Falcons expected to retain T.J. Yates as quarterbacks coach

T.J. Yates, who served as the Falcons WRs coach in 2023, will take over as the QBs coach on Raheem Morris’ staff, per report

The Atlanta Falcons have now retained three coaches from Arthur Smith’s staff. T.J. Yates, who served as the wide receivers coach in 2023, will take over as the quarterbacks coach on Raheem Morris‘ staff, NFL Network’s James Palmer reported on Monday afternoon.

Former Falcons offensive coordinator Dave Ragone served as the QBs coach last season, but the team is expected to hire Rams pass-game coordinator Zac Robinson as the offensive coordinator. Now Yates will take over for Ragone.

Yates is a former NFL quarterback who spent one season as a member of the Falcons in 2014. The former fifth-round pick appeared in 22 games over seven NFL seasons, making 10 starts.

The Falcons are also expected to keep running backs coach Michael Pitre and special teams coordinator Marquice Williams, according to multiple reports.

The UNC football connection with Atlanta Falcons is strong

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, receivers coach T.J. Yates and wide receiver Mack Hollins are all UNC football alums.

Looking at college throwbacks of athletes always gives a nostalgic feel.

Fans can think back to that first connection they formed with their favorite athlete. Was it a specific game? Touchdown catch? Bone-crushing tackle that SportsCenter played on repeat Sunday morning? How about their willingness to come over and sign autographs after a busy day under the hot sun?

Regardless of how people develop those initial connections with their favorite athletes, it’s always interesting to hear someone’s story.

Do the names Mack Hollins, T.J. Yates and Arthur Smith ring a bell?

Hollins is the most recent Tar Heel on this list. A former walk-on, Hollins is now fifth all-time in touchdown receptions (20). Hollins, now an Atlanta Falcon in Year 6, is coming off his most productive season, one in which he caught 57 passes for 690 yards and four touchdowns for the Las Vegas Raiders.

T.J. Yates, down in Atlanta with Hollins as the Falcons’ receivers coach was one of Carolina’s best quarterbacks in recent years. He threw for 9,377 career yards, second all-time behind Sam Howell. Yates started 44 games, including 29 consecutive to close out his career. He didn’t fare as well in the NFL, though, logging 2,057 career passing yards while throwing for 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Yates is best-known in the NFL for helping the Houston Texans clinch their first playoff berth in franchise history.

Arthur Smith, a guard who played in Chapel Hill from 2001-2005, is, coincidentally, head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Most of Smith’s collegiate playing time was marred by foot injuries.

The Falcons will be playing in a new-look NFC South this year. The Carolina Panthers will have 2023 first overall pick Bryce Young at quarterback, a brand new running back room and wide receiver trio, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be rolling with either Baker Mayfield or former Florida Gator Kyle Trask at quarterback, while the Saints might have the division’s best quarterback in Derek Carr.

Hollins will be catching passes from Cincy alum Desmond Ridder, while working closely with Yates.

Can this Carolina trio help lead the Falcons to their first playoff berth since 2017?

Falcons hire T.J. Yates as passing game specialist

The Atlanta Falcons added another former NFL quarterback to their coaching staff on Saturday, naming T.J. Yates as the team’s passing game specialist.

The Atlanta Falcons added another former NFL quarterback to their coaching staff on Saturday, naming T.J. Yates as the team’s passing game specialist.

Yates played at North Carolina before being selected in the fifth round by the Houston Texans in 2011. He would go on to lead the Texans to their first ever playoff win as a rookie. After that, Yates spent several years as a backup, including a one-year stint with the Falcons in 2014.

Retiring in 2017, Yates would go on to join the Texans coaching staff as an assistant quarterbacks coach in 2019. After serving two years in Houston, he joins the Falcons new staff as a passing game specialist under offensive coordinator Dave Ragone.

Ragone, who also played quarterback in the NFL, won’t be calling the plays. Head coach Arthur Smith will be Atlanta’s play-caller in 2021.

Texans asst. QB coach T.J. Yates provides Deshaun Watson with fine details to be successful

Houston Texans assistant QB coach T.J. Yates has been providing quarterback Deshaun Watson with the details necessary to elevate his game.

