Penn State falls in updated Super 16 poll from football writers

Penn State was bumped down in this week’s Super 16 Poll form the football writers.

With Michigan and Notre Dame each losing this weekend, there were bound to be some big changes in this week’s rankings. While awaiting the release of the latest national polls, the Super 16 Poll from the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation was updated to reflect the results of Week 2 around the college football world.

Michigan managed to stay within the top 16 teams of this week’s Super 16 Poll after getting run over at home by Texas. The Longhorns picked up some first-place votes and moved one spot ahead of Ohio State this week as a result. But Georgia continues to outpace everybody in the Super 16 poll with 44 first-place votes this week.

Penn State was moved down one spot in favor of moving three teams up in the reworked poll. As Michigan and Notre Dame fell out of the top 10, Ole Miss moved up from no. 8 to no. 5, Miami jumped from no. 10 up to no. 6, and Tennessee moved from no. 14 up to no. 7. All three passed Penn State, which fell from no. 7 down to no. 8 this week.

Here is a look at the latest FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll following Week 2:

  1. Georgia – 849 points (44 1st-place votes)
  2. Texas – 801 (8)
  3. Ohio State – 770 (2)
  4. Alabama – 629
  5. Ole Miss – 600
  6. Miami – 480
  7. Tennessee – 468
  8. Penn State – 451
  9. USC – 436
  10. Oregon – 429
  11. Missouri – 398
  12. Utah – 323
  13. Oklahoma – 166
  14. Oklahoma State – 146
  15. Kansas State – 101
  16. Michigan – 61

In the interest of full disclosure, I am also a voter in this poll. One of the biggest differences between my ballot and the final voting is my ranking of Arizona, which actually falls ninth among others receiving votes in the overall voting this week. My ballot this week looked like this:

  1. Georgia

  3. Texas
  4. Alabama
  5. Ole Miss
  6. USC
  7. Penn State

Football writers keep Penn State at no. 7 in Super 16 Poll

Penn State receives top-10 ranking form football writers in new Super 16 Poll.

The Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation team up every season to conduct the Super 16 Poll, taking votes from a selection of college football writers, analysts, hall of famers, and more. After putting together a preseason poll leading up to the start of the season, the FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll has been updated to reflect the results of the first full weekend of college football.

This poll, similar to the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25, has Penn State sitting comfortably with a top-10 ranking. But where those other two polls have the Nittany Lions at no. 8, the Super 16 Poll has Penn State sitting at no. 7. That keeps Penn State where it was ranked in the preseason Super 16 Poll.

Here is a look at the brand new Super 16 Poll following the results of Week 1.

FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll: Week 1

  1. Georgia – 858 points (50 1st-place votes)
  2. Ohio State – 775 (3)
  3. Texas – 733 (1)
  4. Alabama – 666
  5. Notre Dame – 565
  6. Oregon – 535
  7. Penn State – 527
  8. Ole Miss – 498
  9. Michigan – 367
  10. Miami – 329
  11. Missouri – 267
  12. USC – 256
  13. Utah – 253
  14. Tennessee – 227
  15. Oklahoma – 181
  16. Oklahoma State – 67

I am a voter in the weekly Super 16 poll. In the interest of full disclosure, my ballot is listed below, with a couple of quick notes.

My Week 1 Super 16 Ballot

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Texas
  4. Alabama
  5. Penn State
  6. USC – This was the big riser for me, as I suspect was the case for most.
  7. Notre Dame
  8. Miami – I’m trying not to buy all in on Miami just yet, but that was a solid season opener at Florida.
  9. Ole Miss
  10. Missouri
  11. Oklahoma
  12. Oklahoma State
  13. Arizona – this was the one to really go against the grain. Arizona only got 6 total points in this week’s voting. This was the only team that did make the Super 16. I left Tennessee just off my ballot.
  14. Michigan – I hammered Michigan and Oregon a little harder than most, apparently, after their rougher than expected season openers. I think they can each rocket back up fairly quickly with some wins.
  15. Oregon
  16. Utah

Colorado makes their first appearance in the Super 16 poll by taking the 16th and final spot in the poll following a 2-0 start with a win over Nebraska in Week 2.

Penn State ranked in top 10 in preseason FWAA Super 16 Poll

Penn State lands another top 10 preseason ranking in football writers’ Super 16 poll.

Following the releases of the preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25, Penn State has secured one more top-10 preseason ranking. The Football Writers Association of America and National Football Foundation released its preseason Super 16 Poll for the 2023 season, and Penn State was ranked at no. 7 to start the season.

Penn State’s preseason ranking in the Super 16 Poll matches the preseason rankings in the coaches and AP polls, giving Penn State a consensus no. 7 ranking to start the season. As has been the case, Georgia topped the Super 16 poll and both Michigan and Ohio State ranked higher than the Nittany Lions among Big Ten teams.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a voter in this poll and will be throughout the 2023 season. I have noted how I voted for each spot in the poll.
