Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (45-26-6) take on the New York Rangers (45-21-11) in a playoff tune-up Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (TNT). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Lightning vs. Rangers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Lightning have won 3 in a row and allowed just 1 goal in the process. They dispatched the New York Islanders 5-0 Saturday and have had a few days of rest. Tampa is 6 points away from the 2nd spot in the division and can’t fall out of 3rd.

The Rangers are 7-2-1 over the last 10 games after taking down the Washington Capitals 5-2 Sunday. LW Artemi Panarin had 3 assists, and C Mika Zibanejad scored his 39th goal of the season, 2 away from his career high. The Rangers are 5 points behind the New Jersey Devils for 2nd in the division and can’t fall from 3rd.

This game doesn’t mean a whole lot for Tampa. Six points with 5 to go isn’t insurmountable, but it’s improbable. It wouldn’t be a shock to see a snarky goalie swap before puck drop just to keep the other team from seeing their guy so soon before a possible playoff matchup. Keep that in mind and place your bets later in the day to be safe.

Lightning at Rangers projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (33-20-4, 2.57 GAA, .918 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Igor Shesterkin (35-13-7, 2.52 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO)

Vassy is in playoff mode after allowing 1 goal in his last 3 starts, which came against the Islanders, Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes. He stopped 99 of 100 shots along the way. He’s 1-1 against the Rangers this season with a .953 SV%

Shesterkin has been sharp as well, holding teams to 3 goals or fewer in 10 straight starts. He hasn’t really been tested, either, as he has had fewer than 30 saves in 4 straight games. Shesterkin has been awesome against Tampa this year, going 1-0-1 and stopping 64 of 66 shots.

Lightning at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 2, Lightning 1

Moneyline

As mentioned, the Rangers are 5 points from moving up in the division, and they have a game in hand over the Devils. With this game being at home and seeing how well Shesterkin locks in against Tampa, I’m going to LEAN RANGERS -120.

Puck line/Against the spread

One goal has decided 4 of the last 7 games between the clubs, and the puck line isn’t the way to go.

PASS and look to the total.

Over/Under

Unless there’s a goalie change, we’re going to hammer the Under. The Under 5.5 has hit in 9 of the last 10 meetings between these teams. A total of 6 is too high if these goalies are playing. The Under is 4-0 in the Lightning’s last 4 and 6-1-1 for the Rangers in their last 8 against teams with a winning record. Wait until the goalies are confirmed and HAMMER the UNDER 6 (-110).

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers open their regular seasons Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Lightning at Rangers, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

This is a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Finals, which the Lightning won 4-2. After dropping the first 2 games of the series, Tampa Bay took the next 4 to advance to the Stanley Cup Final, which it lost to Colorado 4-2.

The Rangers were red-hot at MSG last season, riding a combination of solid goaltending and high-octane offense, which is often a recipe for success in the NHL. New York has won 35 of its past 51 games at MSG.

The Rangers beat the Lightning in all 3 regular-season games last season, 2 on the road and 1 at home – a 4-0 shutout Jan. 2.

Lightning at Rangers projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (39-18-5, 2.49 GAA, .916 SV%, 2 SO in 2021-22) vs. Igor Shesterkin (36-13-4, 2.07 GAA, .935 SV%, 6 SO in 2021-22)

Vasilevskiy won 19 regular-season games on the road last season, going 19-10-1 with a 2.77 GAA and .912 SV%. However, he was 0-2-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .875 SV% in 2 regular-season starts vs. the Rangers.

Shesterkin emerged as a star in 2021-22, so much so that the team parted ways with dependable backup Alexandar Georgiev (now with Colorado). Igor was a rock at MSG, going 21-6-0 with a microscopic 1.85 GAA and .940 SV%. Plus, 5 of his 6 regular-season shutouts came in front of the home fans.

In his short career, Shesterkin is 3-0-0 with a 1.30 GAA, .958 SV% and 1 shutout in 3 regular-season games – all last season – vs. the Lightning.

Lightning at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 3, Lightning 2

Moneyline

NEW YORK (-120) is worth playing, but the margin of error here is razor thin. These teams know each other well, and it is a budding rivalry thanks to their intense ECF series last spring. With these 2 superstar goalies, don’t expect either side to get very far ahead at any point.

Puck line/Against the spread

Lightning +1.5 (-260) is just too expensive if you’re expecting a close game like I am. You need to risk 2.6 times your potential return, and that’s never a good betting strategy, especially on Day 1. If you’re feeling Tampa (I’m not), just bet it straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-110) is a low number in this day and age, but goaltenders are typically ahead of the offense during the early going. This should be especially true with the two world-class backstops on display in this game. Expect goals to be at a premium at MSG Tuesday.