The only comparison T.J. Yates and Deshaun Watson share is they were or are still quarterback for the Houston Texans. In terms of talent and ability — forget about it.

“I’ll point out the obvious here and I don’t think T.J. will get upset at this, but obviously there is a different skill level when you talk about Deshaun and T.J.,” offensive coordinator Tim Kelly said.

Kelly, who is the new play-caller as coach Bill O’Brien doubles up as general manager, is also adding the role of quarterbacks coach to his responsibilities. Helping Kelly in the quarterback room is Yates, a former Texans quarterback who went 5-7, including the postseason, in his three different stints with the club from 2011-17.

Houston drafted Yates in the fifth round in 2011; they took Watson in Round 1 of the 2017 NFL Draft.

“When that happens, if you’re not necessarily as talented or as skilled as another player you have to make sure that you really are paying attention to the details in order to have the level of success that T.J. had in this league,” Kelly said. “Because he really had to focus and train and really milk every ounce of ability that he had to reach that level, T.J. has been able to come in there and really dissect that position in terms of the amount of detail that he would go into a game plan with in terms of his preparation, comparing the different styles in the ways that they prepare. It’s been really great to have him in there.”

Kelly has a background as a defensive lineman, having played defensive tackle for Eastern Illinois while in college. All of the 34-year-old’s professional coaching experience has been on offense; Kelly never played the game from the offensive perspective. As such, he has to lean on Yates to check that his advice for Watson is practical and realistic.

Said Kelly: “It’s been great to hear from T.J., like, ‘Hey, can you really see this? I know I can see this when I’m watching tape, when I’m watching film, but when you’re out there and there’s however many people screaming, can you really see that this guys is aligned six inches further inside than he is when he’s doing something else?’

“Having him in there has been really good and I’m looking forward to the room continuing to grow as we go on here.”

Yates helped the Texans to their first ever playoff win at the end of the 2011 season. If Yates, as a coach, can help Houston win their first Super Bowl by cultivating more of Watson’s talent, that is a perspective Texans fans will enjoy.

Being a backup QB helped Texans’ T.J. Yates transition into coaching

Houston Texans assistant quarterbacks coach T.J. Yates says being a backup QB helped him transition into coaching.

T.J. Yates had to know everything in his playing days.

The former Houston Texans 2011 fifth-round pick spent his seven-year NFL career as a backup.

“In my career playing in the NFL, I was a backup obviously for the majority of the time,” Yates told reporters on Wednesday. “You don’t get a lot of reps on the field. You have to kind of stand in the back and do a lot of mental reps. You have to do a lot of coaching to the other players that are in the background and aren’t on the field.”

Yates’ backup experience enabled him to transition into coaching as he had to know all aspects of the offense.

“You don’t get all the reps in practice, so by the time you do get in a game you better be on your stuff,” said Yates, who was 4-6 in his career with the Texans. “That’s how I took my career and approached my career as a backup quarterback and I think that helped transition into coaching.”

The former North Carolina Tar Heel is now an assistant quarterbacks coach for the Texans. The 33-year-old will be helping second-year offensive coordinator Tim Kelly coach the quarterbacks.

“He’s going to do a really good job with working with the quarterbacks and their mechanics, all the different techniques that are involved with playing that position,” Kelly said. “T.J.’s obviously played the position here in the NFL for a number of years, so he’s very well-educated and very knowledgeable with what it takes to be successful at this level. He’s going to be working with the quarterbacks, strictly with their techniques and fundamentals.”

Deshaun Watson is entering his fourth season in the NFL. If Yates can help the two-time Pro Bowler take another step in his development, it could mean the difference in helping Houston reach the AFC Championship Game or further.

NFL Draft: Of the 12 QBs chosen in 2011, one remains with the team that selected him

Cam Newton went first and Greg McElroy went last of the 12 QBs drafted in 2011. How did they all do in the NFL?

A dozen quarterbacks were taken in the 2011 NFL Draft. Cam Newton was the first, going No. 1 overall. With the exit from Carolina of Newton, Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals, for now, remains the last quarterback to be with the team that drafted him in 2011.

Greg McElroy still has a home in football, in the broadcast booth. His NFL career consisted of one start, a loss, for the Jets who took him 208th overall. McElroy threw for 214 yards with a TD and a pick in his career.
