Notre Dame wins outright ACC regular-season championship

Feels nice to be alone on the conference mountaintop.

[autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag]’s transformation as a worthy successor to [autotag]Muffet McGraw[/autotag] officially has been completed. With Notre Dame needing a road win over Louisville in its regular-season finale to clinch at least a share of the ACC regular-season title, the pressure couldn’t have been higher. The road was made tougher with the sudden loss of [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag], one of the country’s best players, to a right knee injury. All signs pointed to a disappointing precursor to the ACC Tournament.

Instead, Ivey kept her team focused, and the Irish overcame a 10-point third-quarter deficit to come away with a hard-fought 68-65 win over the Cardinals. With Duke losing to North Carolina, the Irish won their first outright ACC regular-season championship since 2017. They last won a share of the ACC regular-season title in 2019.

The 24-4 Irish finished conference play with a 15-3 record. They will have the top seed in the conference tournament, which begins Wednesday in Greensboro, North Carolina. Their first game will be in the quarterfinals Friday against the winner of Thursday’s second-round game between NC State and Syracuse.

ACC men’s basketball leaders as of Feb. 19

No Notre Dame players on the list.

With less than three weeks until Selection Sunday, the time for ACC teams to make a move is now. The opportunities to make an impact are getting fewer, and if a team hasn’t done that yet, it might already be too late. Nonetheless, here are the players most likely to help their teams make a last-minute impression on the selection committee:

Notre Dame pulls away from Syracuse in fourth quarter

The Irish finally showed the Orange who’s boss.

Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team was fresh off watching the men blow a game at Syracuse. It surely didn’t want to suffer the same fate when it took its turn at the JMA Wireless Dome. While it took longer than probably would have been preferred, the Irish finally sent a message that they’re having a better season than their male counterparts. Their 72-56 win was the latest proof of that.

For the first three quarters, the Irish (14-2, 5-1) faced a real challenge from the Orange (13-5, 4-3). They took a five-point lead into the fourth and decided enough was enough. Including [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag]’s 3-pointer during the final minute of the third, they went on a 17-4 run to erase any doubt as to who the afternoon belonged to. In the final quarter, the Irish outscored the Orange, 22-11.

[autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] was the big player once again with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. [autotag]Dara Mabrey[/autotag] had 15 points, and [autotag]Lauren Ebo[/autotag] grabbed eight boards off the bench.

The ACC continues to march forward with its season. It’s getting late for some teams to make a move, and others will be just fine when the time comes to unveil the NCAA Tournament bracket. Here are some players who could help sway the selection committee for their team, especially if they’re on the bubble:

Watch: 4-star SG Elijah Moore makes his commitment to Syracuse

Watch Moore announce his decision.

Over the weekend Syracuse got a commitment from Cardinal Hayes (NY) four-star Junior shooting guard Elijah Moore.

Watch Moore announce his decision.

Moore makes the first commitment of the 2024 recruiting cycle for Syracuse, who won out over 10 other schools that made Moore offers. According to Sports Illustrated, the other finalists were Alabama, Arkansas, Miami and Oklahoma State.

Considered one of the top scorers in his class, Moore told On3 that he picked Syracuse because it felt like home.

“It felt like home, From the coaches, to the fans, to the players, it all felt right. They helped me understand what they want to help me do and they have a plan for themselves and myself… I would like to let the Cuse fans know I’m excited to be there and ready to win a lot of games. I can’t wait to see everyone and put on for my school. We are going to make a difference at Cuse and bring back the culture of winning.”

Moore (6-foot-4, 170 pounds) is ranked No. 22 among shooting guards in the class of 2024 and No. 97 in the nation.

One Notre Dame player cracks the list.

We are prepared to leave January behind and enter February, the final full month of college basketball’s regular season. This is when we’ll really get to see whether the teams that have made noise to this point are legitimate or whether any struggling teams are just lying in the weeds. In the meantime, here are some of the players most making noise, specifically those in the ACC:
