Updated 2021 Super Bowl odds: Offseason moves driving NFL odds changes

NFL odds around the 2021 Super Bowl have changed considerably due to free agency and trades.

[jwplayer iluT1Hra]

The NFL Draft is around the corner and the free-agent market is starting to dry up. With a number of NFL teams looking significantly different already, sports betting odds around the 2021 Super Bowl are already moving – in some cases, quite considerably.

The Kansas City Chiefs, 31-20 winners over the San Francisco 49ers in last year’s Super Bowl, remain the favorite in the eyes of BetMGM oddsmakers. Their odds have even become slightly shorter, moving 50 points since right after the Super Bowl win.

Are you new to sports betting? Future bets are wagers placed on events down the road, often many months before. The odds are long, driving potential huge returns if you nail the bet correctly. A $100 wager on the Chiefs at +600 would return a $600 profit if they win back-to-back championships.

Saints receive one of the NFL’s highest over/under win totals for 2020

The Saints enter the 2020 season with high expectations. The oddsmakers at BetMGM project one of the highest over/under win totals for them.

[jwplayer czuabpXL-ThvAeFxT]

Battle lines are already being drawn up across the NFL with teams eyeing a shot at Super Bowl LV, with the Kansas City Chiefs hoping to defend their title while everyone else looks to dethrone them. Some squads have better chances than the rest, thanks to intelligent roster design and bold moves in free agency.

And the oddsmakers at BetMGM expect the Saints to be in that number. Their initial over/under win totals have the Saints at 10, which is a nice spot considering New Orleans has won 26 of their last 32 regular season games. The only team in the NFC with a higher total is the San Francisco 49ers, narrowly, at 10.5. Just two other teams sit above them: the Chiefs (11.5) and the Baltimore Ravens (11).

As luck would have it, the Saints are set to host both the 49ers and the Chiefs inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this season. So we should get a quick read on just how New Orleans stacks up against other Super Bowl contenders.

We’d be remiss not to survey the rest of the NFC South, while we’re here. BetMGM’s oddsmakers have put up over/under win totals for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9), Atlanta Falcons (7.5), and Carolina Panthers (5.5), which feels bold given those teams’ combined record of 19-29 last year. Tom Brady and Teddy Bridgewater may have their work cut out for them in playing catch-up with the Saints.

Saints rule the NFC in Touchdown Wire’s mid-free agency power rankings

The New Orleans Saints rose to the top spot in the NFC during the updated mid-free agency NFL power rankings from Touchdown Wire.

[jwplayer CcMnGV6Q-ThvAeFxT]

The first few waves of free agency have come and gone, sending shockwaves throughout the NFL. It’s rocked the hierarchy of Super Bowl contenders in both the AFC and NFC, which was reflected in the updated power rankings from Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield.

For the Saints, the additions of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and defensive back Malcolm Jenkins (both regular faces at the Pro Bowl) combined with losses around the conference to put them ahead of their competition. The Saints now rank third-best in the NFL and should be seen as favorites to represent the conference in Super Bowl LV. Here’s what Schofield wrote to justify their high placement, above rivals like the San Francisco 49ers (fourth), Green Bay Packers (fifth), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (eighth):

The Saints badly needed to get Michael Thomas a running mate, and they did just that, adding Emmanuel Sanders to bolster their wide receiver group. Both Thomas and Sanders are versatile targets, with both being used last season in the slot and on the boundary. With Sanders in the fold, New Orleans can use their first-round selection to help the defense, perhaps with Zach Baun from Wisconsin, or they could trade down as they currently last a second-round pick.

Speaking of the defense, adding Jenkins into the secondary gives them a proven veteran safety with the ability to play both as a single high free safety or down in the box if needed. He can also serve as a strong mentor for Marcus Williams at the opposite safety spot and be a leader in the locker room.

But the main reason for their modest jump is the Sanders acquisition. This is going to be a very hard passing game to slow down.

The addition of Tom Brady elevated the Buccaneers from a below-average squad to a Super Bowl dark horse, but the rest of the NFC South trails them and the Saints a big further behind. Teddy Bridgewater’s landing with the Carolina Panthers raised them from second-worst to just No. 28, while the Atlanta Falcons slid back to the No. 22 spot after starting the offseason at No. 19. When you lose key contributors like Austin Hooper and De’Vondre Campbell and replace them with first-round draft busts like Laquon Treadwell and Hayden Hurst, you’re going to have a bad time. For now, it’s looking like a two-horse race (at best) in the NFC South.

Colts given 23/1 odds to win Super Bowl 55

Colts are gaining favor for the 2021 season.

