Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (0-1-0) face the Detroit Red Wings (0-0-0) Thursday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Lightning vs. Red Wings odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning raised their latest banner Tuesday, then they were humbled 6-2 by the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. Three of the goals allowed were of the empty-net variety.

The Red Wings were bottom feeders last season, but they were a thorn in the side of the Lightning. Tampa edged Detroit 5-3, but the teams split the final six games, and each of the final three losses by the Red Wings were one-goal games.

Lightning at Red Wings projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (0-1-0, 3.11 GAA, .906 SV%) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (15-5-3, 1.90 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO in 2020-21 with Carolina)

Vasilevskiy allowed three goals on 32 shots in Tuesday’s home loss against the Penguins. Facing the Red Wings should snap him back on track as he was 4-0-0 with a 1.49 GAA and .935 SV% vs. DET last season.

Nedeljkovic will make his highly anticipated team debut after coming over in a surprising trade from the Carolina Hurricanes during the offseason. He was 2-1-0 with a 1.02 GAA and .961 SV% with a shutout against the Lightning last season.

Lightning at Red Wings odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 3, Red Wings 2

Money line

It’s hard to envision the Lightning (-260) starting out 0-2 on the season. However, you can’t risk more than two-and-a-half times your potential return on the road against a Red Wings (+205) team that gave them fits last season.

AVOID.

Against the spread

Play the RED WINGS +1.5 (-115) on home ice. I don’t expect Detroit to win outright, but I think this is going to be a close game. If anybody on the Red Wings roster knows the Lightning best, it’s Nedeljkovic, who looks to pick up right where he left off in Raleigh, N.C.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+105) is a value play at plus-money. Tampa’s opener probably should have went Under, but head coach Jon Cooper pulled the goalie super early, allowing for several empty netters. The Under hit in three of the final four meetings between these teams last season. Look for more of the same here.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (34-14-2) play the first of a two-game set with the Detroit Red Wings (17-26-9) Saturday with a 3 p.m. ET puck drop at Little Caesars Arena. Below, we analyze the Lightning-Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Lightning have rattled off four consecutive wins, including a shutout by goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy at home against the Dallas Stars on Thursday as the Under hit.

While the Under is 4-2 across Tampa’s past six contests, they are averaging a healthy 4.3 goals per game across the previous four.

After a seven-goal outburst against Dallas on April 22, the Red Wings have slumped back into their non-scoring ways of late. They have a total of two goals scored in the previous three outings.

That’s a shame, as they have wasted good goaltending by both Jonathan Bernier and Thomas Greiss, who have allowed a total of five goals in the three-game span.

  • Money line: Lightning -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Red Wings +270 (bet $100 to win $270)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Lightning -1.5 (-125) | Red Wings +1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Lightning at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (30-8-1, 2.10 GAA, .929 SV%, 5 SO) vs. Thomas Greiss (6-15-8, 2.83 GAA, .908 SV%, 1 SO)

Vasilevskiy has rattled off three consecutive victories since a setback at home to the Carolina Hurricanes on April 20.

He hasn’t lost consecutive games in regulation since March 25-27, so yeah, he is on a roll. Vasilevskiy is also 4-0-0 with a 1.49 GAA and .935 SV% in four outings vs. DET this season.

Greiss has dropped two of his past three outings, but he has deserved a much better fate of late.

He was on the wrong end of a 1-0 shootout loss against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday, and he has allowed three or fewer goals in eight of his nine starts in April, but he has just four wins across his past 14 appearances.

Lightning at Red Wings: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 4, Red Wings 1

Money line (ML)

The Lightning (-350) will cost you three and a half times your potential return, and that’s risky betting behavior anytime, but especially for a team on the road. Even in a parlay with several teams, this play is just not worth adding.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (-125) are a much more cost-effective play on the puck line.

While three of the past five losses for the Red Wings +1.5 (+105) have been by just one goal, and they have covered the puck line in four straight as an underdog against the Lightning, play the favorite.

Tampa has covered the puck line in three of the past four wins. And in three of its past four road wins, the Lightning won by two or more goals as well.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-105) is a good bet here, as the toothless Detroit offense has been unable to produce against lesser goaltenders lately, so they’ll certainly struggle against Vasilevskiy and the Lightning.

The Under is 7-2-3 in Detroit’s past 12 at LCA, too, while going 6-2-1 in the past nine overall.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (17-4-2) play the first of a two-game set at the Detroit Red Wings (7-16-3) Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Predators-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Lightning at Red Wings: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:31 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Lightning -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Red Wings +275 (bet $100 to win $275)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Lightning -1.5 (-115) | Red Wings +1.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Lightning at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (15-3-1, 1.73 GAA, .939 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Thomas Greiss (1-11-3, 3.37 GAA, .885 SV%)

Vasilevskiy streaks in on a six-start heater, including three consecutive shutouts Feb. 24-March 2. He is also a perfect 2-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .955 SV% in his two starts against the Red Wings this season. Vasilevskiy allowed one Red Wings goal on 16 shots in a 5-1 win Feb. 3 at Amalie Arena, and he allowed one goal on 28 shots in a 3-1 win two days later.

Greiss was on the short end of those two losses in Tampa. He allowed three goals on just six shots and was yanked after 5:36 in the first start, and he allowed just two goals on 31 shots in the second appearance, but the result was the same – a loss.

Lightning at Red Wings: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 4, Red Wings 1

Money line (ML)

The Lightning (-350) should be able to get it done against the Red Wings. Even though it’s hard to envision Detroit pulling the upset, you cannot risk three and a half times your potential return, especially on a road favorite. PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (-115) are better play on the puck line. They covered each of the first two meetings against the Red Wings in Tampa in early February. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Vasilevskiy blank the Wings, either. Tampa is 7-0-1 across the past eight dating back to Feb. 22, and it has won six of the past seven games by two or more goals. It also has covered the puck line 14 times in its 17 victories.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-110) is a good play based on Vasilevskiy’s stellar play, and the fact the Red Wings have averaged just 1.0 goals per game in their two previous tries against him this season. Plus, the Under is 5-2 in the past seven for Tampa. Detroit ranks dead-last in the NHL with just 2.08 goals per game, and its power-play ranks 30th at just 10.7 percent, which isn’t a recipe for Over results.
