New Titans DBs coach Steve Jackson: 3 things to know

A look at three things to know about new Titans DBs coach Steve Jackson.

The Tennessee Titans reportedly made an addition to their defensive staff on Friday with the hiring of former Atlanta Falcons defensive backs coach, Steve Jackson.

Jackson comes over from the Falcons after two seasons. He first served as a senior offensive assistant before being moved to defensive backs coach in 2023. In all, Jackson has over two decades of NFL coaching experience.

The name might sound familiar to you because Jackson has already had multiple stints with the Oilers/Titans, dating back to 1991.

We’ll go over that and more as we take a look at three things to know about the Titans’ new defensive backs coach.

Jets hire Air Force coach with ties to Gregg Williams

Chip Vaughn, who coached Air Force’s defensive backs for the past two seasons, will join the Jets as a defensive assistant.

The Jets went to the college ranks to add an assistant for Gregg Williams’ defensive staff.

Chip Vaughn, previously an Air Force defensive backs coach, joined the Jets as a defensive assistant and assistant defensive backs coach, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette. Vaughn coached the Falcons’ defensive backs the previous two seasons.

This offseason, the Jets lost assistant defensive backs coach Steve Jackson, who became the new Cincinnati Bengals cornerbacks coach. Just two weeks ago, the Jets added Leigh Torrence as their assistant defensive backs coach. On Tuesday, the team added Vaughn, in addition to Torrence, to help assist Dennard Wilson, the team’s passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach.

Torrence played cornerback during his football career, while Vaughn played safety. It’s likely the two will help assist those two positions, respectively.

After playing college football at Wake Forrest University, Vaughn was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round in 2009. There, he played under Williams.

Vaughn was waived after spending the entire season on injured reserve, but he did earn a Super Bowl ring with New Orleans. Vaughn would go on to play two more seasons in the NFL, with stints in Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Carolina. From there, Vaughn played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.

In 2015, Vaughn began his coaching career, overseeing safeties and assisting with special teams at Winston-Salem State University through the NFLPA Coaching Internship program. He was promoted to an assistant coach after the internship ended.

The following season, Vaughn joined Fayetteville State University football, where he was hired as defensive backs coach, defensive passing game coordinator and videotape exchange coordinator.

Now he’s in the Big Apple, reunited with Williams.

Jets assistant Steve Jackson takes job with Bengals

Jets assistant defensive backs coach Steve Jackson was hired by the Bengals as their cornerbacks coach.

Adam Gase will have to make a new addition to his coaching staff for the 2020 season.

According to the New York Post’s Brian Costello, Jets assistant DBs coach Steve Jackson was hired by the Cincinnati Bengals to be their cornerbacks coach.

Jackson spent the last two seasons with the Jets as their assistant DBs coach. Gase decided to retain Jackson from Todd Bowles’ staff after he was fired after the 2018 season.

Jackson has also worked for the Titans, Lions, Redskins and Bills. He played in the NFL for nine years as a defensive back for the Oilers and Titans.

Bengals announce minor additions to coaching staff

Zac Taylor added to his staff recently.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made the hiring of Al Golden as linebackers coach official and also brought on a new coach in the secondary.

Zac Taylor and the team announced the moves Monday, highlighted by the arrival of former New York Jets safeties coach Steve Jackson to work in the secondary.

We got an expert’s look at what the Al Golden hire means for Bengals linebackers.

Jackson, however, is a new announcement. Now 50, he had spent nine seasons in the NFL and appeared in a Super Bowl before calling it quits. He’s coached for five different teams since the early 2000s and now moves to Cincinnati so he can replace Daronte Jones.

While these aren’t major moves, this was about as extensive as it was going to get for Zac Taylor’s staff after just one season. The idea was to get these moves down now and have a staff assembled for the Senior Bowl.
