Chiefs have seventh-hardest remaining strength of schedule

According to the experts at Pro Football Network, the Kansas City #Chiefs have the NFL’s seventh-hardest remaining strength of schedule.

The Kansas City Chiefs have dealt with a challenging schedule all season, and with five games left to play, the defending Super Bowl champions aren’t out of the woods yet.

According to the experts at Pro Football Network, Kansas City’s remaining strength of schedule is the seventh-hardest in the NFL heading into Week 14.

The Chiefs control their own destiny in the race to win the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed but will have to face the Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Denver Broncos to earn a coveted first-round bye and home-field advantage in the postseason.

When the 2024 schedule came out, it seemed that Kansas City’s most difficult task would be its first five games before the Chiefs’ bye in Week 6.

After opening the season with matchups against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, in Weeks 1 and 2 Kansas City’s biggest second-half test was a Week 11 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, which resulted in the Chiefs’ only loss.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones isn’t a fan of playing weekday games: ‘I rather just play on Sunday’

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones isn’t a fan of playing weekday games: ‘I rather just play on Sunday’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Las Vegas Raiders in the second-ever NFL game on Black Friday. The monumental showcase at Arrowhead Stadium is exciting for audiences worldwide but can be taxing on the players involved from both teams.

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has never been shy about sharing his thoughts on any matter throughout his career. During Tuesday’s press conference, he gave his thoughts on playing another game on a short week with reporters.

” I rather just play on Sunday, not these Thursday and Friday games. It’s not enough rest time, but i get it. We was allocated for the spot, only teams playing,” said Jones. “Personally for me, I love my rest. I have a recovery routine. Throughout the week, my body kind of gets used to it. So, to kind of speed it up, everything that’s challenging at points.”

Jones hasn’t racked up the sack numbers this season due to constant double-teams but has opened up opportunities for teammates. He won’t like playing on Friday but will still perform like it was a typical Sunday anyway.

Texas A&M’s strength of schedule compared to 14 College Football Playoff contenders

With the 2024 regular season coming to a close, here is where Texas A&M’s strength of schedule ranks among the Top 15 CFP contenders

No. 15 Texas A&M (8-2, 5-1 SEC) is completely focused on facing the Auburn Tigers (4-6, 1-5 SEC) on Saturday night inside a likely packed Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Aggies are in must-win mode before hosting No. 3 Texas next weekend.

On Tuesday, the newest College Football Playoff rankings revealed the Aggies as the No. 15 team. This isn’t a surprise after Saturday’s win over New Mexico State didn’t move the needle for the selection committee.

Still, it’s easy to question several teams in the top 10, including Alabama, who is also 8-2 with losses to unranked Vanderbilt and Tennessee.

However, one measurement that is likely to be taken into account during the final rankings after Week 14 is the strength of schedule, which SEC Commissioner and selection committee member Greg Sankey recently pointed out on X with a list of the top 15 teams with the highest ranked SOS, including third-ranked Texas A&M.

Here is where the Aggies rank among ESPN, Massey, and Sagarian:

  • ESPN: 24th
  • Massey: 23rd
  • Sagarian: 34th

Following the latest CFP rankings, Texas A&M is ranked below No. 11 Tennessee, No. 7 Alabama, and No. 10 Georgia, as the Bulldogs have the toughest schedule in the country.

Within the top 15, six teams are out of the SEC, while only the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, ranked sixth toughest SOS, are ranked within the top 5 of the CFB rankings.

Texas A&M will face Auburn on the road on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 6:30 pm. CT. The game will air on ESPN.

Broncos opponents have gone 8-1 this season

The Broncos are 1-2, but their first three opponents are a combined 8-1 this season. Now, can Denver upset the Jets?

The Denver Broncos have started the 2024 NFL season with a 1-2 record, but the three teams they’ve faced are a combined 8-1. That prompted Nate Davis to opine in his weekly power rankings: “Maybe they’re due a little more respect.”

In their season opener, the Broncos lost to the Seattle Seahawks (3-0) by six points (26-20) on the road. Through three weeks, Seattle’s defense is ranked fourth in points allowed (14.3 per game) and second in yards allowed (248.7 YPG).

In Week 2, Denver lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0) by seven points (13-6) at home. Pittsburgh’s defense ranks first in points allowed (8.7 PPG) and first in yards allowed (229.7 YPG).

On Sunday, the Broncos handed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) their first loss of the season with a convincing 19-point victory (26-7). Tampa Bay’s defense was not nearly as formidable as the squads Denver faced in the first two weeks of the season. The Bucs rank 16th in points allowed (20.7 PPG) and 26th in yards allowed (371.3 YPG).

It remains to be seen if Tampa Bay will be a playoff contender in the NFC this season, but the Seahawks and Steelers appear to be legit, especially on defense. So, where does that leave the Broncos?

On deck this week is a road game against the New York Jets (2-1), who rank eighth in points allowed (17.3 PPG) and seventh in yards allowed (280 YPG). If Denver’s offense manages to move the ball and score points in New Jersey like it did in Florida, Broncos Country will have hope that 2024 won’t be a lost season.

