Bob Ryan doesn’t want to hear you complaining about Jaylen Brown or his contract

While some question if the Georgia native is living up to his historic supermax contract extension, Ryan argues that Brown’s numbers speak for themselves.

In a recent interview on his eponymous CLNS Media “Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, and Gary Tanguay” podcast, Celtics beat writer emeritus Bob Ryan defended Jaylen Brown‘s impact on the Boston Celtics. While some question if the Georgia native is living up to his historic supermax contract extension, Ryan argues that Brown’s numbers speak for themselves.

With an average of 21.9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game so far this season, Brown has been a key contributor to the ball club’s success. Ryan admits that the Cal alum may not (yet) be the highest-paid player on the team or in the league, but he believes Brown deserves credit for his performance even so.

Tune in to hear Ryan’s insights on Brown’s play and his stance on defending one of the Celtics’ young superstars.

Supermax candidates this season: Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, more

Every year, a handful of players have eligibility for a designated veteran contract or extension, also known as the supermax. When players meet the supermax criteria, they become eligible for a higher maximum salary than their years of service allow.

Any player on a rookie-scale contract can qualify as long as they meet the criteria before the end of the deal. However, only veterans who remain on the teams that they finished their rookie-scale contracts with can qualify for the supermax contract. This rule was implemented as an incentive to keep star players with their teams.

The simplest way to meet the criteria is for a player to earn All-NBA honors in the season preceding an eligibility year. A veteran could qualify by earning All-NBA honors in his seventh season or eighth season, while a player on a rookie-scale contract can qualify by earning All-NBA honors in their 4th season.

Alternatively, they could qualify by earning All-NBA honors in the two seasons preceding those listed earlier. Players could also qualify by winning Defensive Player of the Year under those same guidelines as All-NBA. And if a player wins MVP in any of the three seasons preceding eligibility, they would automatically qualify.

Below is a list of all the players who have supermax eligibility on the line and what it would take for them to qualify.

Is the supermax really reserved for the best players? Or the ones who qualify?

Even if the supermax was intended to be a tool to retain a “franchise-level player,” it has morphed into the cost of doing business — as the Celtics seem to have acknowledged.

The Designated Veteran Player Extension — sometimes called the “supermax” extension for short — is a double-edged sword for NBA franchises. It will give them a powerful tool to retain top talent, but at times at the cost of signing a player to a contract their production might not quite live up to.

With the Boston Celtics having recently extended All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown to such a deal, the debate has entered the Celtics media sphere since the start of the 2023 NBA offseason. With that in mind, a recent article by Heavy’s Steve Bulpett shared the perspective of league execs on the supermax, with trepidation being shared by at least one anonymous GM.

“Supermax isn’t a guarantee of the result you’re looking for,” offered the unnamed general manager. “Inflated contracts are even harder to move.”

“The additional penalties in the new CBA should slow the roll of everybody giving out a supermax deal the first time a guy qualifies,” they said. “Just because a guy qualifies for it doesn’t necessarily make him entitled to it.”

“If you’re going to call yourself a franchise-level player, which is what I think the supermax number says, you’ve got to have more than just putting up numbers,” they posit.

Within that framework, they have a point. But how NBA rules are intended vs. how they play out are two different things.

In this case, even if the supermax was intended to be a tool to retain a “franchise-level player,” it has morphed into the cost of doing business — as the Celtics seem to have acknowledged by their acts.

Celtics Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce on Jaylen Brown’s supermax contract extension

Garnett and Pierce got into a conversation about Brown’s new deal and the state of contracts in the league more generally in recent years.

It seems like half the NBA media have weighed in on star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown‘s historic, $304 million supermax contract extension in the last few weeks. Until now, a duo with deep Celtics roots have not said their piece on the Georgia native’s massive extension.

On the most recent episode of the Showtime Basketball “Ticket and the Truth” podcast, Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce engaged in a conversation about Brown’s new deal and the state of contracts in the league more generally in recent years.

The pair also touched on other NBA issues lingering into the doldrums of the 2023 NBA offseason — and how players treat that part of the league calendar differently now.

Jayson Tatum talks supermax deals and the 2023-24 season at the Hall of Fame

“I’m always excited for the new season,” he explained. “It’s like a brand new opportunity.”

