Seahawks legends Steve Largent and Tyler Lockett share a birthday

Seahawks legends Steve Largent and Tyler Lockett share a birthday

September 28th is a day Seattle Seahawks fans are going to have to start circling on their calendar. Earlier on Saturday we reported how the 28th was wide receiver Tyler Lockett’s birthday, and how he is the second best wide receiver in Seahawks history. The first of course is Steve Largent, who also happens to celebrate his birthday on September 28th!

Perhaps it is fate these two are forever connected, even as much as sharing the date of their birth, and birthplace of Tulsa, OK.

Fans in the Pacific Northwest will always recognize the greatness of Steve Largent, but it always helps to remind folks just how elite he was. Not only was Largent the undisputed face of the franchise for the Seahawks in their early years, he was inarguably the best wide receiver in the NFL during his prime. When Largent finally called it a career, he was No. 1 in NFL history when it came to receptions, yards and receiving touchdowns.

In fact, Steve Largent was the first wide receiver to catch 100 touchdown receptions.

As for Tyler Lockett, who trails only Largent in the all-time Seahawks receiving leaderboards, has won an award named in his honor, twice. Every year, the Seahawks give out the Steve Largent Award, which is given to the Seahawks player or coach who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks. Lockett took home these honors in 2021 and 2022.

When walking around Seattle on game day, seeing Largent’s No. 80 jersey is a common sight and has been for decades. But these days, Lockett’s No. 16 is one of the more frequent jerseys I see each week the Seahawks play at Lumen. I have a feeling we will continue to see No. 16 long after Lockett is done playing, the same way we’ll always see No. 80 around.

Happy birthday to Seahawks WR Tyler Locket!

Happy birthday to Seahawks WR Tyler Locket!

Happy birthday to one of the best Seattle Seahawks of all time! On Saturday, wide receiver Tyler Lockett turned 32 years old. It’s wild to think we’re talking about Lockett as an old veteran these days. It seems only yesterday he was a third round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. Since then, he has established himself as one of the best wide receivers in Seahawks franchise history.

It is not an exaggeration to suggest Lockett is No. 2 all time at the position, behind only the legendary Steve Largent. All-time, Lockett is No. 2 in receptions (625), yards (8,132) and touchdowns (59). While he may not quite reach the lofty marks set by Largent (819 receptions, 13,089 yards and 100 touchdowns) he is going to remain near the top of the leaderboards for quite some time.

Lockett has been a reliable weapon for years, and one of the most underrated players in football. From 2019-2022 Lockett eclipsed 1,000+ yards receiving, and was close in both 2018 (965) and 2023 (894). So far this year, Lockett has 13 receptions for 138 yards… and caught the game-sealing reception on third down to ice the victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 1.

Now, Lockett and the Seahawks will play the Detroit Lions in Week 4 on Monday Night Football. The last time Lockett was in Detroit, he caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Geno Smith.

Wherever Lockett is today or whatever it is he has planned, we at Seahawks Wire hope he is celebrating in style with friends and family.

Seahawks Mt. Rushmore of players, according to FS1’s Colin Cowherd

Seahawks Mt. Rushmore of players, according to FS1’s Colin Cowherd

One of the more prominent Pacific Northwest sports figures in the national media is Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd. Born and raised in coastal Washington State, Cowherd grew up in the shadow of the blossoming Seattle sports scene of the late 1970’s.

Cowherd may have shifted to being more of a national commentator, opining on all teams in each of the professional leagues, but it is clear he still holds some reverance towards Seattle’s teams… such as the Seahawks.

Recently, Cowherd sat down with former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman on his podcast. Edelman asked Cowherd to give his personal “Mt. Rushmore” of Seahawks players. Of course, wide receiver Steve Largent was the first pick. No shocker there. But the other three names might surprise you a bit.

First off, you know Cowherd was truly an original Seahawks fan if he’s even making the argument for potentially adding Jim Zorn to the list. As someone who was raised by parents who watched the Seahawks from their inception, I can attest this is only something a diehard 12th Man from that era would say.

Secondly, I firmly believe one of the most underrated Seahawks of all time is absolutely Shaun Alexander. To this date, he is the only Seahawk to win league MVP, and I have been beating the drum that he is well overdue for an enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.

What say you, dear reader? Does Cowherd get it right with his Mt. Rushmore? Who should he have added? Who would you add if you were asked the same question?

Tyler Lockett contract details for his new deal with Seahawks

Last week just before free agency began Tyler Lockett agreed to a restructured contract.

Last week just before free agency began Tyler Lockett agreed to a restructured contract. Now we finally have contract details for Lockett’s new deal with the Seahawks.

According to Spotrac it’s a two-year, $29.66 million deal. That amounts to a big pay cut for Lockett, which saved the team $8.34 million in salary cap space in 2024. Lockett gets $12.66 million guaranteed, all this year.

A key date to watch for Lockett is exactly one year from today. On March 18, 2025 Lockett’s $5.3 million roster bonus hits the books. Painful as it is to contemplate, chances are that he will be cut for cap savings before that happens – no matter how he performs in 2024.

