Bills at Dolphins: Taron Johnson already ruled out due to injury

#Bills at #Dolphins: Taron Johnson already ruled out due to injury:

The injury news was both good and bad for the Buffalo Bills following their season-opening win against the Arizona Cardinals.

Following the 31-28 win, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott announced that quarterback Josh Allen (left hand) will play in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. The same cannot be said for cornerback Taron Johnson.

Johnson, 28, sustained a forearm injury on the opening drive of the season for the Bills defense. He did not return to action and will not in Miami, either.

“With Taron, I don’t know his timeline on when he’ll be back,” McDermott said via video conference on Monday. “So, we’re still doing some further research on that.”

When Johnson departed against the Cards, Cam Lewis came in at nickel cornerback.

Lewis notched nine tackles against Arizona and was praised for his efforts. It’s anticipated that Lewis will start in place of Johnson against the Dolphins.

On Johnson, McDermott did not indicate a timeline of how much time he will miss.

McDermott’s full injury analysis can be found in the WKBW-TV clip below:

Bills’ Taron Johnson questionable to return vs. Cardinals

#Bills’ Taron Johnson questionable to return vs. #Cardinals:

The Buffalo Bills are without one of their most important defenders early on against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

During Buffalo’s first drive of the season on defense, Johnson went down with an injury. The team announced that Johnson sustained a forearm problem and is questionable to return:

Johnson was spotted being attended to by medical staff on Buffalo’s sideline. The Bills’ top nickel defender had his arm taped but ended up heading to the locker room, according to reports.

In Buffalo’s defensive scheme, the nickel position is a full-time starting job. The Bills consistently only lineup with two linebackers which makes Johnson’s loss even larger.

Josh Allen, Bills downplay ‘no game planning’ loss vs. Bears

Josh Allen and the #Bills downplay ‘no game planning’ loss vs. the #Bears:

Worried about the Buffalo Bills’ loss to the Chicago Bears in the preseason?

Well, you might not have to. Just ask the team, because they were not concerned much, at all, following the 33-6 final.

Throughout the Bills locker room at Highmark Stadium on Saturday afternoon, despite the loss, there was calm to be found. It came from both sides of the ball and for the exact same reasoning.

The Bills did not treat the Bears like a regular season opponent. The preparation for the matchup did not exist as it would during the season.

“There’s… no game planning whatsoever,” cornerback Taron Johnson said via video conference. “We go out there pretty blind, honestly.”

Meanwhile, the franchise quarterback echoed the same sentiment.

“Felt good with what we did early on,” Allen said. “every game is something we want to win. A lot to learn from. Again, it’s preseason, we’re not game planning for games.”

So if you trust your players, Buffalo, there is not much to be worried about… for now.

Contract details for extension Taron Johnson signed with the Bills

Contract details for extension Taron Johnson signed with the #Bills:

The Buffalo Bills signed cornerback Taron Johnson to a contract extension. Some details were already known.

At the time of reporting, it was said Johnson will now be the NFL’s highest-paid slot cornerback. He’s now inked to a deal with the Bills through the 2027 season.

Now we have the full details of the contract.

As the offseason has gone for the Bills, the salary cap played a big part.

Originally slated for a $12.4 million salary cap hit, it’s been lowered by almost $4M to $8.448M according to Over The Cap. Helping there is base salary that dropped down to $1.125M. In addition, there are two void years at the end of Johnson’s deal to spread out the cap hits.

Overall, Johnson signed a three-year, $31M extension.

That $8.44M cap hit is accompanied by a $22.5M dead cap. If the Bills were to release Johnson, it would cost them $22.5M against the cap as opposed to his actual cap hit. That same circumstance can be found in Year 2 of his deal, a $8.16M cap hit is next to a $15.25M dead cap hit.

Following that year, there is a potential out in his contract and Buffalo could release him and save against the cap.

Here’s how those salary cap hits break down (dead cap):

  • 2024: $8.44M ($22.5M)
  • 2025: $8.16M ($15.25M)
  • 2026: $11.06M ($4.35M)
  • 2027: $12.34M ($2.9M)

Bills Wire will continue to bring all roster updates throughout the 2024 offseason.

4 Bills players in line for contract extensions during the 2024 offseason

4 #Bills players in line for contract extensions during the 2024 offseason:

Again this offseason, Buffalo GM Brandon Beane and the front office have their work cut out for them.

This year, in particular, we might see offseason player personnel decisions ranging from last year’s supplemental short-term free agency additions to what could prove to be another asset packing and NFL Draft board movement masterclass to go up and get cost-controlled impact talent.

The Bills are among the teams with favorable Super Bowl odds ahead of their 2024 NFL season, this before they settle their roster via free agency and the draft.

While a number of players on the Buffalo roster are free agents, others may be up for contract restructuring or extensions.

Those extensions could be beneficial to players and the team alike, in that inking those new deals could also mean creating needed salary cap space for free-agency and draft timeframes.

With that here are four Bills players who could be in line for a contract extension this offseason:

Bills’ Taron Johnson on Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer: ‘Hopefully they’re here’ next year

#Bills’ Taron Johnson on Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer: ‘Hopefully they’re here’ next year:

The future is unclear for a cornerstone of the Buffalo Bills roster.

The Bills hired head coach Sean McDermott and eventually general manager Brandon Beane in 2017. In terms of player leadership, the safety tandem of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer were the duo that quickly filled that role.

“Micah and Jordan (Poyer). When you say one, you have to say the other, right? McDermott said via video conference.

Now, the future for them is unclear. Hyde’s is very up in the air. He’s slated to be a free agent this offseason.

“I just have no idea what the future holds right now,” Hyde said at locker cleanout day after the Bills’ playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. “We’ll see. I’m in no rush. No rush at all.”

Poyer is under contract for one more season. The Bills would take on $2 million in dead cap if he’s released but Buffalo could clear near $5.5M in salary cap space. The team is estimated to be near $50M over the 2024 over the salary cap, according to Over The Cap.

As one could expect, teammates in the Bills locker room aren’t too concerned about all that. They know it’s a business. But the bonds between players is stronger than that and Taron Johnson showed it.

Johnson, who has played in Buffalo since 2018, hopes both are back and that all comes down to relationships built.

“Hopefully they’re here,” Johnson said.

Johnson discussing his teammates can be found in the News 8 clip below:

Bills at Dolphins: Key matchups to watch in Week 18

#Bills at #Dolphins: Key matchups to watch in Week 18:

The Buffalo Bills will visit the Miami Dolphins in their upcoming Week 18 matchup at Hard Rock Stadium.

The two teams have been rigorously preparing for the contest throughout the past week. Buffalo (10-6) and Miami (11-5) will think they know their upcoming opponent, inside and out, after all the practicing and studying they have put in.

Because of that, despite all the off-field talking, speculation and discussion, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference when it comes to the final outcome of this upcoming weekend.

With that, here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Dolphins contest:

Two Bills players fined for actions vs. Chargers in Week 16

A clip of the more questionable one:

Two Buffalo Bills players were fined by the NFL for plays against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16.

In the 24-22 win for the Bills (9-6), offensive lineman Spencer Brown and cornerback Taron Johnson were dinged by the NFL.

Brown was flagged for a tripping penalty which seemed like the right call at the time even though the flag negated a first down on a pass from quarterback Josh Allen to running back James Cook. Brown has since additionally been fined $7,159 for that penalty.

Johnson’s was the more questionable one that happened against the Chargers (5-10). He was slapped with a $21,855 fine for an unnecessary roughness hit. From the moment it happened, it was a borderline call.

Johnson’s penalty can be found in the clip below:
