Seahawks shuffle practice squad with two moves for special teams depth

The Seattle Seahawks have made a couple of practice squad moves over the last two days as they begin preparing for their Week 15 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.

Yesterday, the team announced they’d signed wide receiver Matt Cole to the practice squad. Cole (5-foot-10, 200 pounds) is from Chicago and played college ball at Division II school McKendree University. He went undrafted in 2020 and first signed with the Dolphins, then the 49ers. He appeared in one game last season with the Niners and another with Carolina this year, putting in 34 special teams snaps total. Cole gives more depth on speical teams following Gavin Heslop’s season-ending leg injury and surgery.

Seattle is also calling up a defender to the active roster. According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, linebacker Tanner Muse is being signed off the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Muse was one of many recent draft blunders by the Raiders. After they picked him in the third round of the 2020 draft he was released before the season began. He had been elevated from the practice squad twice already this year, so he needed to be signed in order to play. He’s been on the field for 29 snaps, exclusively on special teams.

OL with Clemson ties feels he’d ‘fit right in’ with the Tigers

A big Tar Heel State offensive lineman with a couple of ties to the Clemson football program returned to Tiger Town last weekend for his second visit to Death Valley this season.

After attending the Tigers’ victory over Boston College in October, Belmont (N.C.) South Point 2023 tackle Sullivan Absher was back on campus to see Clemson beat then-No. 10 Wake Forest last Saturday, 48-27.

“I was able to make it down for the Boston College game, which was a (7:30) p.m. game, so I was halfway expecting a bit of a more laid-back environment vs. Wake this week because it was a 12 p.m. kickoff, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!” Absher said to The Clemson Insider. “This game was probably even more energetic than the BC game.”

Absher, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound junior, attends South Point High School – the alma mater of former Clemson All-ACC safety Tanner Muse and current Clemson director of high school relations/special assistant to the offense Kyle Richardson.

The Muse family lives in the neighborhood next to Absher’s family, so they have been family friends for a while, and Absher knows a lot of the same people as Richardson.

Absher spent time with Richardson during Saturday’s visit, as well as offensive analyst Thomas Austin and offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell.

“The biggest thing they were speaking about is how much improvement I make from week to week and being able to adapt to different situations in games,” Absher said of what he heard from the staff. “The coaches also spoke to me about how much of a family the Clemson program is and how they’d love to get me to be a part of it.”

Absher said his second visit to Clemson this season helped him get a better feel for where he stands with the Tigers at this point in the recruiting process.

“One thing about my high school team is that we run the triple option, so we don’t block in the traditional pro-style technique,” he said. “So one thing they’ve told me to improve on is my pass blocking, which I’ve been working on with a trainer every week. So hopefully the offer comes as soon as I can showcase those pass-blocking skills.”

Absher currently owns offers from Wake Forest, North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, East Carolina and Old Dominion.

If the Tigers come calling with an offer of their own, Absher can see himself calling Clemson home in the future.

“It’d be huge to have the opportunity to be a part of such a historic program,” he said, “and now that I have some stronger relationships with some of the coaching staff, it seems like I’d fit right in.”

Absher has also made game-day visits this season to UNC, NC State, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Saturday’s Clemson visit marked his final trip of the season, but he anticipates getting back to Clemson in the spring.

“If an opportunity comes for me to get down to Clemson, I’ll be there,” he said.

Seahawks elevate LB Tanner Muse from practice squad for Packers game

The team just announced that linebacker Tanner Muse has been elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s critical matchup.

The Seattle Seahawks activated Russell Wilson and Dee Eskridge from the injured reserve list ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Green Bay Packers. The team is also calling up one player from the practice squad.

The team just announced that linebacker Tanner Muse has been elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s critical matchup.

Muse (6-foot-2, 227 pounds) was a third-round pick by the Raiders last year but didn’t play as a rookie and was cut before this season started. He played two weeks ago against Jacksonville, putting in 15 snaps on special teams. Expect more of the same against Green Bay.

Seahawks elevate LB Tanner Muse from practice squad for Jaguars game

The Seahawks only made one roster move on Saturday ahead of tomorrow’s home-game against the Jaguars.

The Seahawks only made one roster move on Saturday ahead of tomorrow’s home-game against the Jaguars: linebacker Tanner Muse has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster. Muse was a third-round pick last year but the Raiders released him just before the season started. He missed his entire rookie season due to a foot injury, so this could be his first game.

The bigger implications of this being the team’s only move today is at the quarterback position. Each of the last two weeks Jake Luton had been elevated from the practice squad, serving as Geno Smith’s backup at QB on gamedays.

However, with Luton not getting the bump this week that means Jacob Eason will be the No. 2 guy behind Smith in tomorrow’s game. He’s the only other QB on the active roster and Danny Etling was released from the practice squad a few weeks ago.

A former Clemson standout is reportedly getting a fresh start in the NFL.

After being waived by the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, former Clemson and All-ACC safety Tanner Muse — who moved to linebacker with the Raiders — is signing with the Seattle Seahawks practice squad according to a report from NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero.

After being selected by the Raiders in the third round (100th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, Muse missed all of his rookie NFL season in 2020 after suffering a toe injury in training camp.

Muse recorded 10 tackles, half a sack, a pass deflection and a quarterback hit in three preseason games this year.

The Belmont, N.C., native finished his Clemson career from 2015-19 with 237 tackles (10.5 for loss), 15 passes broken up, 4.0 sacks, seven interceptions for 102 yards (including a 64-yard return for a touchdown), a forced fumble and a 63-yard fumble return for a touchdown over 59 career games (39 starts).