Saints still have one of the NFL’s easiest schedules after 2-0 start

Their 2-0 start has raised expectations, but the Saints still have one of the easiest remaining schedules on this year’s docket:

https://twitter.com/NerdingonNFL/status/1836074962433802643

The New Orleans Saints’ 2-0 start came off the back of playing one presumed good team, the Dallas Cowboys, and one presumed bad team, the Carolina Panthers. Things somewhat evened out for them in that regard, and yet for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season, they look to have one of the easier paths forward in the league.

The NFL Nerd account on Twitter researched the remaining strength of schedule for teams according to the new ESPN power rankings that came out Tuesday morning. This research found that the Saints have the fifth-easiest remaining strength of schedule according to those rankings, behind only the Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Commanders. Of those five teams, only the Saints are unbeaten.

The ESPN power rankings were also pretty high on many of the Saints opponents, including the Kansas City Chiefs (ranked No. 1), Philadelphia Eagles (ranked No. 6) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (ranked No. 7), and Los Angeles Chargers (ranked No. 9). However, they are also pretty low on many of the remaining opponents as well, such as the Carolina Panthers (ranked No. 32), New York Giants (ranked No. 31), Denver Broncos (ranked No. 30), Washington Commanders (ranked No. 27), and even the Atlanta Falcons who the Saints play twice came in at No. 23.

The lower rankings seem to have heavily offset the higher ones, and if the Saints are able to take advantage of these easier stretches down the line, they may be able to become a pretty big threat in the NFC.

2024 Schedule Swings: Running Backs

Which RB gets an easier schedule for 2024? Who experiences the worst drop in schedule strength?

The schedule strength for running backs is always the more accurate among fantasy positions, thanks to their volume of work and the tendency of teams to feature the run and rely more consistently on individual players. That makes this analysis the most reliable.

The average fantasy points allowed by defenses to running backs last year were applied to each offense’s schedule to determine their true schedule strength of last year, and applied the same values to their 2023 schedule. This includes considering both home and away venues separately for each defense.

The resulting fantasy point advantages are compared between years and the difference is their “swing points.”  The higher the Swing Points, the better their schedule is compared to last year. This analysis is more telling than standard schedule strength. You know what happened last year with players – do they get an easier or tougher schedule for 2024?

Best schedule swings

Kenneth Walker/Zach Charbonnet (SEA) – After two seasons as the No. 20 fantasy running back, Walker gets a chance to take advantage of the most dramatic swing for the position. His schedule strength rockets up from No. 30 to No. 2 and that should be apparent so long as Charbonnet doesn’t take a hefty chunk away from him.

Aaron Jones (MIN) – The offensive line won’t be an advantage unlike back in Green Bay, but Jones’ first season with the Vikings with a boost from the No. 29 up to the No. 9 schedule. He wasn’t there last year, but he suffered through the worst schedule in 2023 while with the Packers. The schedule should help get him back on track.

Breece Hall (NYJ) – Hall already exploded last year when the Jets kicked off the training wheels and let Hall become the workhorse back. He’ll enjoy a lighter schedule this time around and maybe even a passing offense that can take the pressure of him.

Javonte Williams (DEN) – After a tough 2023 when he was still recovering from his torn ACL, Williams has a nice upgrade to his schedule but he seems to have lost a bit from his injury and the Broncos added Audric Estime. This isn’t as safe of an advantage as it might seem.

Rachaad White (TB) – With the Buccaneers getting a rougher passing schedule, White may already be in line for more receptions from the backfield. But he also gets a solid upgrade in rushing schedule that should keep him on the field and productive. Bucky Irving was drafted to help out, but an easier schedule should keep White looking better and keep Irving from making inroads for a bigger share.

About the same schedule strength

The only notable teams are the Bengals and Colts who repeat what were already tough schedules from 2023.

Worst schedule swings

Christian McCaffrey (SF) – Okay, so the best running back from 2023 has the worst swing in schedule strength. Is that enough to sway you from taking him with the 1.01 pick? Probably not. McCaffrey’s problem is more about staying healthy but he’s always a monster when he plays because he just switches to being a receiver if the rushing lanes are clogged. Still, will be interesting to track.

Bijan Robinson (ATL) – Not Bijan too! The Falcons’ stud running back is hoping to become “all that he can be” now that Arthur Smith is gone and new OC Zac Robinson wants to use him extensively in any way they can get the ball into his hands. But the dip from No. 7 down to the No. 29 is concerning for any back. On the plus, Robinson’s volume should be much higher for 2024, and he was already the No. 8 fantasy running back last year with partial use.

Ezekiel Elliott (DAL) – While Christian McCaffrey and Bijan Robinson should be better than their schedules, the same may not be true for the aging Elliott, who has slowed down and is now back in Dallas for the second time for a team with a lesser O-line and now the worst schedule for running backs. Elliott is no lock to remain the RB1 in Dallas all season and has fallen deep in drafts. This won’t make him any more appealing.

