Colts’ Jack Doyle fined $10K for unnecessary roughness

Colts TE Jack Doyle was fined $10,815 for unnecessary roughness.

Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle was fined $10,815 for unnecessary roughness against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.

Though he wasn’t penalized for it, Doyle was seen pushing Ravens cornerback Tavon Young’s head after a play was already over. Young retaliated by shoving Doyle and was penalized but not fined.

Even Ravens safety DeShon Elliott took to Twitter to defend his teammate.

The move was extremely uncharacteristic by Doyle, who is mostly a reserved player. There is a bit of history, though, from the 2020 season when Elliott delivered a cheap shot to Doyle’s helmet that wound up forcing him from the game.

Elliott was fined for the hit on Doyle, who was a defenseless receiver on a throw over the middle.

It isn’t clear if that played a role in Doyle’s head push of Young, but he’ll be slapped with a hefty fine for it.

Ravens S Deshon Elliott sticks up for CB Tavon Young on Twitter

Ravens safety DeShon Elliott stuck up for cornerback Tavon Young on Twitter

The Baltimore Ravens were able to come back from 19 points down in the late-third quarter and defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-25 in a thrilling Week 5 contest. Baltimore looked sluggish for the first three quarters, but ended up fighting until the end, moving to 4-1 on the 2021 season.

It was a game that was filled with mistakes for the Ravens, one of which almost cost them the contest. Cornerback Tavon Young was flagged for a personal foul penalty with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter, as he shoved Indianapolis tight end Jack Doyle to the ground. However, Young’s reaction was warranted, as Doyle pushed the cornerback’s head into the field after the play.

Officials usually only see the second guy on sequences like the one between Doyle and Young. Even though it should have absolutely been Doyle who received the penalty, Young can’t react like he did if he wants to help the Ravens win football games. The cornerback owned up to his mistake after the game.

Many around Baltimore are furious with what Doyle did, and rightfully so. One of the people who took exception was Ravens safety DeShon Elliott, who defended Young with a message on Twitter, making it very clear that the tight end’s actions will not be tolerated.

The Baltimore organization is one big family, and sticking up for one another is a big part of what they do. The team stands by each other through thick and thin, and Elliott’s tweet only further shows how great the Ravens’ culture is.

Ravens release final injury report for Week 3 matchup vs. Lions

The Ravens released their final injury report ahead of their Week 3 game against the Detroit Lions

The Baltimore Ravens have seen injuries become a big part of their 2021 season so far. The team currently has 15 players on injured reserve, including multiple key contributors that include running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, as well as cornerback Marcus Peters.

On Friday, Baltimore released their final injury report before their Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions. The list features quite a few players, and the Ravens have already ruled two of their guys out in offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley and defensive lineman Derek Wolfe. However, the team did give positive news on a few of their players both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Good news for Baltimore from Friday’s injury report includes the fact that quarterback Lamar Jackson returned to practice after missing Thursday’s session with an illness. People began to speculate that Jackson’s absence was because of his flip into the endzone during Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs, but that was not the case.

Safety DeShon Elliott also returned to practice, as he missed both Wednesday and Thursday while dealing with a concussion. It’s unclear as to how far he’s gotten in the NFL’s concussion protocol or if he’s passed it altogether, but his return is a good sign for his availability for Week 3. Marquise Brown also returned to practice in limited fashion, following the same practice pattern as in Week 2, where he played against Kansas City.

Cornerback Jimmy Smith logged his first full practice since suffering an ankle injury in the very early stages of training camp, which means he’s at least trending towards playing against the Lions. Outside linebacker Daelin Hayes and cornerback Tavon Young also logged full sessions, so it appears that they should be good to go for Sunday barring any setbacks.

Both outside linebacker Pernell McPhee and inside linebacker Chris Board were new additions to the injury report of Friday as both did not practice. Hopefully the pair will be able to suit up in Week 3, as Baltimore’s front seven is very thin at the moment.

Ravens release Thursday injury report ahead of Week 3 matchup vs. Lions

The Ravens released their Thursday injury report ahead of their Week 3 game with the Detroit Lions

Injuries have been a key storyline for the Baltimore Ravens so far during the 2021 season. The team has seen 15 players go on injured reserve with some sort of ailment, and even more contributors are dealing with injuries that have held them out of practice or even forced them out of games.

On Thursday, Baltimore released their injury report ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions. Many of the faces from the first injury report of the week remained, but there was an interesting new addition to the list in quarterback Lamar Jackson, who missed practice with what the team describes as an illness.

