Hooper (No. 79) were all listed.

Of course, Lewan is now a former Titan after the team cut him recently, but we’ll include him anyway. There is also a possibility Lewan returns to Nashville, something the team hasn’t closed the door on.

Here’s what Kapadia had to say about each of the Titans he listed:

Taylor Lewan honors Jerome Boger’s retirement in the best way

Ex-Titans LT Taylor Lewan shared a legendary 2018 video of him cussing out Jerome Boger in honor of the referee’s retirement.

The NFL revealed on Thursday that a slew of referees were announcing their retirement from the league, and I quickly scrolled through looking for one name in particular.

That name was Jerome Boger, the NFL referee who has been the bane of the Tennessee Titans’ — and really, the rest of the league’s — existence over his 19 seasons on the job.

Boger and his crew had become infamous for getting calls wrong on the regular, something the Titans were no doubt victims of. In fact, we’ve so lovingly referred to getting screwed by him and his crew as “Boger’d.”

Upon learning of Boger’s retirement, former Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan shared a 2018 video of him cursing out the veteran official and his crew following a narrow victory over the New York Jets.

“It’s frustrating, man,” Lewan said after the game. “It’s frustrating with some of those calls… There were just some absolutely ridiculous calls.”

For his outburst, Lewan was fined by the league, but the moment will go down as one of the greats when it comes to player interactions with refs.

NFL officiating can be a dumpster fire at times, and Boger was definitely one of the faces of that. While we definitely wish him the best in retirement, the league’s officiating is now at least a bit better off.

Taylor Lewan: Don’t overreact to how Titans dropped off my stuff

Taylor Lewan said the Titans did exactly what he asked when the team dropped off his belongings at his front door.

On Monday, former Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan posted a picture to social media showing how the team dropped off his stuff after being cut last week.

The picture showed three garbage bags full of Lewan’s belongings were dropped off at his front door, with Lewan thanking the team for doing so.

Shout out to the Titans dropping my stuff off today,” Lewan tweeted. “They even let me keep the shoulder pads.”

Some took it as a sign of disrespect, but on Wednesday, Lewan took to social media and clarified in a video that the Titans did exactly what he asked them to do and told fans not to overreact to it.

Lewan, who was cut with a failed physical designation as he continues to recover from a torn ACL, said the Titans treated him very well and even let him choose when he’d be cut. He was complimentary of head coach Mike Vrabel and general manager Ran Carthon, as well.

Vrabel reiterated on Tuesday that the Titans haven’t closed the door on a reunion with Lewan down the road, but that the left tackle would have to get healthy from his knee injury first before that conversation can take place.

Titans dropped off Taylor Lewan’s belongings at his front door

After cutting him this past week, the Titans saved Taylor Lewan the trip and dropped off his stuff at his front door.

Former Tennessee Titans offensive tackle, Taylor Lewan, was unsurprisingly one of the recent cap casualties the team had to make before the new league year.

After spending the last nine years in Nashville, the team ultimately parted ways with their longtime left tackle following a disappointing 2022 season that saw him tear his ACL for the second time in three years.

Despite his impressive tenure that saw the Michigan product become one of the best left tackles in Titans history, his recent Twitter post shows just how cold of a business the NFL can be at times.

It appears as if the Titans essentially packed up Lewan’s locker for him and just dropped off all of his belongings outside of his house. But, hey, at least the Titans saved him the trip, and he got to keep the shoulder pads, also.

There is a chance that this may be a joke considering Lewan’s playful nature, but until he says otherwise, we will have to take this picture as proof of the Titans’ savagery.

Taylor Lewan mentions Bengals as he heads to free agency

A big-name free agent brought up the Bengals as a possibility.

In a dramatic change from a few years ago, Cincinnati Bengals fans now get to watch as major free agents have serious interest in their team.

After one trip to the Super Bowl, a near-miss on another and projection that suggest more to come, the Bengals have morphed into one of the more notable destinations for veterans looking to go out and win rings.

That would apparently include recently released Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan.

On an episode of “Bussin’ With The Boys,” Lewan brought up the Bengals as a team that needs a left tackle while talking about his potential next destination (starts around the six-minute mark).

While breaking down the fit right after Lewan’s release, we noted that the price tag and his injury woes in past years make it a tough sell for the Bengals. The Bengals still really like Jonah Williams at left tackle, too. If the team spends on the offensive line, it might be on the right side where La’el Collins had a so-so year and is now recovering from a season-ending injury.

Still, this is just another example of how turning the whole program around and starting to win consistently makes the Bengals a super attractive destination for free agents.

Grades for Titans cutting Lewan, Bullock, Cunningham, Woods

A grade for each of the Titans’ four roster cuts on Wednesday.

The Tennessee Titans began the process of cutting players on Wednesday with the releases of left tackle Taylor Lewan, linebacker Zach Cunningham, wide receiver Robert Woods and kicker Randy Bullock.

With the four cuts, the Titans will save a grand total of about $37.8 million, putting them under the salary cap by $12.4 million, per Over the Cap. The dead-cap hits for Woods, Bullock and Cunningham total $7.6 million.

As we outlined on Thursday, the Titans might part ways with three others in the near future, a list that includes outside linebacker Bud Dupree, offensive lineman Jamarco Jones, and quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

But for now, we’re looking back at Tennessee’s recent cuts and giving a grade for each (note: grades range from “A” to “F”, there are no “+” or “-” grades).