Speaking of next season, we should probably expect Lockett’s role to shrink a bit in Year 1 of Ryan Grubb’s offense compare to Shane Waldron’s. Jaxon Smith-Njigba should be projected to get more targets, bumping Lockett down to the WR3 spot on the depth chart.

Seahawks fans need to savor what is likely their last season watching Lockett, who will finish as the second-greatest wide receiver in franchise history behind Steve Largent.

10-point blueprint for the Seattle Seahawks in the 2024 offseason

Steve Largent turns 69, Tyler Lockett 31 years old today

It’s only fitting the two best receivers in franchise history share a birthday!

Today is a double birthday for a pair of Seattle Seahawks legends. Both Steve Largent and Tyler Lockett are celebrating the same day they came into this world – only 38 years apart. Largent has turned 69, while Lockett became 31.

It is weirdly fitting the two best receivers in Seahawks franchise history share a birthday. As Lockett continues to cement his legacy as one of the best to ever catch a pass for Seattle, he inches closer to the true G.O.A.T. of Seahawks football. Of course, he has a ways to go to catching Largent.

Although he has been since surpassed, we must never forget at the time Steve Largent walked away from the game he held the NFL’s all time records for receiving yards, receptions, and receiving touchdowns. He was the first receiver to catch 100 touchdown passes. At the time of his retirement, he was indisputably the greatest receiver to play the game up to that point.

Lockett may not eclipse the 100 touchdown mark, but he’s the only other receiver in Seahawks history to have at least 50 or more touchdowns. He also needs only 418 yards to pass Brian Blades to be second all time in receiving yards for Seattle. We may not be able to watch Largent play anymore, but we’re pretty privileged to witness the greatness of Lockett in real time.

We at Seahawks Wire want to wish both Steve Largent and Tyler Lockett a very happy birthday, surrounded by friends and family.

Seahawks Mt. Rushmore: Wide Receivers

Is there any question as to who No. 1 is?

Here at Seahawks Wire, we are continuing our latest on-going summer series: Seahawks Mt. Rushmore, where we will look at the top four players at each major position in franchise history.

We started with quarterbacks, then of course moved to running backs. Now we’re on to the position group of the most iconic player in franchise history: wide receiver.

Although Seattle boasts one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL today, the Seahawks haven’t been known as a powerhouse of pass catchers. But the ones who have stood out have certainly left a mark in team history…

FanDuel asks if Russell Wilson is greatest Seahawks player ever, fans answer

FanDuel asked if Wilson is the greatest in franchise history and Seahawks fans stormed the replies in force.

If the Seahawks were to have a Mount Rushmore of their greatest players of all time, fans would universally agree on at least two members. That would be wide receiver Steve Largent and left tackle Walter Jones, who are both in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After those two, the consensus completely falls apart for the other franchise GOAT spots, though.

Seattle only has one former league MVP, running back Shaun Alexander. However, he’s not even the most popular Seahawks running back of all time. That would be Marshawn Lynch, who was the beating heart of the team when it was at its absolute best from 2012-2015.

Some great defenders have also come through over the years, including a few Defensive Player of the Year winners in Kenny Easley and Cortez Kennedy. There’s also several potential future Hall of Famers that played for the Legion of Boom, including Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Bobby Wagner.

The Seahawks have also had a couple of very good/great quarterbacks in Matt Hasselbeck and Russell Wilson, both deserving of recognition but not in the same league as Largent or Jones.

Over the weekend, FanDuel asked if Wilson is the greatest in franchise history and Seahawks fans stormed the replies in force. Judging by the replies, Wilson is never going to go down as the greatest in Seattle history.

Here’s what they’re saying.

Tyler Lockett is becoming an all-time Seattle Seahawk

One area the 12’s can still hang their hat on with pride is with wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

There was little reason to be happy about the Seattle Seahawks’ pitiful loss to the Carolina Panthers. It was their third defeat in the last four games, and the second time in the last three the team has surrendered over 200 yards rushing.

The Seahawks are in a tough spot right now, once again on the outside of the playoff picture looking in, with a challenging matchup against the 49ers looming large. But one area the 12’s can still hang their hat on with pride is with wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

On Sunday, Lockett set a franchise record by catching a touchdown reception in six consecutive games. Of course, what would a record setting touchdown be if it wasn’t dramatic, instant highlight reel material?

Lockett already moved his way up the Seahawks franchise leaderboards earlier this season, as he surpassed Doug Baldwin for second most touchdowns in team history. Lockett has 53 career touchdown receptions, and while he has a long ways to catch the illustrious Steve Largent and his 100 touchdowns, it’s going to be quite a while before any other Seahawk surpasses Lockett.

When asked what this record means for Lockett, he expressed nothing but humility.

When Lockett’s retirement day does eventually come, as he referenced, there’s little doubt he will be remembered as one of the great Seahawks. Perhaps even one of the best Seattle sports stars of all time as well.