Travis Etienne (JAC) – The schedule strength has taken a downturn from 2023, but like McCaffrey and Robinson, Etienne is a dual-threat back and the center of their backfield that contains no real competition.

James Cook (BUF) – This is a bit concerning for a lesser talented back than the above players. Cook ended as the No. 11 fantasy back last year as a surprise, but he was facing the No. 2 best fantasy schedule for the position. He drops below average for 2024, and the Bills offense will be different with their best wideouts gone. That may help Cook see more receptions, but he’s probably not “better than his schedule.”

NFC South has the lowest divisional strength of schedule

The Saints have the easiest schedule in the NFL, and the NFC South has the easiest schedule as a division. One of these teams must climb up from the bottom:

The NFL schedule released Wednesday evening and revealed when the New Orleans Saints will play their opponents. The Saints have the easiest schedule in the NFL, but they aren’t alone. Solely based off the opponent’s record last year, New Orleans and the Atlanta Falcons have the easiest schedule in the NFL. The NFC South as a whole has the easiest schedule in the league

But the Saints found themselves in this position last year and still weren’t successful. Strength of schedule will never outweigh strength of team. The Saints will have to improve to take advantage of this opportunity. Also, in a way the entire division having an easy schedule devalues the advantage in the race for the divisional crown.

Strength of schedule is greatly influenced by your divisional opponents. That’s emphasized by Tampa Bay having the highest in the division but fifth-lowest in the league. That’s even with playing the other divisional leaders in the NFC.

Playing Carolina twice a year brings down your rating significantly. They had the worst record in the league, but it’s hard to place too much onus on them when no team hit double-digit wins in 2023. Here’s how each NFC South team ranks:

  • New Orleans Saints / Atlanta Falcons: .453 (32nd)
  • Carolina Panthers: .467 (29th)
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers: .478 (27th)

Saints tied for the easiest strength of schedule again in 2024

Dennis Allen and Derek Carr couldn’t take advantage of the NFL’s easiest schedule last year, but they’re getting another shot in 2024:

Dennis Allen and Derek Carr couldn’t take advantage of the NFL’s easiest schedule last year, but they’re getting another shot in 2024. The New Orleans Saints are tied with the Atlanta Falcons for the easiest strength of schedule this season (.453), which is the same position they found themselves in a year ago.

And as we saw, it didn’t matter. Allen’s defense was beaten by backup quarterbacks like Joshua Dobbs and Desmond Ridder. Carr wilted in prime time matchups with the few playoff teams on their schedule, coming up short against the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, and Los Angeles Rams.

Here’s where the Saints ranked in strength of schedule each year after Drew Brees retired, and where their final record landed:

  • 2021: 22nd (9-8)
  • 2022: 14th (7-10)
  • 2023: 1st (9-8)
  • 2024: 1st (to be determined)

But teams change from year to year. Games that look like cake walks can turn out to be challenging. Squads that look like Super Bowl contenders on paper may end up just being paper tigers. That’s true of the Saints, too. Right now they aren’t regarded too highly. It’s on Allen and Carr to turn things around, rebuild their reputation at the national level, and regain the confidence they’ve lost with the fanbase. Or else teams will be looking at them as easy wins in 2024, too.

Colts with 7th-easiest projected strength of schedule in 2024 per one metric

The Colts are projected to have the seventh easiest strength of schedule in 2024, according to Sharp Football.

Sharp Football Analysis released its strength-of-schedule rankings for the 2024 NFL season, and the Indianapolis Colts have the seventh-easiest schedule by these projections.

Here are the 10 teams with the easiest schedules according to Sharp:

1. Atlanta Falcons

2. Los Angeles Chargers

3. Chicago Bears

4. New York Jets

5. New Orleans Saints

6. Cincinnati Bengals

7. Indianapolis Colts

8. Miami Dolphins

9. Philadelphia Eagles

10. Carolina Panthers

To calculate these rankings, Sharp used the projected win totals that were determined by the oddsmakers for each of the teams’ opponents.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The Colts not only have the easiest strength of schedule within the AFC South, but the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans have two of the more difficult schedules by this metric, ranking 26th and 27th, respectively. Jacksonville, meanwhile, is ranked 14th.

The Colts nondivisional opponents are: Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Minnesota, New England, the New York Jets, Denver and the New York Giants.

Of those teams, Buffalo, Detroit, Miami, Green Bay and Pittsburgh made the playoffs last season. The Colts will play each of those teams, except for Green Bay, at home.

As of now, we know who the Colts will play, but we won’t know the exact schedule until May.

Once that is released, other contributing factors that can make a schedule either more or less daunting include how many air miles have to be traveled, when the bye week is, how long the longest road trip is and when it takes place. On top of that, other factors include: Is there a stretch of games against top-tier opponents, and will the Colts play more home or road games in that final month of the season?

After finishing 9-8 last season and just missing out on the playoffs, the Colts have their sights set on making it back to the playoffs with Anthony Richardson back under center.
