The NBA is facing a problem of record-breaking contracts being given to players who might not be quite worth the pay supermax contracts demand. This trend is causing an extreme gap in earnings between players of varying skill levels and poses challenges for team management under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.
Using the example of star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown’s supermax contract extension, the folks behind the And One Hoops YouTube channel put together a video pointing to this emerging concern that has mid-level salaries becoming less and less common in the NBA.
The problem seems likely to worsen as more non-superstar players receive massive deals due to salary cap intricacies. Their contracts will soak up team cap space that could have been used for the supporting cast.