In his first attendance at a Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame induction ceremony, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum attended the ceremony as a surprise guest of 2023 Hall of Fame inductee Dwyane Wade per new reporting from the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

Despite the motivational setting, Tatum emphasized that he is not in a rush to retire and that he wanted to show support and respect for Wade. The St. Louis native related how he’s excited for the Celtics season to come, even if he is in no hurry to end his offseason. “I’m always excited for the new season,” he explained. “It’s like a brand new opportunity.”

“I’m excited to see what we can do and we got a couple (of) months until we start, so I’m still going to enjoy my summer a little bit but it’s almost that time.”

Among the more controversial stories following the Celtics this summer has been the $304 million supermax extension inked by teammate Jaylen Brown, but to Tatum, there was nothing controversial about it.

“Much deserved, it was a no-brainer,” he suggested. “So I’m happy for him and his family. It’s life-changing. It’s a big deal. I’m happy we’re going to have him for however much longer we’ve got him for. I’m happy about that.”

As for his own looming supermax contract talks? “I don’t think about nothing of that,” said Tatum. “It’s one day at a time.”

How the new collective bargaining agreement is creating salary disparity issues in the NBA

Jaylen Brown’s supermax contract extension shows how this emerging issue has mid-level salaries becoming less common.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

The NBA is facing a problem of record-breaking contracts being given to players who might not be quite worth the pay supermax contracts demand. This trend is causing an extreme gap in earnings between players of varying skill levels and poses challenges for team management under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

Using the example of star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown’s supermax contract extension, the folks behind the And One Hoops YouTube channel put together a video pointing to this emerging concern that has mid-level salaries becoming less and less common in the NBA.

The problem seems likely to worsen as more non-superstar players receive massive deals due to salary cap intricacies. Their contracts will soak up team cap space that could have been used for the supporting cast.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear the breakdown of this new concern in the Association.

Will Jaylen Brown stay with the Boston Celtics on his new extension?

Will the Cal alum retire wearing the green and white?

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

All-NBA Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown signed a supermax contract extension that will keep him with the Celtics through the end of the 2027-28 NBA season on paper, with no team or player option allowing the Georgia native to reach free agency earlier than that offseason.

In the modern NBA though, that rarely guarantees a player stays with his team for that long, especially under the league’s new and punitive collective bargaining agreement. Brown could eventually ask out of Boston, or the Celtics could trade Brown to address an increasingly expensive roster.

Will that happen, or will the former Cal standout retire wearing the green and white?

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning and John Zannis debated all of this on last week’s “Garden Report” podcast in the clip we have embedded above for you to listen to and decide for yourself whether Brown sticks around.

What kind of trade value will Jaylen Brown have for the Boston Celtics when he is eligible to be dealt again?

Brown cannot be traded to any team in the NBA even if all parties agreed it was for the best due to the terms of his new supermax contract extension.

What kind of trade value will Jaylen Brown have for the Boston Celtics when he is eligible to be dealt again? At present, the Georgia native cannot be traded due to the terms of his new supermax contract extension.

Eventually, a year after Brown signed his new deal, he will be able to be traded. What sort of value will the former Cal standout have on a supermax-sized contract, and what sort of returns could the Celtics expect to get? The answer could be more complicated than you might think.

That did not stop the host of the “Locked On Celtics” podcast, John Karalis, from offering his perspective on such a move, including a more granular perspective on what all parties might be after in such a hypothetical.

Jaylen Brown’s deal with the Boston Celtics is a long-term investment in continuity

This deal can be seen as an investment in continuity even as other moves acknowledge the roster still needed work.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

Star forward Jaylen Brown’s recently signed supermax contract extension with the Boston Celtics is worth over $300 million, but among the most interesting aspects of his historic deal — the largest in the history of the NBA — is what the Celtics see as an investment in their future.

In recent years, the Celtics have been successful in the playoffs because they kept their core players together, allowing them to grow and develop their chemistry over time. This deal can be seen as an investment by Boston in continuity even as other moves acknowledge the roster still needed work.

The hosts of the Peacock “Brother From Another” show linked up to discuss the context of Brown’s supermax extension.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say.
