Browns: 3 takeaways from Stump Mitchell’s exit interview with ABC News 5

Takeaways from former Cleveland Browns RB coach Stump Mitchell interview with ABC News 5.

Stump Mitchell, the former running backs’ coach of the Cleveland Browns, sat down for an interview with Camryn Justice of ABC News 5. He discussed Kareem Hunt, Cleveland’s future, and much more in this interview.

The segment is roughly 11 minutes long and worth a watch for any serious Browns fan.

Mitchell had perfusive praise for the organization in the interview. He bared no ill will towards the organization. The interview proved how professional he is. It’s no wonder why some of the best running backs of the century have called him “Coach.”

The departure was the sad side of the National Football League, aptly known as “Not For Long” by league employees. Teams are constantly changing and evolving. The team released a handful of offensive coaches trying to find that next edge.

Mitchell spoke candidly about the organization and its path toward winning a Super Bowl. It’s refreshing to see how optimistic he is about the team’s future. The former NFL running back may have more grace off the field than he showed on the field. The Browns were lucky to have him in the organization.

Here are the top three takeaways from Camryn Justice’s brilliant interview with Stump Mitchell.

Stump Mitchell says goodbye to Browns as team moves on

the former RB coach says goodbye.

After he was fired by the Cleveland Browns, former running backs coach Stump Mitchell stated his goodbyes to his players, the city, and the organization.

In a lengthy goodbye, Mitchell emphasized his love for every running back he coached in Cleveland and for the Browns’ organization:

“I want to express my sincere thanks to the players and running backs who donned the Browns helmet, giving their all to achieve success on Game Day. I devoted my efforts to maximize your hard work and talent, and has been a rewarding journey.”

Mitchell will land on his feet, as a well-respected running backs coach around the NFL. However, when the run game coordinator cannot get the run game going with two young backs who looked lost at times, the team had a good reason to look for a fresh perspective.

The Browns have already interviewed former running back Duce Staley for the role.

RBs coach Stump Mitchell believes Nick Chubb could have career year

Could Chubb top career highs in 2023?

Nick Chubb continues to get accolades and praise as the best pure running back in the NFL. But is he just scratching the surface of his career so far with the Cleveland Browns? While appearing on a podcast this week running backs coach Stump Mitchell said he believed that Chubb could average six yards per carry and lead the league in rushing in 2023.

Chubb’s career yards per carry average of 5.2 is already impressive enough if he could improve it even more is exciting. Coach Mitchell went on to say that he doesn’t have an issue nitpicking Chubb because he knows that he can be even more productive than he has been already.

Browns RB coach has high praise for second-year back Jerome Ford

Looking to take over for Kareem Hunt this season for the Browns, Jerome Ford is already making his mark on his coach.

The Cleveland Browns left free agency and the 2023 NFL draft with one position of need predominantly untouched: running back. As the Browns have moved on from Kareem Hunt and continue to sort out their depth chart behind the best bacll carrier in the NFL in Nick Chubb, there has been no bigger winner than second-year back Jerome Ford.

Solidifying his role as the second running back on the depth chart, the Browns have not even given Ford a contender to compete with. It is becoming apparent that Ford is their plan and not just a fallback behind Chubb. And his running back coach Stump Mitchell has high praise for the former Cincinnati Bearcat:

“Jerome’s got a skillset that allows him to do anything and everything… Pass protection, we worked a lot (on that) this spring, so that was the really the only thing we didn’t really have a good handle on because he didn’t do it a lot in college.”

Mitchell finished raving about Ford by shouting out his work ethic on the field:

“He’s worked extremely hard… We know about his skill set with the ball in his hands.”

Look out for Ford to see a significant uptick in touches as the Browns look to replace the 158 times Hunt touched the football a year ago. The second-year back is poised to make a name for himself for the Browns in 2023.

RB coach Stump Mitchell returns to Browns after missing 10 games

The trio of coaches that helped put the Browns run game near the top of the league are back together as Stump returns to the team:

The Cleveland Browns are hoping to make upgrades to their roster this offseason while trying to bring back a few players as well. TE David Njoku got the franchise tag this week while the team also placed a tender on three players making the exclusive rights free agents.

