Former Michigan basketball C Tarris Reed selects transfer destination

Best of luck to him. #GoBlue

While many may proclaim that Michigan basketball needed to clean house in terms of the roster after the Wolverines posted the worst-ever season record of 8-24, clearly, some of the outgoing talent is of a high caliber.

Such is the case of one of the two players that the maize and blue had certainly hoped to keep. Point guard Dug McDaniel was one of them, and he ended up transferring to Kansas State. The other, center Tarris Reed, has finally decided on his destination of choice.

Announced by On3’s Joe Tipton, Reed is joining the reigning national champions as he has committed to transfer to UConn.

While the Wolverines are trending for FAU big man Vlad Goldin, it’s still a blow to lose one of the best players you already had on campus to a team that has won the last two national championships.

For now, new head coach Dusty May has his work cut out for him in terms of recruiting the transfer portal. There are multiple players, like Goldin, who appear likely to end up wearing maize and blue, but none have pulled the trigger as of yet in the short tenure of May’s reign.

UCLA reaches out to Michigan transfer Tarris Reed

UCLA in contact with Michigan transfer Tarris Reed.

The transfer portal is busy and the UCLA Bruins are wasting no time after missing out on the NCAA Tournament. They have already reached out to a handful of players, including Rutgers big man Cliff Omuruyi.

Now, they have also been in contact with Michigan transfer Tarris Reed, per Joe Tipton of On3. Reed has also heard from the following schools: Georgetown, Arkansas, Kansas State, Providence, Ole Miss, Pitt, Mizzou, Penn State, Oregon, Northwestern, Boise State, Davidson, Miss State, loan, Memphis, LSU, Nebraska, Xavier, Memphis, and SMU.

The talented sophomore averaged nine points with 7.2 rebounds for the Wolverines. Michigan moved on from Juwan Howard after the season but then hired Florida Atlantic head coach Dusty May as his replacement over the weekend, so it will be interesting to see if May can convince Reed to stay in Ann Arbor.

The Michigan big man would be a huge addition for UCLA for next year and beyond.

Michigan basketball loses another big player to the transfer portal

Well, this one sucks. #GoBlue

The hits keep coming for Michigan basketball.

With Juwan Howard out as the Wolverines head coach, there was bound to be attrition. But the maize and blue are seeing star players depart before they learn who the new head coach will be in Ann Arbor.

On Sunday, Michigan lost guard George Washington III, a freshman who played very little. On Monday, the Wolverines lost star point guard Dug McDaniel, perhaps the biggest blow to the current roster.

The situation grew even worse on Tuesday when star center Tarris Reed Jr. revealed he was joining the duo in the transfer portal.

Michigan also lost its top-ranked commit in the 2024 class. Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy four-star forward Khani Rooths decommitted from the class.

There’s no telling what the roster may look like in 2024-25 under a new head coach. Given the current squad had a program-worst record of 8-24, perhaps that’s not such a bad thing, but it would be a benefit if the few bright spots from the last year returned.

Tom Izzo has already assembled quite the 2022 recruiting class for Michigan State Basketball with the addition of 5-stars Emoni Bates and Enoch Boakye (although both players could still reclassify to 2021). It doesn’t look like Izzo is content to rest on his laurels and is still out on the recruiting trail recruiting high-level talent for the 2022 class. The latest recruiting target for Izzo is 4-star St. Louis power forward Tarris Reed Jr. out of Chaminade High School.

Tarris Reed is a 6’10”, 230 lbs forward and the top player in the state of Missouri for 2022. He is a top 100 player who is ranked No. 16 at his position by the 247Sports rankings.

Reed’s head coach at Chaminade Frank Bennett had this to say about the star power forward:

“Tarris is a load, he can score down low, he’s very physical and to be honest with you he’s just scratching the surface which is really exciting,” he told KSDK in St. Louis.

Reed announced the offer on Thursday night. You can check out his highlights here.

Reed already has additional offers out from Creighton, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Saint Louis, Xavier, and Kansas, and you can expect more to roll in as his recruitment heats up.
