3 takeaways: Thunder bench, 3-point shooting pushes OKC over T-Wolves

The Oklahoma City Thunder made 21 3-pointers, the third-most in Thunder history, to take down the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-103 on Monday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 31 points led the way and countered a 33-point double-double from Karl-Anthony …

The Oklahoma City Thunder made 21 3-pointers, the third-most in Thunder history, to take down the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-103 on Monday.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 31 points led the way and countered a 33-point double-double from Karl-Anthony Towns.

The bench of Oklahoma City supplemented his production. All four players in the second unit finished with at least nine points and a plus-minus of positive-eight or better. For the second night in a row, these minutes were crucial in a Thunder win, as the OKC bench’s 46 points outpaced the 37 from six Minnesota bench players.

Here are three takeaways from the Thunder’s win, starting with the performance of Svi Mykhailiuk:

Apparently, new Thunder wing Svi Mykhailiuk can throw down dunks

Svi Mykhailiuk threw down a slam dunk against the Minnesota Timberwolves that surprised OKC Thunder Twitter.

In Svi Mykhailiuk’s first game with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he focused on ball movement. He didn’t want to disrupt the flow. He just wanted to learn how his teammates play and how he could fit in.

In Mykhailiuk’s second game, he played a more active and aggressive role in the offense. I see how you guys play, he seemed to say; now here’s how I can contribute.

In the third game, he made clear that he hadn’t shown quite everything he could do for the Thunder in the previous game.

Against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, Mykhailiuk erupted to throw down a monster slam that surprised Thunder Twitter.

It was the highlight of the first half. At the break, the Thunder led 57-50 behind 13 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and 12 from Ty Jerome off the bench.

Mykhailiuk had two points, two steals and an assist at halftime.

They outpaced Karl-Anthony Towns, who had 15 points in the first quarter but was unable to score in the second. He injured what appeared to be his left wrist during the first quarter, finished out that period and then returned in the second with the wrist taped.

3 takeaways: Shorthanded Thunder hand Rockets their 20th loss in a row

With rebounding, bench play and a little bit of Lu Dort magic, the OKC Thunder held on to hand the Houston Rockets their 20th straight loss.

With rebounding, bench play and a little bit of Lu Dort magic, the Oklahoma City Thunder held on to defeat the Houston Rockets 114-112 even without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Al Horford.

It was the Rockets’ 20th loss in a row.

Oklahoma City led by as many as 13 points, but the Rockets’ starting unit that includes John Wall (24 points), Christian Wood (27 points) and Victor Oladipo (23 points) pulled the Rockets back in.

The score was tied with two minutes remaining in the game when Lu Dort assisted a Theo Maledon layup. Dort was taking the bulk of ball handling duties even with guards Maledon and Ty Jerome on the court at closing time.

“In that part of the game, you end up in a lot of rotations a lot of the time, especially when you drive in, and I was pretty confident that Lu was going to be able to touch the paint, so then it was about getting guys around him that could make secondary plays,” head coach Mark Daigneault said.

While Dort ran the offense for OKC, Wall took on the brunt of the load for Houston. After the Thunder re-took the lead, the former All-Star got fouled on the other end of the court and made one of two free throws.

This set up a finish in which Dort saved the game by blocking Wall’s layup attempt with nine seconds to play.

“It was a good play by Wall, attacking me and getting to the rim,” Dort said. “He kind of beat me, so I had to try to be clever and not give up on the play.”

Here are three takeaways from the game:

Svi Mykhailiuk: ‘Happy to be here’ after trade to Thunder

Svi Mykhailiuk has needed some adjustment after a mid-season trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but his first impressions are positive.

Svi Mykhailiuk made his Oklahoma City Thunder debut on Thursday. He was scoreless in 16 minutes and only attempted two shots after head coach Mark Daigneault said he would have somewhat of a limited role in his first game with the team.

There’s been some adjustment for Mykhailiuk, who was traded along with a 2027 second-round draft pick from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Hamidou Diallo.

“I feel like it’s kind of harder to fit in in the middle of the season than the beginning of a season, but me coming up here, trying to fit in as much as I can,” he said on Tuesday, two days before his debut.

“Do whatever Coach asks me to do — stretch the floor, be me, play hard, a lot of effort. Play hard on defense and make the right play on offense.”

With that said, Mykhailiuk has had a good first impression of Oklahoma City.

“It was unexpected, but now we’re here. Really happy to be here, really excited to be here and be part of the Thunder,” he said. “Really good people, really good organization. Love it here so far.”

Head coach Mark Daigneault said he had also had a good first impression of Mykhailiuk. Despite the scoreless night, the forward did well to fit in, the coach said.

“I was really impressed with how he went out there and just tried to fit into what we were doing,” Daigneault said. “It’s always interesting to watch a guy that’s new to a group, and I really respect the way he went about it. If anything, we could have him be a little more aggressive.”

With only half a season left on Mykhailiuk’s contract before he hits restricted free agency, the Thunder’s evaluation will focus on if his fit on the team.

Improving his 3-point shooting, playing good defense and showing smart ball movement is important for Mykhailiuk over the remaining 31 games of the season.

“When we get a new player, we want to understand who the guys is and what his game is, but also not place too much judgement based on his previous experiences, because those environments are different, his teams were different,” Daigneault said.

Oklahoma City’s next game is Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Houston Rockets.

Svi Mykhailiuk expected to debut for Thunder vs. Hawks on Thursday

Svi Mykhailiuk will play for the OKC Thunder against the Atlanta Hawks for the first time following the Hamidou Diallo trade, Daigneault said.

One of the newest members of the Oklahoma City Thunder should get some court time on Thursday.

Head coach Mark Daigneault said before the game that Svi Mykhailiuk will play against the Atlanta Hawks for what will be his first appearance in a Thunder uniform.

Mykhailiuk was officially acquired from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Hamidou Diallo on Saturday.

The Thunder have had two games since the trade went through. Mykhailiuk was not with the team on Sunday and was a DNP on Tuesday. Daigneault said it felt “a little aggressive” to play the wing that close to the trade.

“You just want to make sure that there’s enough familiarity with what we’re doing that we’re not putting him in a position to fail,” Daigneualt said. “We’ve had a shootaround, a game and a practice, and we’ll throw him out there tonight and see how he looks.”

With that time to get accustomed to the Thunder’s scheme, Mykhailiuk can take the court.

Daigneault noted that it will likely be in a limited role.

Oklahoma City hopes Mykhailiuk can play how he did last season, when he shot 40.4% from 3. This year, he has shot just 33.3% from behind the arc and his scoring average has decreased from 9.0 to 6.9 points per game.

The Thunder and Hawks are scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m.

Woj: Thunder trade Hamidou Diallo for Svi Mykhailiuk, second-round pick

The OKC Thunder have reportedly traded Hamidou Diallo to the Detroit Pistons for Svi Mykhailiuk and a 2027 second-round draft pick via the Houston Rockets.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have traded guard Hamidou Diallo to the Detroit Pistons for forward Svi Mykhailiuk and a 2027 second-round draft pick via the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Diallo had been having the best season of his career for the Thunder. Primarily coming off the bench, he averaged 11.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 23.8 minutes per game.

With Diallo’s impending restricted free agency approaching, the Thunder would have had to issue him a qualifying offer and may have had to fight for his rights this offseason.

He is traded to the Pistons and general manager Troy Weaver, who was an assistant general manager for the Thunder from 2008-2019 and then president of basketball operations in 2020 before accepting the Detroit GM job.

In return, the Thunder acquire Mykhailiuk, a 23-year-old small forward who is now entering his third NBA team in as many seasons. The No. 47 overall pick in 2018, Mykhailiuk played 42 games for the Lakers as a rookie before being traded to the Pistons.

Over 56 games last year with Detroit, Mykhailiuk shot 40.4% from 3 on 5.1 attempts per game. He averaged 9.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists and started 27 games.

He has not played nearly as well this season, averaging 6.9 points on 33.3% 3-point shooting. His minutes have dropped to just 17.6 per game.

Mykhailiuk will also be a restricted free agent this offseason.

In making this trade, Oklahoma City’s guards next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be Theo Maledon and Ty Jerome. Wings including Lu Dort, Kenrich Williams and Justin Jackson can also play the 2, as can the 6-foot-7 Mykhailiuk.

The second-round pick via Houston originates from the sign-and-trade in which the Rockets acquired Christian Wood from Detroit this offseason.

It adds onto general manger Sam Presti’s stockpile of draft picks. The Thunder now have three 2027 second-round picks — their own, the Rockets’ and one from the Indiana Pacers.
