UNC women’s basketball lands five-star player in 2025 class

The Class of 2025 just got that much better as UNC basketball landed this five-star wing from Virginia.

Just a few weeks ago, UNC women’s basketball signed Taliyah Henderson, a five-star wing and the No. 21 ranked recruit in the Class of 2025. The class was already looking up before another five-star prospect chose Chapel Hill.

From the state of Virginia in Alexandria at Bishop Ireton High School plays the No. 12 recruit in the same class as Henderson. The 6-foot-1 wing committed to play at the University of Tennessee as a sophomore, but she has since changed her mind after the firing of Kellie Harper.

After receiving a ton of offers and narrowing it down to UNC, Tennessee, Maryland, and Georgia, Nyla Brooks officially announced on social media today that she will be committing to North Carolina.

The pair of talent that the Heels now have at the guard position between two top-25 recruits will be dominant for years to come. This also can’t come at a better time with the team set to lose Deja Kelly as well.

Brooks and Henderson will join a roster led by Courtney Banghart and try to bring home another championship to the UNC family.

CBS Sports picks Kansas, Alabama as two most intriguing matchups for UNC

CBS Sports takes a look at Alabama coming into the Dean Smith Center as the highlight of UNC basketball’s schedule.

North Carolina’s non-conference schedule starts with Elon on November 4th and ends with Campbell on December 29th, both at home. CBS Sports picked two games that stand out among the entire non-conference schedule.

Those two notable games that RJ Davis and company will play according to CBS Sports include the road trip to the Jayhawks and the opportunity to see Grant Nelson and the Crimson Tide inside the Dean E. Smith Center.

According to Jeff Borzello from ESPN, Kansas and Alabama are the preseason ranked No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation respectively with North Carolina coming in at No. 10.

Alabama was the team that knocked North Carolina out of the NCAA Tournament last year in the Elite Eight winning the region. Both teams have lost talent and gained talent in the offseason.

Alabama retained Grant Nelson and Mark Spears who led the team last season. They also added two massive transfers Clifford Omoruyi from Rutgers and Christ Youngblood from USF.

Kansas kept Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams while adding Wisconsin transfer, AJ Storr.

Will the addition of Cade Tyson and Ven Allen Lubin paired with Ian Jackson and Drake Powell be enough to stop Bama from beating the Heels, this time at home?

High-profile UNC basketball target set to make decision next week

UNC basketball recruiting target Jasper Johnson announces the timeline of his decision-making.

Just a week ago, the No. 12 overall-ranked player and the No. 2-ranked two-guard in the Class of 2025, Jasper Johnson, was narrowing down his list of teams to just five heading into the final days of his recruitment with UNC basketball on that list.

The Overtime Elite star from Atlanta, Georgia, took an official visit to Chapel Hill on February 2nd. That was the first of his official visits heading straight to Kentucky after North Carolina and four months later visiting Tuscaloosa.

It is worth noting that Johnson came back to the South to visit Hubert Davis and company on an unofficial visit during the summer in the midst of his official visit to Alabama.

According to an On3 insider:

“I was really impressed with his outside shooting and ability to get to the basket and also be very creative when he gets to the basket. His strength is putting the ball in the basket and every team needs that kind of player.”

Johnson is one of the top two recruits left in the Top 15 that UNC is heavily vying for. This would be a massive decision if it went in favor of the Tar Heels and Hubert Davis considering RJ Davis is in his final year and Ian Jackson might be a one-and-done athlete.

Can this UNC basketball transfer be the Breakout Player of the Year?

Can this UNC basketball transfer be the next Breakout Player of the Year?

Sparks started flying this offseason when Hubert Davis and UNC basketball landed Belmont transfer Cade Tyson. It made it especially sweet with the departures of Armando Bacot, Harrison Ingram, and Cormac Ryan.

Is it possible that Tyson could fill all of those shoes in his first year at the program?

In his freshman and sophomore seasons with Belmont, Tyson averaged 13.6 and 16.2 points per game. He also added a career average of 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and almost one steal per game.

He also shot 49% from the field and 46.5% from behind the arc. He has the body to bully down low like Bacot, the versatility of Ingram, and the shooting ability of Ryan. A recipe for success if used right.

Not only can Tyson shoot, but the threat he brings will also open up more opportunities for reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis and facilitator Elliot Cadeau amongst others.

Tyson will battle for time with current Tar Heels Ja’Lynn Withers and Jalen Washington as well as transfer Ven-Allen Lubin. However, with his upside, he should be able to carve that time out.

