Stats show how badly Jared Goff struggled under pressure vs. Bucs

The advanced stat breakdown from Next Gen Stats shows how badly Jared Goff struggled under pressure vs. Bucs

Jared Goff has always been something of a tale of two quarterbacks, as Lions legend Herman Moore recently described. The Goff playing without pressure from the defense is consistently one of the NFL’s better quarterbacks. The Goff under pressure, well, not so much…

That was certainly the case in Detroit’s Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Goff posted some solid production with 307 passing yards, completing 34 of his 55 pass attempts. However, he did not throw a touchdown pass and did get picked twice, though one of those absolutely should have been defensive pass interference (the box score doesn’t care).

Part of the problem in the Lions loss, and a big reason why they only scored 16 points despite posting over 450 total yards, was that Goff had a very rough day when pressured by the Tampa Bay defense. The analytics folks behind Next Gen Stats revealed just how much Goff sputtered when pressured in Week 2.

Sandwiched between nuggets on Jalen Hurts and Jayden Daniels in the Zebra Technologies weekly newsletter is this unsavory tidbit on Goff,

Jared Goff went 9/17 for 117 yards, 2 INTs, and had a 35.3 passer rating when under pressure in the Lions’ home loss vs. Tampa Bay.

That’s a rough split from the overall statistics, and that’s also something that has been fairly characteristic of Goff’s NFL career.

Lions elevate two wide receivers for Week 2 showdown with Buccaneers

Lions elevate two wide receivers for Week 2 showdown with Buccaneers, including newcomer Tim Patrick

With some injury issues impacting the Detroit Lions ahead of Sunday’s matchup in Ford Field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions made some final tweaks to the active roster. Detroit elevated two wide receivers from the practice squad to the game day roster.

Tom Kennedy and Tim Patrick were elevated. With rookie Isaiah Williams ruled out with an abdominal injury, the promotions fill a hole on the Lions roster.

It’s the second elevation in as many weeks for Kennedy. Patrick will make his Detroit debut. He was elevated after joining the Lions from the Broncos shortly after the roster cutdowns.

Defensive tackle DJ Reader remains on track to see his first action in a Lions uniform, too. Reader didn’t carry an injury status on the final report and no setbacks happened, so the veteran nose tackle figures to be in the lineup. The Lions not adding any other defensive help.

The Bucs have to pressure Jayden Daniels in Week 1 against the Commanders

They have built this pass-rushing group as more of a success by committee rather than relying upon one player to carry the load for them.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had some mild success rushing the passer during the preseason. They have built this pass-rushing group as more of a success by committee rather than relying upon one player to carry the load for them.

While that, in theory, is a potential formula for success, they will not have much time to find out. The team will be going up against a new-look Washington Commanders offense that will need to be pressured early and often.

Yaya Diaby will be leading the charge for the Bucs’ pass rush, who is looking to continue his momentum from a successful 2023 campaign.

It can’t all be on Diaby, though. The Bucs need help from everyone if they are going to make Jayden Daniels’s NFL debut rough. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner was sacked a lot in his final college football season, and more often than not, it was his own doing.

Daniels is very agile and mobile in the backfield while a play develops, but his awareness is lacking. He has a tendency to move his way into sacks and more pressure so if the Bucs pass rushers can showcase their motors they may have something.

The Commanders offensive line is one of it’s worst position groups in the roster. The Bucs front seven should have a strong showing. If they don’t, then it may be a long day for the Bucs and the offense will find themselves in a barn burner.

Lions WR coach Antwaan Randle El interviews for Buccaneers coordinator opening

Antwaan Randle El was on the TB staff before joining the Lions in 2021

The Dan Campbell coaching tree could be spawning off a new branch. Lions wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El has interviewed for the offensive coordinator position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Randle El is one of two candidates noted by Aaron Wilson who have completed interviews to be the new OC under head coach Todd Bowles. Tampa Bay is looking to replace Dave Canales, who left to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

Randle El has been with the Lions throughout the Campbell era, joining the team in 2021. Before that, the longtime NFL wideout was on the Buccaneers offensive staff for two seasons.

Josh Allen’s golf ball for ‘The Match’ features Tom Brady’s infamous NFL combine photo

Allen pulled zero punches on Brady.

In Tom Brady’s two-plus decades in the NFL, there has been no shortage of reminders of his er, “troubled” past.

Of course, I’m talking about Brady’s exploits at the 2000 NFL Scouting Combine. Thanks to that event, a shirtless (and, let’s be honest, unflattering) photo of Brady’s then-physique resurfaces from time to time. Sometimes out of love, especially after he wins a big game. Sometimes out of good old-fashioned spite, especially after winning a big game.

With “The Match” pitting Brady and Aaron Rodgers against Pat Mahomes and Josh Allen on Wednesday night, Allen grasped for the familiar low-hanging fruit:

He put the infamous Brady combine photo on his go-to golf ball.

How absolutely savage. I don’t know about you, but I’m loving this superstar turn from Josh Allen. He’s taking shots at maybe the greatest quarterback of all time, and I’m not even batting an eyelash.

Not only that, this is a known sore spot as Brady has previously expressed his distain for the picture’s existence over the years.

Over 20 years later, Brady is still bothered by how he looked in his early 20s. Who among us?
