A commendable trait of the Texas A&M basketball team is their relentless effort; they play hard for all 40 minutes. Conversely, their most frustrating aspect is their inconsistency in making jump shots from any position on the court.

Saturday night revealed the team’s difficulties at a critical time. The Aggies recorded 22.2% from beyond the three-point arc, made only four shots, and missed 20 free throws, achieving under 60% overall.

One could reasonably say that had they converted one additional three-pointer and shot at least 65% from the free-throw line, then the Aggies could have defeated a top 5 team.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, and they must now move on and focus on their next game against another top-ten Kentucky team. Here are the best photos from Saturday night’s game.

“We try to purge, good or bad,” Buzz needs Texas A&M to have a short memory with Kentucky next

Free throws killed the Aggies chance to pull out another Quad 1 win

Texas A&M had a rough night in the office on Saturday trying to play catch up to Alabama in the Aggies’ 94-88 loss at Reed Arena.

If you type “free throw” in Google the game between A&M and The Crimson Tide should be at the top right after the definition. Both teams shot a combined 88 attempts, and that is right up Texas A&M’s alley and part of their winning ways. That was until Saturday night when they missed an inexcusable 20 free throws.

“If we get fouled, we’d like to make ’em. We’re accountable for the time when we’re together that we shoot and make free throws. We’re also monitoring all the free throws we assign them to make when we’re not in the gym.”

Just like after the Oklahoma win, they have to reset and get ready for their next task which is a road game against Kentucky in a few days.

“The most important thing I can do is try to figure out how to help our guys before the sun comes up tomorrow when we have to figure out how to play another top-10 team at their place.”

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 94-88 loss to Alabama

Texas A&M could not complete comeback against Alabama after failing to connect from the free throw line all night long

Texas A&M (13-3, 2-1) drops its first conference game to No. 5 Alabama (14-2, 3-0) after a poor shooting performance while missing star guard Wade Taylor IV for the second consecutive game.

In a game with more than 50 fouls, it was difficult for either team to maintain an offensive rhythm for longer than a few minutes.

Like in Wednesday’s game against Oklahoma, the Texas A&M defense managed to keep the game competitive, allowing a chance to win. However, the team’s overall poor shooting performance from the field and free-throw line proved insurmountable.

Other than Pharrell Payne, the Aggies struggled to score despite having clear chances, while Alabama’s size around the basket made rebounding difficult. In the end, A&M did not capitalize on their opportunities well enough to secure an upset against a top-five team, as shooting only 28 out of 48 from the free-throw line complicates their path to victory.

GAME NOTES:

  • Pharrell Payne scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds
  • Texas A&M was outrebounded 55-45
  • 38.9% FG / 22.2% 3PT / 58.3% FT

HC Buzz Williams previews Texas A&M’s home test vs. No. 5 Alabama

A&M HC Buzz Williams speaks on what his team needs to do to contain a talented Alambama team

Texas A&M (13-2, 2-0 SEC) is fresh off a thrilling 18-point comeback against Oklahoma on the road for their second SEC win.

They did it without their star guard Wade Taylor IV, who sat out with an injury but was like another coach on the bench. Coach Buzz Williams received much praise for how he could still impact the team even while not in the game.

“I said man you did an unbelievable job coaching tonight
I mean just uh his impact uh has continued to increase in
his time here a portion of that in my opinion is his actions and his words have become the same and that’s really hard to do he has always had the right words his actions have continued to improve”

Buzz is excited when he learns it’s the first top-ten men’s basketball matchup ever in Bryan-College Station.

“feel honored I feel very special to be transparent with you and I’ll make sure that I tell our kids that today”
The also realizes that they cannot have a repeat of the Oklahoma game by letting Alabama get hot from beyond the arc as they shoot more three’s than OU.
“I anticipate Alabama who statistically shoots more threes than Oklahoma will probably shoot more threes than Wednesday night last time we played Alabama 58% of their shots were from three”

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s win 92-54 over Abilene Christian

Texas A&M will go into SEC play on a six-game winning streak after defeating ACU 92-54 at Reed Arena

Texas A&M (11-2) extends its winning streak to six after beating Abilene Christian (8-6) at Reed Arena Saturday afternoon.

The initial half of this contest resembled a fast-paced track meet between two highly athletic teams.

In contrast to their start against HCU last week, Texas A&M showcased improved efficiency, shooting over 60% from the field, with CJ Wilcher scoring 12 points and sinking four three-pointers to top all scorers in the first half. The defense also excelled, forcing 12 turnovers and limiting the opposition to just 11 successful shots, resulting in a 48-29 lead at halftime.

A&M slowed the pace just a little bit in the second half, but the defense stayed relentless. Wade Taylor IV is back in the lineup and picked up his offensive output, scoring double digits in the half and finishing his first double-double. The Maroon & White cruised to a 92-54 victory in which all 12 players scored at least once.

GAME NOTES:

  • Wade Taylor’s 15 points and 10 assists gave him his first career double-double
  • Texas A&M outrebounded ACU 41-21
  • 58.5% FG / 40% 3PT / 73.3% FT

Note: Wade Taylor has passed Vernon Smith for second place in Texas A&M basketball’s all-time scoring list and is now 212 points away from Bernard King as the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Texas A&M will start conference play against the Texas Longhorns at Reed Arena on Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m. CST. The game can be watched on the SEC Network.

Texas A&M Basketball vs Abilene Christian: Channel, time, streaming info

Watch Texas A&M vs Abilene Christian game today. Here’s how to watch, time, TV schedule, live streaming info, and game odds.

Saturday afternoon will be No. 13 Texas A&M’s last nonconference game before they hit the gauntlet that will be SEC play. After beating HCU last week, they moved to 10-2 in the season and extended their winning streak to six.

The Aggies and Abilene Christian have faced each other just seven times, with A&M winning all three encounters. The closest contest occurred in 2021 when ACU pushed A&M to double overtime, ultimately losing 81-80 at Reed Arena.

This season, the Wildcats have participated in only one Quad game against Baylor, suffering an 88-57 defeat. Given the Aggies’ strong performance lately, it seems unlikely that ACU will secure a victory.

Last week, after a slow start and without Wade Taylor, IV, A&M was able to kick it into high gear in the second half for a 32-point win. Coach Buzz Williams is off to one of his better starts since he is at A&M, and a win on Saturday will give him good momentum before starting conference play.

UGA basketball loses to Texas A&M on last second shot

The Georgia Bulldogs fought hard, but lost a heartbreaker in their SEC opener against the Texas A&M Aggies

The Georgia Bulldogs fought hard, but lost a heartbreaker in their SEC opener against the Texas A&M Aggies. Georgia took their first lead of the game after Kario Oquendo made a free throw with five seconds left.

Then, Texas A&M guard Marcus Williams dribbled up the court and hit a three-pointer with under one second remaining. Additional time was added to the clock, but Georgia was unable to respond to Williams’ last second shot.

The win moves Texas A&M to 12-2. Georgia basketball falls to 5-9 on the season. Head coach Tom Crean and Georgia showed resilience to battle back after trailing by 12 at halftime. The Dawgs outscored the Aggies 45-35 in the second half, but it was not enough.

Kario Oquendo scored 21 points to lead UGA in scoring. Noah Baumann, a USC transfer, added 19 points for the Dawgs. Texas A&M guard Henry Coleman III shot efficiently on his way to a team-high 23 points.

Next, Georgia will travel to Rupp Arena to face the No. 16 Kentucky Wildcats on Jan. 8.