Four-star UNC basketball recruit reveals list of upcoming visits

This four-star center has set his official visits and UNC basketball made the list.

UNC basketball recruiting has been a buzz around the internet recently. Malachi Moreno announced a date to make his decision, the Tar Heels are in the running for the No. 1 overall player of the class, and the future is bright.

Another bright light put on the recruiting list is Eric Reibe, a 7-foot-0 center from Potomac, Maryland, who released his official visit schedule and UNC basketball made the cut among five other schools.

According to 247sports, Reibe is “warm” with 11 different schools including his current crystal ball location, Creighton. Reibe’s visit tour starts with Kansas before heading to UConn and Kentucky ahead of North Carolina.

After Carolina, he will round it out with Indiana and Oregon.

Depending on the outcome of Moreno’s decision within a short time, Reibe might be a bigger target for UNC needing a center.

Reibe’s ranking has skyrocketed in recent months on Rivals. He wasn’t a top recruit his sophomore year off everyone’s radar. After rising as far as No. 94 in his sophomore season, he ended that year at 109.

Heading into his senior year, he has since risen to his highest rank overall of his life at No. 66. The senior has a plethora of schools to choose from; hopefully, he will become a Tar Heel.

CBS Sports predicts Tar Heels basketball starting lineup for 2024-25

CBS Sports sees these five guys getting the starting nod from Hubert Davis this season.

Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels will enter this season with a National Championship on their minds and in their sights. CBS Sports predicts that RJ Davis will go back-to-back on ACC Player of the Year awards. Is his presence alone enough to bolster this roster to a championship?

Jon Rothstein from CBS Sports has UNC as his No. 1 team coming out of the ACC followed by Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson, and Miami rounding out the conference’s top five according to the analyst.

Rothstein projects the following as North Carolina’s starting lineup this year:

Guard: Elliot Cadeau

Guard: RJ Davis

Guard: Ian Jackson

Forward: Jae’Lyn Withers

Forward: Ven-Allen Lubin

Cadeau and Davis are the only two players staying in the starting five from last year. Jackson is a freshman and the No. 8 overall player in the Class of 2024. Withers served as a role player off the bench last season after transferring from Louisville the offseason prior, and Lubin transferred in from Vanderbilt this offseason.

Don’t forget that depth will be on Hubert Davis’ side as well with the No. 11 overall player in the 2024 class, Drake Powell, coming off the bench. The star power and young talent of this team could be the perfect championship mix.

Two UNC freshmen get leadership opportunity at Lillard’s camp

Two UNC freshmen will get the opportunity to compete again and lead some of the nation’s top high school players this week.

Beginning today, James Brown and Ian Jackson will get an opportunity to be college counselors in Damian Lillard’s Formula Zero Elite Camp. The two UNC freshmen will look to use this opportunity and bring heightened skills back to Chapel Hill both on the court and in their leadership capabilities.

According to Lillard’s website, the camp’s purpose is to take the top 20 high school players in the nation and pair them with the top 20 college counselors in the country.

They will compete with and against each other for the next three days in Phoenix, Arizona.

Lillard also said, “The Formula is not fake or superficial, It is a catalyst for real change.” That is what Tar Heel fans should want to hear about two potential big-impact freshmen.

The opportunity to mentor and lead the next generation of young basketball stars should translate back to their leadership with their peers on the court this season.

Some other notable names joining them as counselors will be Kansas’ AJ Storr, Florida State‘s Jamir Watkins, and Kentucky’s Koby Brea.

There will be several influential high school stars there including Jasper Johnson, a player that UNC has been linked to and highly recruiting in the past couple of weeks among others.

Kentucky trending as leader for UNC Basketball recruiting target

Five-star center, Malachi Moreno, was dubbed with new crystal ball predictions on 247sports.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are watching another four-star recruit that they were “warm” with on 247sports fall out of their grasp. Great Crossing’s Malachi Moreno is the No. 26 ranked player on their composite rankings.

He also is the No. 2 ranked center in the Class of 2025 and the best player coming out of Indiana in the class native to Georgetown, Indiana.

Currently, North Carolina has just four-star James Brown on the roster heading into that season at the center position and no committed center recruits in the class.

Moreno is set to “warm” with seven other programs on 247sports, but there is only one other blue blood on the list. Kentucky is currently the school selected by the crystal ball with a 100% chance of landing Moreno in the coming months.

