The Lions are adding TE Zach Ertz this week

The 33-year-old Ertz

Faced with the prospect of having only two healthy tight ends on the entire roster, the Detroit Lions are adding free agent Zach Ertz this week. Ertz will begin on Detroit’s practice squad, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

Ertz, 33, was waived from the Cardinals injured reserve at his request back in November. He suffered a quad injury in October and has not practiced or played since.

Ertz has a strong connection to the Lions. Current Lions TE coach Steve Heiden was his position coach with the Cardinals for nearly two seasons.

Brock Wright broke his forearm in Detroit’s 31-23 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Steve Heiden is one of the new faces on the Detroit Lions coaching staff. Heiden is the team’s new tight ends coach, coming over to join Detroit after several seasons in that capacity with the Arizona Cardinals.

He’s charged with developing another new face in Detroit, second-round rookie Sam LaPorta. Heiden played tight end in the NFL for a decade, just as head coach Dna Campbell also did. So far, Heiden likes what he’s seen from LaPorta through OTAs and minicamp.

“I think the biggest thing is to just try and put him in as many positions as possible,” Heiden said Monday of the rookie from Iowa. “That includes in the classroom, showing on film what can go on. But … it’s really about getting out here, getting on the field. Feeling the speed of the game, you know, learning on the field, on the grass. That’s the best way to go about it.”

Or, as Heiden summarized,

“Throw him out there, feet to the fire and let’s go.”

The Lions have done just that. In the sessions open to the media, LaPorta has taken a lot of reps from both the inline and slot TE positions. He even took a few snaps as the X-receiver in some 2-TE sets and could have been easily mistaken for a big wideout. Without pads, blocking has not been ready to evaluate, but LaPorta’s receiving skills look impressive.

Heiden added that he’s been “pleasantly surprised” with the instinctive nature LaPorta has shown thus far.

TE coach Steve Heiden wants to ‘be more physical’ to win games

New Lions TE coach Steve Heiden believes winning is about “being more physical than the opponent.”

Steve Heiden had a parallel NFL career with Dan Campbell. Both were tight ends, each selected in the third round of the 1999 NFL draft. Heiden and Campbell were each listed at 6-foot-5, with Campbell five pounds heavier at a listed 270.

They were never teammates, but they definitely had respect for one another as contemporaries. That has carried over into the coaching careers of both men.

Earlier this offseason, Campbell hired Heiden to become the TE coach for the Lions. It was a chance Heiden was thrilled to get. The new assistant spoke to the media on Wednesday about how happy he was to serve under Campbell in Detroit.

“The opportunity for Dan (Campbell) to call me after the season, I jumped at the opportunity,” said Heiden. “I thought this place was a fit for me. To be honest, in my mind, a destination for me. I wanted to be here; this is a place I want to be. I felt like I knew what Dan was all about and that was really kind of the direction I wanted to go with my career. This is the place I wanted to be.”

As for Heiden’s coaching style with the tight ends? He sure sounds like Campbell,

“(playing TE) is still about physicality first, and you go into the game with that mindset. That’s the approach … I still think you can win a bunch of games in this league by being more physical than the opponent.”

The Lions currently have Brock Wright, James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra on the roster at tight end. Heiden is looking for each to keep contributing “in their own ways”, something he thought the group did well in 2022.

Lions hire a former Browns tight end as their new tight ends coach

The Lions have hired a former Browns tight end.

The Detroit Lions have hired a new tight ends coach, and it turns out to be a former tight end of the Cleveland Browns. As the Arizona Cardinals continue through their new head coach search, Steve Heiden has jumped ship to join the Lions as their tight ends coach. He has been with the Cardinals since 2013 in various roles and has been the tight ends coach since 2019.

As a member of the Cleveland Browns, the former third round pick racked up 1,600 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns in eight seasons with the team. With uncertainty in Arizona, Heiden how joins the staff of a former tight end himself in Dan Campbell in Detroit.

Cardinals TE coach Steve Heiden leaving to join Dan Campbell’s staff on Lions

After 10 seasons as an assistant with the Cardinals, Steve Heiden will leave to coach tight ends for the Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals are losing another one of their position coaches. The latest is tight ends coach Steve Heiden.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Heiden is leaving to coach tight ends for the Detroit Lions under head coach Dan Campbell.

Heiden survived three different head coaches for the Cardinals.

He joined the staff in 2013 under Bruce Arians. He was a special teams assistant and an assistant tight ends coach. In 2018, under head coach Steve Wilks, he was the assistant offensive line coach to Ray Brown.

In 2019, with Kliff Kingsbury, he was promoted to tight ends coach, which is has been for four seasons.

Last November, after offensive line coach Sean Kugler was fired, Heiden stepped into the role of offensive line coach.

With Kingsbury being fired, it seemed inevitable that there would be major changes on the offensive staff. It is goo to see Heiden land somewhere already.

Heiden held the same role for the Arizona Cardinals for the last four seasons. The 45-year-old Heiden has been with the Cardinals coaching staff since 2013. Like head coach Dan Campbell, Heiden is a former NFL tight end best known for his eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

Heiden takes the role of TE coach from Tanner Engstrand, who was also the passing game coordinator in 2022 and remains in that capacity.