The Indianapolis Colts have been extremely aggressive to begin the official offseason, including a blockbuster trade for DeForest Buckner and a one-year deal to bring in quarterback Philip Rivers. It appears they are entering a win-now mode.

[lawrence-related id=40995]

There is still work to be done—most of which will come through the draft—but the Colts are already seeing their projections increase. In fact, they now have 23/1 odds to win Super Bowl LV, according to BetMGM.

Those odds are the fifth-highest in the AFC behind the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots—the last of which is interesting given the expected departure of quarterback Tom Brady.

In the division, the Titans came in with 28/1 odds followed by the Texans at 40/1 and the Jaguars at 100/1 odds.

Even with the acquisition of Buckner and the signing of Rivers (pending a physical), the Colts have a lot of work to do. The defensive line is much strong now, but depth and talent still need to be added to the edge. The secondary could also use some depth.

On offense, the unit should be better with Rivers under center. How much better remains to be seen, especially with a need to add to the wide receiver and tight end positions.

Regardless, it appears the Colts are gaining the favor around the league again after making a few moves to officially begin the offseason.

Tennessee Titans’ early odds to win Super Bowl 55

Where do the Tennessee Titans stand among the rest of the NFL in the early odds to win Super Bowl 55?

While the Tennessee Titans own with the fifth-best odds to win the AFC Championship in 2020, they’re a bit further back when it comes to their odds to win Super Bowl LIV.

According to BetMGM, Tennessee (+2500) is tied for the ninth-best odds to win next year’s Super Bowl.

Here’s a list of the teams in front of the Titans, which includes the Los Angeles Rams, a team that has the same odds as Tennessee.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs (+650)
  2. Baltimore Ravens (+700)
  3. San Francisco 49ers (+750)
  4. New England Patriots (+1100)
  5. New Orleans Saints (+1200)
  6. Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles (+1400)
  7. Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks (+1800)
  8. Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings (+2000)
  9. Titans and Rams (+2500)

Depending on what happens this offseason with the Titans and their top free agents — Derrick Henry, Ryan Tannehill and Jack Conklin — those odds could move in either direction.

Adding Tom Brady at quarterback could lead to the Titans moving up, also.

We’ll keep an eye on the odds as the offseason progresses because a lot can change between now and free agency.

3 reasons the Ravens are destined to win Super Bowl LV

The Baltimore Ravens have a number of reasons why they’re seemingly destined to not only go to, but win, Super Bowl LIV.

The Baltimore Ravens had a truly great season filled with amazing highlights, a franchise-best 14-2 record and the AFC’s No. 1 seed for the first time in team history. But it ended all too soon, and as the Kansas City Chiefs reveled in their confetti shower and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

The Ravens are set up to be serious contenders next season as well, though. They have the second-best odds to win Super Bowl LV and a ton of reasons why they’ll be in the mix for a Super Bowl berth. However, there are a few things that are too perfect to be mere coincidences and have me believing Baltimore is absolutely destined to win Super Bowl LV.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Following in Patrick Mahomes’ footsteps

If we go off what Mahomes did, it’ll be Jackson’s time next season.

Mahomes won the NFL’s MVP award last season, but Kansas City ultimately fell short in the AFC Championship Game. This season, Mahomes lost out on the award to Jackson but got a Super Bowl MVP trophy instead.

Mahomes has faced tons of criticism for how he plays, from being a more mobile quarterback to his at-times unorthodox delivery of the ball. Before the 2018 season, many thought Mahomes wasn’t capable of leading a team, much less to a Super Bowl victory. Jackson faced eerily similar backlash, because of accuracy issues in his rookie season and his tendency to run.

It seems almost like destiny for Jackson and Baltimore to follow in the footsteps of Mahomes and Kansas City to a Super Bowl victory.

Eagles have 25-1 odds to win Super Bowl LV

Philadelphia Eagles have 25-1 odds to win Super Bowl LV

The 2019 NFL season is officially over and the Kansas City Chiefs are the reigning kings after securing a Super Bowl title following their 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

The NFL changes gears really quickly and with the Tampa being the host of next year’s big game, Vegas oddsmakers are already hard at work predicting the early field.

Caesars Sportsbook released an early look at the championship odds for all 32 teams and the Eagles have the sixth-highest odds in the NFC.

Kansas City opens as the early odds on favorites for Super Bowl LV, at 6-1. Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are second at 7-1, with the San Francisco 49ers (8-1), New Orleans Saints (11-1) and New England Patriots (14-1) rounding out the top five.

