Steve Weatherford: Super Bowl XLVI ‘was one of most depressing nights of my life’

Former New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford explains why Super Bowl XLVI was among the most depressing nights of his life.

Winning isn’t always everything. Ask former New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford, who, in a post on social media, recently outlined his depression after perhaps the greatest night of his life.

The Giants had won Super Bowl XLVI, defeating the New England Patriots, 21-17, their second victory over Tom Brady and Bill Belichick in four years.

Weatherford punted four times in the game, averaging 40.8 per attempt with three of those punts landing inside the 20. None of his four punts were returned.

Despite the all-time performance, Weatherford couldn’t help but to feel depressed after the game.

“The night we won the Super Bowl was one of the most depressing nights of my life… Let me explain why,” Weatherford wrote on Facebook. “On February 5th, 2012 we played the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. The game was in Indianapolis just 47 miles from my hometown… My family, my parents, and my friends were all coming and whoever couldn’t would be watching on TV and I actually had the greatest game of my life. I couldn’t have performed better and we won 21-17.

“But after all the celebrations and parties were over, something came over me. I was sitting in my hotel room and a deep wave of depression came over me. All the early mornings, all the years of hard work, all the sacrifice… and I didn’t feel different. I tried to fill the void inside of me with winning and success but all it did was leave me feeling empty. That’s when I decided that I couldn’t stay in the NFL much longer and needed to find a deeper sense of purpose.”

Weatherford played a few more seasons for the Giants before ending his career with the Jets in 2015. His life has since taken on a new purpose and he is dedicated to helping other men find their true calling.

“So let me be the first to warn you, no amount of success or achievement can fill the God-sized hole in you,” Weatherford continued. “It wasn’t until I got my life in order with God at the top that I was able to find a much deeper sense of purpose that energizes me every day. So now I’m on a mission to help other men do the same.

“I could’ve stayed in the NFL, I could’ve continued growing my supplement business, or been on TV but there is nothing that lights me up more than helping men live a life on purpose. That’s why I am going to spend a lot of 2024 taking tribes of men through a 90-day transformational Intensive based on my experience.”

Weatherford has detailed a number of personal issues since his retirement but has found purpose outside of the game of football, including his new program for men.

Report: Ex-Giant Hakeem Nicks selling his Super Bowl XLVI ring

Former New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks is auctioning off his Super Bowl XLVI ring with a portion of the sale going to charity.

Former New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who was among the league’s best before injuries derailed his career, is parting ways with his Super Bowl XLVI ring.

TMZ Sports reports that Nicks has put his ring up for auction through Heritage with expectations that it could fetch upwards of $80,000.

The current bid is $25,000 with three days remaining on the auction.

The ring was issued to our consignor, the Giants’ first-round selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. Nicks led all receivers in Super Bowl XLVI with 109 yards on ten catches. A mine’s worth of diamonds and blue sapphires coat the face which features the team logo “NY” and four miniature Lombardi Trophies to represent the franchise tally. “New York Giants 2011 World Champions” stands in block lettering at the perimeter. Left shank reports the original owner’s surname and jersey number, another team logo and the franchise’s years of Championship glory. The list of championship seasons is completed on the right shank beneath another team logo, the Lombardi Trophy in miniature, and the final score of the game. Interior band bears the text, “All In” and “Finish,” as well as “T&C AU .585” stamping, indicating fourteen karat gold construction by famed jeweler Tiffany & Co.

The massive size fifteen (15) ring weighs ninety-five grams (95 g.) and presents with moderate wear in original (slightly damaged) wooden display case. Just the second example of this ring that Heritage has had the privilege to present. Letter of provenance from Hakeem Nicks.

It’s unclear why Nicks is auctioning off his Super Bowl ring but TMZ Sports notes that a portion of the sale will go to charity.

A first-round pick of the Giants in the 2009 NFL draft, Nicks spent eight years in the NFL with six of those coming with New York over two stints.

In 92 career games, Nicks hauled in 356 receptions for 5,081 yards and 31 touchdowns. And during that Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, he caught 10 of his 13 targets for 109 yards.

Nicks last played in 2016 for the New Orleans Saints but was training for an NFL comeback as recently as 2019. That never materialized.

What is Tom Brady’s sweet, clever message to retiring Eli Manning?

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady offered a fun, sweet message to Eli Manning, who has retired.

Eli Manning and Tom Brady have history … Super Bowl history. The retiring New York Giants quarterback got the best of the New England Patriots’ signal-caller twice. So what was the G.O.A.T.’s message to Manning as he steps away from football after 16 seasons?

Check this clever tweet:

Brady’s Patriots and Manning’s Giants dueled in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, with Big Blue winning both games, 17-14, and 21-17, respectively. Manning threw for 551 yards and three TDs combined to Brady’s 542 and three TDs.

Brady, meanwhile will head to free agency. Oh, the Giants have hired Joe Judge, the Patriots’ former special teams coordinator/wide receivers’ coach. Could Big Blue, which has 2019 No. 1 draft pick and sixth overall, Daniel Jones, be in the market for a veteran QB?

… Nah!