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers Game 5 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers Game 5 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers meet for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals Thursday at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The series is tied 2-2. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN+). Below, we look at the Lightning vs. Rangers Game 5 odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Lightning started out in a 2-0 series hole, falling 6-2 in Game 1 at Madison Square Garden, and then narrowly by a 3-2 count in Game 2. Tampa Bay won both games on home ice to square the series, outscoring New York by a 7-3 count.

The Rangers have registered 8 consecutive victories on home ice dating back to Game 1 of the Pittsburgh series, their very first game of the postseason. New York lost a triple-overtime thriller in that one, or it would be perfect in front of the home faithful this postseason.

Lightning at Rangers odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Lightning -130 (bet $130 to win $100) | Rangers +105 (bet $100 to win $105)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Lightning -1.5 (+185) | Rangers +1.5 (-260)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: +112 | U: -140)

Lightning at Rangers projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (10-5-0, 2.44 GAA, .925 SV%, 1 SO – postseason) vs. Igor Shesterkin (10-7-0, 2.65 GAA, .929 SV% – postseason)

Vasilevskiy wasn’t himself in the first game of this series, and in Game 2, for the most part. However, in 2 wins on home ice against the Rangers, the Tampa star allowed just 3 goals on 65 shots.

Shesterkin suffered a pair of losses in Games 3 and 4 in Tampa, but he has allowed 3 or fewer goals in each of his past 14 playoff starts since getting pulled early in Game 4 of the Pittsburgh series.

Lightning at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 3, Lightning 1

Money line

The RANGERS (+105) are short ‘dogs at home despite the fact they have won 8 consecutive games at home, and are a triple-overtime loss away from being a perfect 9-for-9 at MSG during this postseason. Until the Lightning (-130) prove they can win in New York, keep backing the home side.

Against the spread

The Rangers +1.5 (-260) are too expensive for my liking if you find the need for insurance. If you like New York, just play it straight up. Risking over 2 times your potential return is just silly.

PASS.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-140) is the play, as it has been the past 3 games. While it’s a moderate amount of chalk to eat, each of the past 3 games have seen exactly 5 total goals.

Under bettors have had to sweat it out each night, so play this one lightly. It easily could’ve flipped to an Over with a late empty-net goal or just 1 more score of any variety in any of the previous 3 outings.

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers Game 2 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers Game 2 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning face off against the New York Rangers Friday in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Finals playoff series. New York leads the series 1-0. Puck drop from Madison Square Garden is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we look at the Lightning vs. Rangers Game 2 odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Rangers were red hot in Game 1 as they put 6 goals past Lightning stud G Andrei Vasilevskiy in a 6-2 victory. Rangers C Filip Chytil had 2 goals, and C Mika Zibanejad had 1 goal and 1 assist to lead the charge. Zibanejad has points in 6 straight games and has 5 goals and 5 assists during the stretch.

The Lightning were clearly rusty after 9 days off, and they got outworked getting to loose pucks. They outshot the Rangers 39-34, but Tampa only won 40 percent of the faceoffs and went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Lightning at Rangers odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:16 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Lightning -130 (bet $130 to win $100) | Rangers +105 (bet $100 to win $105)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Lightning -1.5 (+185) | Rangers +1.5  (-260)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -105 | U: -120)

Lightning at Rangers projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (8-4, 2.53 GAA, .923 SV%, 1 SO – playoffs) vs. Igor Shesterkin (9-5, 2.64 GAA, .929 SV% – playoffs)

Vassy allowed 3 goals in 4 games to the Florida Panthers last series and was shelled for 6 in Game 1. He made 28 saves on 34 shots. The MSG crowd began chanting “Igor’s better,” which is sure to light a fire under him. Expect his best in Game 2.

Shesterkin was shaken up during Game 1 after a hit to his head. He was fine, but that’s something to watch as the series progresses. Shesterkin has allowed more than 2 goals once in the last 8 games. He has found his Vezina form after struggling early in these playoffs.

Lightning at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 3, Rangers 2

Money line

Tampa got embarrassed, and I think things will tighten up considerably. The most competitive person on the ice may be Vasilevskiy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he stood on his head to give Tampa the ability to steal home-ice advantage. Tampa is the favorite for a reason. Roll with the LIGHTNING -130.

Against the spread

I’m not a fan of either puck line here, especially the Rangers’ side at -260. One prop bet I would consider is the Lightning scoring first and setting the tone. LIGHTNING FIRST GOAL (-125) is at a solid price here. I would also consider LIGHTNING OVER 2.5 GOALS IN REGULATION (-140).

Over/Under

The Over cashed in Game 1, but that was the first time in 6 games for Tampa the Under didn’t hit. It’ll be close with a 5.5 number, but I really feel like this will be a lot more crisp. LEAN UNDER 5.5 (-120) in a showdown of arguably the 2 best goalies in the league.