Moreno is set to visit with all six of the eight “warm” programs in the next two months. He will be in Chapel Hill on September 13th and round out his tour visits with Kentucky on October 11th.

The crystal ball is not a hard commitment so there is still an opportunity for UNC to come back with a great visit. The Tar Heels could use a rim-protecting center like Moreno.

Four-star UNC target adds visit to rival

This four-star is set to visit Duke shortly after his trip to Chapel Hill and UNC.

Class of 2025 four-star shooting guard Braylon Mullins is set to visit the North Carolina Tar Heels in just over a month from now. The No. 23-ranked recruit overall in the class and the No. 5-ranked shooting guard is not the only player on the Tar Heels watch list nor is UNC the only one on his.

He has already visited UConn and is slated to visit Michigan before Chapel Hill and Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky in the month after UNC. With only one blue blood in the mix before today, Duke has risen on the list on 247sports of “warm” with a scheduled visit.

Mullins is a 6-foot-5 dominant presence who is lethal from behind the arc. The Greenfield, Indiana, native averaged 25.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game for Greenfield-Central. He shot 56% from the field and 43% from behind the arc.

North Carolina will have only Class of 2024’s Ian Jackson on the roster for the 2025 season should he stay for his sophomore year. That should not only encourage him to Chapel Hill but should also push North Carolina to pursue him even more.

March Madness experts predict outcome of Alabama vs. North Carolina in Sweet 16

Alabama takes on No. 1 seed North Carolina in the Sweet 16 of March Madness. See which team experts pick to move on to the Elite Eight.

Alabama, the No. 4 seed in the West Region, takes on North Carolina, the top-seeded team in the West Region, in a highly-anticipated Sweet 16 matchup. The lives of each team’s March Madness run and a trip to the Elite Eight is on the line. It’s expected that the Tar Heels will enter the contest as the favorite.

This is the third time in four years that head coach Nate Oats has led the Crimson Tide to the Sweet 16. The circumstances surrounding the team from Tuscaloosa made it seem like making it this far in the tournament was a long shot. High roster turnover and a practically brand new assistant coaching staff did not hinder Alabama in its quest to make a deep March Madness run.

As for North Carolina, the program has high expectations every single year and views the Crimson Tide as nothing more than an obstacle on its way to the Final Four. It will have to come out firing on offense if it wants to compete with the nation’s highest-scoring team.

Recently, ESPN college basketball experts predicted the outcome for each Sweet 16 matchup (subscription required). The panel of three, consisting of John Gasaway, Jeff Borzello, and Myron Medcalf, was split on the Tide vs. Tar Heels.

Gasaway has North Carolina winning with a final score of 90-84, stating, “For all the quite understandable attention paid to Alabama’s 3s, where the Tide really thrived in the SEC this season was inside the arc. Bama connected on a stellar 57% of its 2s, and I just don’t see that happening against Armando Bacot and this excellent UNC defense.”

Medcalf agrees with Gasaway that the Crimson Tide’s season comes to an end in this game, but believes it’s a bit closer, predicting the final score to be 87-83. He argued, “North Carolina, I think, has proved it can play with any team in the field. Really strong defensively. The Heels have an All-American running the show. They have an elite big man. And now Harrison Ingram is hitting 3-pointers again. They can hurt you everywhere. That will demand a defensive level from Alabama that Nate Oats’ squad doesn’t have.”

However, Borzello goes against the grain by selecting Alabama to pull off the win. In a one-possession game, Borzello has the Tide winning 88-86.

“I’m going with the upset here. There are certainly concerns from Alabama’s perspective: Can the Tide keep Armando Bacot off the glass? Can they keep the Heels out of transition and consistently get stops? Alabama hasn’t been the free-flowing offense that buries teams in a barrage of 3-pointers all that often the past few weeks. But if Carolina lets the Tide run, it could be a breakout game.”

The panel is split 2-1, but favors North Carolina. Despite this, Alabama fans should pay close attention to their analysis beyond the projected winner. All three experts have the winner walking away victorious by fewer than 10 points. It is expected to be a close one.

Also worth noting is the fact that all three experts predict both teams to score over 80 points. In a high-scoring affair, it could go either way. However, if the Tide can get shots to fall early and play the high-quality defense the team exhibited against Grand Canyon, it could be Alabama’s game to lose.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Alabama basketball as the team prepares for its Sweet 16 matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels which will be held in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 28 at 9:39 p.m. ET.
