Syracuse at Virginia odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Syracuse at Virginia odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Syracuse Orange (10-5, 3-1 ACC) meet the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers (10-3, 2-2) Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET (ACC Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Syracuse vs. Virginia odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The Orange inched past Louisville 70-69 on the road Tuesday, failing to cover as 9-point favorites. Syracuse had rolled up 78 or more points in its 6 previous games dating back to Dec. 6, and the Over is 6-1 in its last 7 outings.

The Cavaliers were tripped up 68-65 in Pittsburgh last time out, falling outright as 6-point favorites. The Hoos are actually 2-3 across their last 5 games overall and are a dismal 1-8 against the spread across the previous 9 outings.

Syracuse at Virginia picks and predictions

Prediction

Virginia 68, Syracuse 64

Moneyline

PASS.

Virginia (-700) will cost you 7 times your potential return, and that’s just too expensive, especially for what should end up being a surprisingly close game.

Against the spread

SYRACUSE +11.5 (-115) catching double digits is an absolute gift and one of my favorite bets in a long time. Take advantage.

Syracuse is a reasonable 5-3 ATS across the past 8 games overall, and it has won 3 of its 4 games outright inside the ACC. The road team is also 7-1 ATS in the previous 8 meetings in this series.

Virginia has no business laying double digits to anyone, as it has just 1 cover in the past 9 games overall. UVA is 0-4 ATS in the past 4 instances as a double-digit favorite and 1-5 ATS overall on the season giving up 10 or more points.

Over/Under

OVER 126.5 (-115) is worth a look.

The Over is 6-1 in Syracuse’s last 7 games overall while cashing in 5 in a row against teams with a winning overall record.

The Under is 5-1 in the past 6 at John Paul Jones Arena for Virginia but the Over is 5-0 in its last 5 outings against teams with an overall winning record.

Syracuse vs. Virginia odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Syracuse Orange vs. Virginia Cavaliers odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Syracuse Orange (16-8) and Virginia Cavaliers (17-6) meet in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon with a noon ET tip-off in Greensboro, N.C. Below, we analyze the Syracuse-Virginia odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Virginia is No. 15 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Cavaliers had byes in the first two rounds of the tournament as the No. 1 seed. Syracuse is the No. 8 seed.

  • Money line: Syracuse +185 (bet $100 to win $185) | Virginia -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Syracuse +5.5 (-115) | Virginia -5.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 131.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Syracuse vs. Virginia: Three things to know

  1. Syracuse advanced to Thursday’s bracket play by defeating NC State 89-68 Wednesday afternoon. The Orange outshot the Wolfpack 56.7% to 36.2% from the field and SU poured it on from distance, knocking down 14 of 29 attempts (48.3%) to claim its third straight win. Junior G Buddy Boheim led the Orange with 27 points.
  2. Virginia last played Saturday and picked up a 68-58 win at Louisville. The Cavaliers have won back-to-back games after losing three in a row to close February. UVA earned its No. 1 seed by virtue of a 13-4 conference record; that record included an 81-58 win over Syracuse Jan. 25.
  3. UVA is 11th in the nation in turnover avoidance when measured as a percentage of possessions. For the low-tempo Wahoos, that amounts to just 9.3 miscues per contest. Virginia has committed just 19 combined turnovers over its last three games.

STEAR CLEAR of the well-bracketed ML action for this one.

Against the spread (ATS)

The favorite is 4-1 ATS over the last five meetings between SU and UVA.

BACK THE CAVALIERS -5.5 (-105). Syracuse needs to force turnovers and get out in transition to get this game into one-possession territory, and Virginia figures as a disciplined, strong defensive rebounding five which can leverage its rest and take this one by 6-plus.

Peg the lean here as a small one, though: a 4.5-point tag would make for decent value.

Over/Under (O/U)

A 130-to-133-point game fits the fat part of the bell curve in predicting a game flow. Don’t expect a ton of free throws, and don’t be surprised if SU’s distance game turned into a pumpkin at midnight last night.

The UNDER 131.5 (-110) is the lean, but just barely.

Syracuse at Virginia: Three things to know

  1. Syracuse is coming off two impressive home victories after dropping back-to-back road games. As 1-point favorites, the Orange routed No. 14 Virginia Tech 78-60 Saturday, following an 83-57 win vs. Miami as 5-point favorites Tuesday. Sophomore F Quincy Guerrier scored 20 points against Va. Tech, while junior F Alan Griffin recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 7 blocks. Guerrier leads five Orangemen in double figures with 16.9 points per game.
  2. Virginia has won 6 in a row and 9 of 10, but the last victory didn’t come easy. Junior G Kihei Clark‘s only basket of the game broke a 62-all tie with 1:13 remaining and senior F Sam Hauser scored 11 of his game-high 22 points during a 15-2 second-half run as Virginia fended off unranked Georgia Tech 64-62 at home Saturday. The Cavs, who were 8.5-point favorites, trailed 54-45 with 10:01 remaining before a Hauser jumper at the 4:59 mark gave Virginia its first lead of the second half. Hauser leads four Cavaliers in double figures at 14.5 PPG and averages a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game.
  3. The ACC rivals split their two games last season. Virginia won 48-34 as a 3-point favorite and Syracuse claimed a 63-55 upset in overtime as a 7-point road underdog. The Cavs are 7-3 straight-up in the last 10 in the series but just 5-5 ATS.

Syracuse at Virginia: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Virginia 69, Syracuse 58

Money line (ML)

AVOID. Virginia (-300) will win, but it’s not wise to risk 3 times your potential profit.

Against the spread (ATS)

VIRGINIA -6.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Virginia was a little rusty against Georgia Tech having not played for seven days. The Cavaliers should be more leg-ready for this one. Plus, you can bet they haven’t forgotten last season’s OT upset at home.

ATS: Syracuse 6-7 | Virginia 7-5

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 129.5 (-110). Virginia’s defense allows just 59.6 PPG to rank sixth in the country.

I am a little leery because two of the Cavs’ three ACC home games finished above 130 points. Plus, both teams are really good from the free-throw line. Virginia shoots 80.4% from the charity stripe to rank third in the nation, while Syracuse shoots 78.9% to rank 12th.

O/U records: Syracuse 6-7 | Virginia 7-5