Before the official injury report was released, many began speculating that Jackson’s absence was related to his flip into the end zone during Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Jackson seemingly joked about his hip being sore on Wednesday, so many took that and ran with it. However, the quarterback looks to just be sick, and appears to not be in any danger of missing Sunday’s game against Detroit.

It’s a good sign that both defensive lineman Brandon Williams and cornerback Tavon Young were able to return to practice on a limited basis. Wide receiver Marquise Brown missed his second straight day of practice with an ankle injury, but he will most likely be good to go for Week 3 if he’s able to turn in at least a limited session on Friday.

DeShon Elliott also missed his second straight day of practice as he deals with a concussion. He will need to pass the NFL’s concussion protocol before returning to practice, and might not be able to suit up on Sunday unless he’s able to pass the series of tests by Friday. Unless offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley and Derek Wolfe are able to return to practice on Friday, it appears that both will miss Sunday’s game against Detroit, as both are dealing with injuries that have forced them to miss at least one game so far during 2021.

Jimmy Smith and Daelin Hayes could both be in line to play their first game of the regular season on Sunday, as both were limited in practice on Thursday.

Ravens release first injury report ahead of Week 3 matchup vs. Lions

The Ravens released their first injury report ahead of their Week 3 matchup with the Detroit Lions

The Baltimore Ravens picked up a massive win against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 of the 2021 season. It was a thrilling victory for Baltimore, as they saw their offensive and defensive units step up when it mattered, as both came up with big plays to secure the big win.

Despite coming off of an emotional victory, the Ravens have pivoted quickly to their Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions. Many expect Baltimore to come out with an easy win, but the Ravens can’t underestimate Detroit or else they could fall into a trap.

Baltimore released their first injury report ahead of Week 3, and the list has many key contributors on it.

There will be more known about the status of the players who appeared on Wednesday’s injury report as the week goes on, but for now there are a few players to watch closely. Elliot, Williams and Young all left the Ravens’ Week 2 win early with injuries, so hopefully each player will be able to recover fully by Sunday afternoon. Stanley missed Week 2 as he continues to recover from his ankle injury so his practice participation should tell a lot about whether he will play in Week 3.

Wolfe and Smith have missed the first two games of the 2021 season, and it seems like Smith is closer to a return than Wolfe. However, either player being available for Week 3 would be a big boost to Baltimore’s defense.

6 winners, 5 losers from Ravens’ 33-27 loss to Raiders in Week 1

We look at winners and losers from the Ravens’ Week 1 loss to the Raiders.

The Baltimore Ravens came out on the losing end of an instant classic during Week 1 of the 2021 season, falling to the Las Vegas Raiders by the final score of 33-27. It was a tough game to lose, and puts Baltimore at 0-1 heading into a big Week 2 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

There were plenty of winners and losers from this game, as the Ravens had multiple positives and negatives to take away from it. Some players performed very well while others had a tough time. It was Week 1, so some sloppiness was expected, but still it was a bit of a surprise to see some struggle as much as they did.

Below we look at five winners and four losers from the Ravens’ opening week loss to the Raiders.

Ravens could have tough decisions to make at the CB position

Ravens could have tough decisions to make at the CB position

The Baltimore Ravens are a team that has been known for their strong secondary over the course of their franchise history. From former ballhawks like Ed Reed and Chris McAlister to current players such as Marlon Humphrey and Jimmy Smith, opposing teams have had to account for years of talent at the position.

Heading into the 2021 season, Baltimore has plenty of players ready to contribute and make an impact in their secondary. However, that could mean that the team will have to make some tough decisions when it’s time to cut the roster down to 53 players.

In reality, the Ravens will most likely keep six cornerbacks on their roster. However, that number could fluctuate in either direction based off of needs or injuries elsewhere. If Baltimore does decide to keep six corners, it would make sense for those six to be Humphrey, Smith, Marcus Peters, Tavon Young, Anthony Averett and Shaun Wade.

Those six are extremely talented players, but if no other cornerback makes the roster, it would mean that other roster candidates such as Davontae Harris, Khalil Dorsey, Chris Westry and others would be on the outside looking in. Harris and Dorsey both showed flashes with Baltimore in 2020, while Westry is an intriguing young player.

Even if the Ravens do have to part with a few talented players during cut day, they should be able to add a few cornerbacks with potential to their practice squad. Baltimore has not been fortunate over the last few seasons with injuries in their secondary, but hopefully 2021 will bring much more good fortune and the team will stay flush with healthy talent at the cornerback position.

John Harbaugh ‘looking forward’ to competition at cornerback

The Baltimore Ravens are set to have a huge training camp battle at cornerback. John Harbaugh says he’s looking forward to it

The Baltimore Ravens have a lot of depth at multiple different positions in 2021. Depth is always a good thing, but it can cause some tough decisions to have to be made when it’s time to cut the roster down to 53 players.

One of the deepest positions on Baltimore’s roster right now is cornerback. They have a mix of top-end talent as well as promising young guys, which makes their secondary dangerous. When asked about the heated competition that will ensue over the next couple of weeks, head coach John Harbaugh said that he’s “looking forward” to it.

“I think that’s a good term – heated. [I expect it to be] absolutely heated. I think [pass game coordinator/secondary] Coach [Chris] Hewitt and [defensive backs] Coach [D’Anton] Lynn have done a tremendous job with those guys throughout the course of the whole offseason, and those guys have responded very well. So, I’m looking forward to that competition that you’re talking about in training camp. It’s a very talented group, and the best players will be the guys that play the best. I can’t wait to watch it play out.”

It seems like the Ravens already have six cornerbacks who are locks to make their roster in Marlon Humphrey, Marcus Peters, Jimmy Smith, Tavon Young, Anthony Averett, and Shaun Wade. However, if the team does decide to keep only six at the position, that would mean talent players like Davontae Harris, Iman Marshall, Khalil Dorsey and other would be on the outside looking in.

As training camp and the preseason progress, certain players will begin to separate themselves from others as they fight for roster spots. However, with Baltimore already looking like they have their top six cornerbacks, it could be an uphill but fierce battle for any other available spots at the position.

Shaun Wade has the potential to do big things with the Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens drafted Shaun Wade with the 171st overall pick in the 2021 draft. He has the potential to be a big steal for Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens feel like they were able to secure a phenominal 2021 draft class. Headlined by players like Rashod Bateman and Odafe Oweh, the team drafted for need while also taking talented players in the process.

One player who has the potential to be an absolute steal for Baltimore is cornerback Shaun Wade. The former Ohio State defensive back was selected by the Ravens with the 171st overall pick in the draft. He suffered a massive fall in the 2021 draft as opposed to where he would have gone in 2020 due to an interesting story.

Wade originally decided to return to Ohio State after having a fabulous 2019 season from the slot. Many slotted him in as a first or second round selection in the 2020 draft. However, he wanted to play for his school and hoped to improve his draft stock in the process. After the Coronavirus pandemic swept over the world, he opted out of the 2020 college football season, only to reverse that decision a few months later. The choices he made did not go as planned.

The former Buckeye struggled immensely during the 2020 season after moving from the slot to the outside. He effectively tanked his draft in doing so, which put Baltimore in the position to select him in the fifth round of the 2021 draft instead of potentially much higher just one year ago.

Despite losing out on being a Day 1 or even a Day 2 selection, Wade’s fall might have been a blessing in a disguise for all parties. It’s believed that the cornerback is viewed as a slot option by the Ravens, which is where Wade is at his strongest. He also will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best cornerbacks in the league including Marlon Humphrey, Marcus Peters, Jimmy Smith, and even Tavon Young. That should help him be able to hone in on his skills while not being pressured by playing significant snaps early unless there are a plethora of injuries.

Being selected in the fifth round will most likely motivate Wade to prove the teams that passed on him wrong. He’ll work to be the best cornerback he can be, and it’s arguable that he couldn’t have landed in a better spot than Baltimore. There’s no denying his ability, and with him most likely moving back inside, he has the potential to be one of the biggest steals of the 2021 draft.

Ravens select Shaun Wade with No. 160 overall pick in 2021 draft

The Baltimore Ravens have three fifth-round picks in the 2021 NFL draft, and with their first fifth-round selection at No. 160 they took cornerback Shaun Wade out of Ohio State University.

Wade saw his draft stock plummet in 2020 after having a great few seasons as a nickel cornerback. In 2020 he moved outside and struggled, and subsequently fell to Baltimore at No. 160.

With Tavon Young suffering three season-ending injuries in five years, drafting slot cornerback depth was a priority, especially if they didn’t want to risk moving Marlon Humphrey back inside in the event of Young going down.

Wade has plenty of potential at the next level. He could also see time at free safety, but the Ravens will probably look to develop him as a slot option.