Long-awaited NFL debut ‘was surreal’ for former Tiger

Last season was a frustrating year for Tanner Muse.

After being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in the third round (100th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Clemson and All-ACC safety missed all of his rookie NFL season in 2020 after suffering a toe injury in training camp.

Muse has worked his whole life to accomplish his dream of being an NFL player, so it was difficult for him to have to sit out and watch the team play instead of being out there on the field with his teammates.

“It was tough for sure just not being able to be around the team, especially on traveling and that camaraderie that comes with the team, being in the locker room after wins, losses,” Muse said to the media on Tuesday. “It hurts as a competitor, but it was necessary to get to where I am today. So, I don’t look back on anything and wish any way else. I just keep going forward.”

Fast forward to 2021, and Muse is now fully healthy again.

And at long last, for the first time in more than 18 months, Muse took the football field last Saturday when he made his Raiders debut during the team’s preseason-opening 20-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

“It was surreal for me,” Muse said. “Just being able to get back out there in front of the fans, it was awesome. I was just super excited. Had some family there as well. So, everything went well. I think I played well. We watched the film, made some corrections on some little things, so you can only get better from it. So, looking forward to the next week.”

Not only did Muse return to action last Saturday, but he came back at a different position.

A safety during his Clemson career from 2015-19, Muse has moved to linebacker with the Raiders and felt comfortable playing there in the preseason opener, when he posted a couple of tackles and a pass deflection.

“It felt great,” he said. “I spun down a lot at safety at Clemson, so it felt natural. I was in the spots that I’ve been in prior throughout my career, so it was no big deal. Just a little adjustment, using my hands a little more. But outside of that, it was great.”

With his season-ending injury in the rearview mirror, Muse can play free and easy again and compete without limitations or worry of aggravating the injury.

“It’s so easy,” he said. “I don’t have to think about anything, I just get to fly around. I don’t want to count my steps or anything like that, like I’ve done in the past couple years. I can just explode out of cuts and drops. It’s a new me.”

Raiders LB Tanner Muse says his position change to linebacker is a natural fit

Raiders LB Tanner Muse says his position change to linebacker is a natural fit

When the Raiders drafted linebacker Tanner Muse in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he was seen as a bit of a project. He played safety at Clemson, and Las Vegas planned to move him to the front seven of the defense.

His “project” status appeared cemented after Muse had a rough training camp a year ago and was placed on the injured reserve list with a toe injury. But under new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, a healthy Muse is penciled in as the starting strong-side linebacker in the Raiders’ 4-3 front.

Furthermore, Muse said the switch to linebacker has been easy. Okay, he didn’t quite say that, but he came close. He exuded confidence in talking about his new role with reporters on Tuesday.

“It felt great,” Muse said, recalling his snaps during the Raiders’ first preseason game against the Seahawks. “I spun down a lot at safety at Clemson, so it felt natural. I was in the spots that I’ve been in throughout my career, so it was no big deal. Just a little adjustment. I use my hands a little more, but outside of that, it was great.”

Well then. Muse’s development on the Raiders is apparently accelerating rapidly.

It helps that he’s healthy, to be sure. Muse said that he no longer has to think about his health when he’s on the field and can simply react and use his instincts. “I can just explode out of cuts and drops. It’s a new me,” he said.

Bradley’s simpler scheme, as opposed to last year’s defense led by Paul Guenther, can only help the situation. Also, it must be noted that Bradley uses his “nickel” defense — with only two linebackers — more often than he opts for his 4-3 front. So Muse will play plenty of special teams, too, and he knows he’ll have to excel there.

“I’ve got to be the guy [on special teams] and make a lot of plays,” Muse said of his role on the Raiders. Muse also mentioned that he’s been tasked with knowing how to play each linebacker spot.

But if Muse can start at outside linebacker, or simply add quality depth to that position in just his second year, it would be a huge turnaround from his rough start in the NFL. Even providing a steady hand on special teams would be a bit of a surprise.

If he can consistently play with the confidence he displayed on Tuesday, however, the Raiders should have a quality piece to add to the roster when it appeared all they had was a project.

Former Tiger ready to make up for lost time in NFL year two

After being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in the third round (100th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, former Clemson and All-ACC safety Tanner Muse missed all of his rookie NFL season in 2020 after suffering a toe injury in training camp.

So, Muse is excited to get his first NFL game action this Saturday when the Raiders play their first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas.

“I’m really excited just to be able to get out in front of the fans,” Muse said, via Raiders.com. “I’m sure it’s going to be packed out. My mom’s coming so that will be exciting for her to see the stadium. And just being able to do what I’m here to do. That’s what I was brought here to do, make a lot of plays and excel.

“So, I’m excited to just get under lights again.”

Muse finished his Clemson career with 237 tackles (10.5 for loss), 15 passes broken up, 4.0 sacks, seven interceptions for 102 yards (including a 64-yard return for a touchdown), a forced fumble and a 63-yard fumble return for a touchdown over 59 career games (39 starts).

While Muse played safety for the Tigers, he has moved to linebacker with the Raiders and said the transition has been pretty smooth.

“I’m doing a lot of different things and that’s what I was doing at Clemson,” he said. “Sometimes I spin down on the line, stack linebacker and then being deep. So, very versatile and that’s the position I’m in right now. It’s kind of seamless, but at the same time, once you start dealing with more linemen the game is a little different.”

Now that he is healthy again and back on the field, Muse is ready to make up for lost time in his second year in the NFL.

“I took a whole year off,” he said. “I know that wasn’t what the franchise was expecting — and myself as well. I got to make up for that time and just continue to be my best every single day, and excel in special teams and defense.”