DE Jadeveon Clowney is not the team’s biggest free agent with DB M.J. Stewart and DB Ronnie Harrison falling in behind him on defense. D’Ernest Johnson could be a restricted free agent if the team tenders him, if not he will be unrestricted.

Not all of those players are expected to be back and decisions related to WR Jarvis Landry, OL J.C. Tretter, QB Case Keenum and TE Austin Hooper could free up even more cap space.

One guy who will be back is running backs coach Stump Mitchell. Mitchell left the team in October due to multiple knee issues and procedures.

The former NFL running back returned to his role with the team in February and praised the work of Ryan Cordell and Callie Brownson in taking over for him:

“I thought (Cordell and Brownson) did a remarkable job with the guys,” Mitchell said. “One good thing about this organization is that we all think we’re pretty good from top to bottom, so when anyone ever steps in as a coach or as a player, we feel like we can get the job done.”

With Kevin Stefanski’s system and the Bill Callahan coached offensive line, Mitchell’s return completes the trinity of coaches that make the Browns rushing attack one of the best in the league.

Browns sign cornerback, designate Nick Harris for return, Stump Mitchell out due to knee issue

The Browns made some moves including signing a corner, setting up the return of Harris but the biggest news may be Stump Mitchell’s indefinite absence:

The Cleveland Browns continue to make a variety of moves in advance of their Week 8 showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced the QB Baker Mayfield would return after missing a week. RB Nick Chubb and RT Jack Conklin have been cleared from any injury designation and will return while three have been ruled out for the game.

The Browns also announced that run game coordinator and running backs coach Stump Mitchell will not coach on Sunday due to a previous knee issue. The team reported that he will be out indefinitely at this time. Ryan Cordell will take over the running backs and Kevin Rogers will assist with Mitchell’s other roles.

The team also signed cornerback Herb Miller to the active roster and designated center Nick Harris for return from injured reserve. As we noted yesterday, OL Alex Taylor was waived to make room for Miller.

Miller has been called up from the Browns practice squad in each of the last two weeks and played snaps on special teams. With Denzel Ward out for Week 8 and AJ Green questionable, Miller may need to play on defense as well against the Steelers on Halloween.

The Browns now have three weeks to activate Harris from injured reserve but will have to clear a roster spot for him when they do so. He is unlikely to be activated ahead of this week’s game.

Stump Mitchell: ‘Just a matter of time’ before Nick Chubb returns to the field

Browns RB coach Stump Mitchell: ‘Just a matter of time’ before standout Nick Chubb returns to the field from his concussion

Browns running backs coach Stump Mitchell took to the Zoom channel and held a teleconference with reporters prior to Thursday’s practice session. With his prodigious beard barely contained by one of the largest masks possible, Mitchell handled several questions about the state of his position group.

Mitchell was quickly asked about the status of his star player, Nick Chubb. The third-year RB suffered a concussion in an unfortunate tackle in practice earlier this week at the hands of LB Mack Wilson, who has since been sidelined with a knee injury of his own.

“He’s in meetings,” Mitchell said of Chubb. “He’s doing, I would say, extremely well … he’s not having any problems in terms of headaches or anything like that. It’s just a matter of time before he’s (back in practice).”

It’s a positive update on Chubb’s status. Whether the team puts him back onto the practice field or saves him for the regular season remains to be seen.

Kevin Stefanski thrilled to have Stump Mitchell back

Head coach Kevin Stefanski thrilled to have Stump Mitchell back as the Browns RB coach

New Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski did not really know Stump Mitchell before taking the job. It didn’t take long for those who did know the veteran RB coach to sell Stefanski on Mitchell.

Stefanski talked about the choice of retaining Mitchell as the Browns RB coach.

“There’s plenty of people I called to talk about Stump,” Stefanski said. “They all said the same thing. Just a good person, very knowledgeable, high-character guy. He brings a level of toughness to the position. I think very highly of him. I think he’s a really good teacher. I’m really enjoying getting to know him. I think he brings a different perspective to our staff, which I’m really looking forward to.”

Mitchell did a very good job with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in 2019, guiding Chubb to second in the NFL in rushing. Hunt was one of the leading receivers out of the backfield in his eight games in Cleveland, too.

It was a strong debut for Mitchell being in charge of the Browns’ running backs. Even with the change above him on the coaching tree, Stump is a valuable piece of the puzzle.