With players like Drew Brees, Tom Brady and others still weighing their futures, plus the spectators of the NFL Draft and free agency, those odds are certain to change several times over the next few months.

For the Eagles, they’ll be fine as long as Carson Wentz and Doug Pederson are on the same page offensively. The Eagles will look to get quicker, faster and younger during one of the most important offseasons in team history.

Saints rank high among initial Super Bowl LV betting favorites

The New Orleans Saints are favorites to win Super Bowl LV in early betting odds from BetMGM, trailing only the Chiefs, Ravens, and 49ers.

[jwplayer fAXNAxlv-ThvAeFxT]

The 2019 NFL season is in the books. Super Bowl LIV has been decided (Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs overcame a big second-half lead against Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers), the 2020 NFL Draft order is set in stone (until teams begin trading picks and maneuvering the draft board), and the New Orleans Saints are looking forwards. And while it’s very early, expectations are as high as they’ve ever been with Sean Payton coaching the team: the Saints are Super Bowl contenders.

Per the early odds from BetMGM, the Saints have been given the fourth-best shot at winning Super Bowl LV in Tampa Bay next year. The Saints’ odds (+900) trail just three teams, including both squads that participated for Super Bowl LIV in Miami. Here’s how the top ten shakes out:

  • AFC Kansas City Chiefs (+650)
  • AFC Baltimore Ravens (+700)
  • NFC San Francisco 49ers (+900)
  • NFC New Orleans Saints (+1200)
  • AFC New England Patriots (+1400)
  • NFC Green Bay Packers (+1800)
  • NFC Philadelphia Eagles (+1800)
  • AFC Pittsburgh Steelers (+1800)
  • NFC Seattle Seahawks (+1900)
  • NFC Dallas Cowboys (+2000)

It’s interesting that the gap between the Saints and the top-rated NFC team is smaller than that between New Orleans and its next-best competition; that suggests the Saints are in a different tier than the tied-for-third Packers and Eagles. While Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Patriots passer Tom Brady have not re-signed with their teams just yet, their squads’ high placements in these early Super Bowl odds may suggest confidence that both Hall of Famers-to-be will return.

Panthers have 100/1 odds to win the next Super Bowl

The odds are less than ideal for the Carolina Panthers to be the ones to do it.

The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off another inexplicable, historic comeback on Sunday, reeling off 21 straight points against the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth quarter to win Super Bowl LIV by a score of 31-20.

Congratulations are in order for Andy Reid, who will now finally get the recognition he deserves as one of the sport’s greatest coaches.

While the eventual Super Bowl MVP looked flustered by the 49ers defense for most of it, Patrick Mahomes made just enough plays down the stretch to lead another improbably successful come-from-behind effort. Our quarterback rankings will be coming out later in the month but it’s safe to say Mahomes will be at the top. His victory over Nick Bosa’s Niners brought his record to a preposterous 5-0 when falling behind by double digits this year.

Mahomes and the rest of Kansas City’s comeback kids are the new kings of the NFL. Now, the battle to dethrone them begins.

The odds are less than ideal for the Carolina Panthers to be the ones to do it. According to the updated odds for Super Bowl LV, they are 100/1. That ties them with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals and the Miami Dolphins for the second worst odds in the league. Only Washington (200/1) was lower on the list. The Chiefs are currently the favorites at 5/1.

Those are tough odds to swallow for any fan. Those in need of a silver lining should look to San Francisco as an example of how quickly a team can turn around in one year, though.

The 49ers went just 4-12 last year and few if anybody expected them to be playing in the Super Bowl when the season began. Kyle Shanahan will rightly get a lot of grief for blowing another huge lead in a championship game, but he also deserves an immense amount of credit for getting his team as far as he did – especially given his limitations at quarterback.

Even though they had an awful record in 2018, the 49ers’ roster was of course far more complete than Carolina’s right now. However, there is one interesting parallel.

Jimmy Garoppolo only played three games that season due to a torn ACL. While he clearly still has a ton of developing to do, his absence was the most significant factor in San Francisco’s struggles that year. By comparison, the Panthers were playing without Cam Newton for all but two games last season and it appears he will be coming back in 2020.

When he’s healthy, Newton is a far more capable QB than Garoppolo. He’ll also have a truly innovative offensive coordinator for the first time in his career. If they can fix the offensive line and Cam stays off the injury report, he will have a legitimate shot at Comeback Player of the Year and the Panthers likely will significantly improve on their 5-11 record.

That said, even if Newton gets back to an MVP level, the Panthers have a ton of questions to answer before we can even begin talking about a playoff run.
