Season series: Rangers lead 4-1

The Rays were blanked 3-0 in Friday’s series opener in Arlington, and they suffered a 4-3 setback Saturday. The Under has cashed in each of the 2 outings in this series while going 5-1 in the past 6 games for Tampa Bay.

For the Rangers, they’ve posted 4 wins in the past 6 games, including a pair of shutout victories. The Under has cashed in 3 straight outings, all at home. Texas pitching has allowed 3 or fewer runs in 3 straight games and 5 of the previous 6 contests.

Rays at Rangers projected starters

RHP Zach Littell vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi

Littell (3-5, 3.94 ERA) makes his 18th start. He has a 1.32 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9 and 8.5 K/9 in 91 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 K in 5-1 road victory vs. Kansas City Royals Tuesday
  • 2024 road splits: 1-2, 4.46 ERA (38 1/3 IP, 19 ER), 1.62 WHIP, .325 opponents’ batting average (OBA), 8 BB, 31 K in 8 starts
  • Career vs. Rangers: 0-1, 2.31 ERA (11 2/3 IP, 3 ER), 1.29 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 2 starts and 5 relief appearances

Eovaldi (5-3, 3.15 ERA) makes his 15th start. He has a 1.08 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 9.0 K/9 in 80 IP.

Rays at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 4, Rays 3

Moneyline

The RANGERS (-140) are a solid play as moderate favorites as they look to complete the sweep behind the veteran Eovaldi.

While Eovaldi has been shaky away from home, he has a 4-0 record and 1.92 ERA in 51 2/3 IP across 9 starts at Globe Life Field. He and the Rangers should be able to continue their winning ways against the struggling Rays (+115) in this series finale.

Run line/Against the spread

If you’d like a little insurance but can’t bet them straight up, the RAYS +1.5 (-175) aren’t a terrible play for the more conservative bettor.

Tampa Bay has not only covered the past 3 on the run line as an underdog, but it has won 2 of the games outright. It is also 11-1 in the past 12 on the run line as a ‘dog.

The Rangers -1.5 (+145) are also just 5-5 in the past 10 games on the run line when favored.

Over/Under

UNDER 7.5 (-105) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most.

The Under is 5-3-2 in the past 10 starts by Eovaldi while cashing in each of the past 3 contests for the Rangers, including the first 2 of this series.

The total has gone low in 5 of the past 6 games for Tampa Bay, too, while going 8-3-2 across the previous 13 outings.

Bradley (5-5, 5.43 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.39 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 11.7 K/9 through 61 1/3 IP.

  • Has given up 4 ER or more in 4 of his last 6 outings

Rays at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 5, Rays 4

Moneyline

With Eovaldi being more consistent than Bradley on the mound this season, I’ll back the RANGERS (-140) at home on Tuesday. Tampa Bay is 25-22 on the road this season, while Texas is 31-18 at home.

Run line/Against the spread

This should be a close game between the Rays and the Rangers, but I’ll PASS on taking Tampa Bay +1.5 (-165) run line at the current odds.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 8.5 (-120) is the bet in this matchup with Bradley and Eovaldi giving up a decent number of runs in recent starts. The Rays and the Rangers are both top 5 in ISO, wOBA, and wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season.

The Over is 3-1 in the first 4 meetings between these teams this season.

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Rays (60-36) open a 3-game series against the Texas Rangers (55-39) Monday. First pitch from Globe Life Field will be at 8:05 p.m. ET (. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Rays vs. Rangers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Rays lead 2-1.

Tampa Bay kicked off the second half of the season by taking 2 of 3 games against the Kansas City Royals, failing to complete the sweep with an 8-4 loss Sunday. The Rays ended a season-high 7-game losing skid with a 10-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on July 9, the day before the All-Star break.

Texas picked up a weekend sweep of the Cleveland Guardians, punctuated with a 6-5 victory in the finale Sunday. The Rangers had dropped 8 of 11 games entering the break and have seen their lead in the AL West dwindle to 3 games since reaching a season-high 6 1/2 games on June 23.

Rays at Rangers projected starters

LHP Shane McClanahan vs. RHP Dane Dunning

McClanahan (11-1, 2.53 ERA) makes his 18th start. He has a 1.17 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9 and 9.5 K/9 through 96 IP.

  • Left his last start on June 30th after just 3 innings due to back tightness
  • Hasn’t been quite as good on the road as at home this season, boasting a 3.17 ERA with an inflated 4.8 BB/9 in 9 road starts
  • June 11 vs. Texas: Win, 7 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K

Dunning (8-2, 2.84 ERA) makes his 13th start and 21st appearance. He has a 1.13 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 5.8 K/9 through 92 IP.

  • Owns a 2.89 ERA despite having a weak 5.2 K/9 across 5 starts and 4 relief appearances at home
  • Has registered a 3.14 ERA and 6.0 K/9 across his 12 starts
  • He hasn’t been dominant this season, logging a career-low K/9 and Swinging Strike Rate, but has still done a fine job avoiding disaster, going 5-plus innings with 4 or fewer ER allowed in each start

Rays at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rays 6, Rangers 4

Moneyline

Both starting pitchers have excellent ratios, but McClanahan is the only one with the skills to support the surface stats. Dunning surrendered 4 ER last time out and could be in for a rude awakening against a Tampa offense that is 2nd in the league — behind only the Rangers — in runs scored.

Look for the RAYS (-120) to come out on top.

Run line/Against the spread

If a couple of weeks of rest was enough to get McClanahan back to full strength, the Rays have the clear pitching edge in this one. The Tampa bats should be set up for a good day against Dunning so a small play on RAYS -1.5 (+135) makes sense.

One unit on RAYS (-120) MONEYLINE and 1/2 unit on RAYS -1.5 (+135) is the recommendation here.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

These are the two highest-scoring teams in the league doing battle on Monday evening. Dunning is a poor bet to shut down the Rays, and it remains to be seen if McClanahan will be his usual self and what his workload will look like in his 1st start back from the IL. This line seems about right, but we’ll lean towards OVER 9 (-105).
